Fandom: SHERLOCK BBC Pairing: Sherlock/John Length: 1120 words Author: Jenwryn on AO3, LJ, and DW Author Website: works on AO3 Why this must be read: In addition to the sweeping melodramas, the case-fic, and the minutely detailed rolling Romances, there are many fine vignettes that illuminate the sometimes puzzling relationship between the consulting detective and his doctor-flatmate-blogger-partner-friend. This is a lovely miniature, a small moment of realization and change. Sherlock and John are on a beach in Australia. "Sherlock watches the starfish. John watches Sherlock."

Fandom: MERLIN Pairing: Merlin/Arthur Length: 11,000 words Author on LJ: furloughdayAuthor Website: Master Fic PostWhy this must be read: It's a modern AU where Merlin has Arthur as tech support. Merlin and Arthur's relationship is always suited to be explored in an office environment with the ever-present hierarchy and disrespect. This one has a nice twist with Arthur (apparently) providing a service to Merlin. Delightfully done! Screen Control Your Motherboard

Fandom: THOR (Marvel movieverse) Pairing: Loki/Thor Length: 6,289 words Author on LJ: astolatAuthor Website: astolat on AO3Why this must be read:Loki is the Lie-Smith for a reason, and what he forges is exquisitely crafted. This story goes AU from the moment that Loki finds out about his true heritage in the movie and does it in a way that leaves the reader breathless with all that is unsaid. This is a deliciously twisted story written by a master writer that I HIGHLY recommend. ( Have a taste of the story... )Balancing by astolat

Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH Pairing: none Length: 540 words Author on LJ: tinx_rAuthor Website: HEREWhy this must be read: There are not many stories referring to the Apocalypse in this fandom and this one was written for me by someone who knows the guys very well, even though it’s not her main fandom. Starsky, Hutch, an out-of-gas, out-of-time converted bus, and a fucking dandelion. Not to mention the cockroach that lives somewhere in the dash, comes out time to time, feelers waving. Starsky's christened her Christine, and Hutch tries to flick her out the window every time he sees her. Apocalypse Now

I'm MF Luder and I'll be in charge of the monster-hunting road trip this month. I mainly read Dean/Cas, but I love a little bit of everything so expect some rare pairs and Wincest, too. Fandom: Supernatural Pairing: Ben Winchester/Claire Novak Length: 2,600 Author on LJ: nutkin Author Website: Master Fic ListI love fics that take the world of Supernatural and expand it, either to the network of hunters, or generationally. Claire and Ben are perfect candidates to become the next generation of hunters. The author manages to get across how much they've seen since they came to know Dean (and Cas), how Ben is a bit of a romantic like his dad, and just how broken Claire is even as she's become stronger, become a woman. The displacement is deliciously wrong, the sex incredibly hot. ( Mini-Teaser )The Roles Destiny Has Chosen

Fandom: NCIS Pairing: Gibbs/DiNozzo Length: 1,860 words Author on LJ: the_7th_swanAuthor Website: N/A Why this must be read: From the author's summary: "In which Tony is confident, competent and not the least bit handicapped despite his disability. A story about determination, preservation and an unconquerable spirit." That about sums it up. LOL! "Invictus" is a disability fic, but it doesn't focus on the whump or the angst or even the hurt/comfort. The story is all about Tony and how he doesn't let a simple thing like a physical disability stop him from being who and what he wants to be. I especially love Gibbs in this fic, how Tony's disability is a non-issue for him both personally and professionally. Added bonus: The sex scene at the end is both hot and funny. Fandom: THE WEST WING Pairing: Josh/Donna Length: 28,497 words Author on LJ: n/a Author Website: her ff.net profile; her stories at N-LWhy this must be read: Who doesn't love stories about clever people being clever? Here, Josh, who (so we are told) is a kickass strategist, does what he didn't do in canon but we've all wished he had: he concocts a plan to get Donna to join his candidate's team instead of Russel's. And Donna, with her personal brand of shrewd resourcefulness and all that trivia knowledge, is too smart not to realise Bob Russel isn't worth working for... This is the fic that made me ship Josh/Donna when canon didn't quite manage. Two Weeks (or here)

Fandom: DUE SOUTH Pairing: Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski Length: 38,000 words Author on LJ: nos4a2no9Author Website: Nos's master fic listWhy this must be read:Swimming with Sharks is one of those fics that makes you have ALL THE FEELINGS. It's angst and smut and humor and hurt/comfort and more smut all rolled up together. Nos takes the two of our fandom's oft-used, slightly cracky tropes (undercover at a gay bar and fuck-buddies) and turns them on their ear. The tropes set the stage, but the next thirty thousand words are a lovely character-driven exploration of Fraser and Ray K's complicated, evolving relationship. (Okay, fine, some of those thirty thousand words are smut-driven, but it's the really good kind of smut that serves the story.) Excerpt under the cut: ( snip... )Swimming with Sharks

Fandom: AMERICAN IDOL SEASON 7 Pairing: David Cook/David Archuleta Length: 6,200 words Author on LJ: offthebalconyAuthor Website: fic master listWhy this must be read: The summary: David Cook was 26 years old when he signed up to fight for his country. I am not a huge fan of very alternative au stories but there's always an exception to the rule and this is mine. Hand to god, I sobbed through every word of this WW II AU that is one of the most exceptional stories I've had the pleasure to read in any fandom. I recommend this to everyone without reservation because the writing is evocative perfection. but only if you run
