Fandom: GENERATION KILL Pairing: Brad Colbert/Ray Person Length: 37145 Author on LJ: saline_joyAuthor Website: saline_joy, AO3Why this must be read:This one's a mutant AU - and in typical fashion for mutant stories there's a lot of questions about humanity, government, safety, and genocide. This was done for the warbigbang, and is one of my favourite Ray/Brad fics. In this universe, those with powers are taken away and locked up - nominally for everyone else's safety. Ray has a power - but he's careful to hide it from everyone. This fic is heartbreaking and desperate in a way that really captures those living on the edge. The characterisation is absolutely fantastic; all the guys ring true to the ones we know, despite their situation, and the sense of brotherhood and 'being in the shit together' is strong. The plot is excellently done, with little unexpected moments and an amazing finish that will leave you both tearful and hopeful. There's also a little coda fic in this universe; take your time coming home. It too is beautifully done, but focusses on Nate and where he goes. Fandom: DUE SOUTH Pairing: Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski/Ray Vecchio Length: 4,768 words Author on LJ: spuffyduds (also on DW) Author Website: Fic tag on AO3Why this must be read:Spuffyduds' fics have appeared many a time here at the crack_van, and with good reason. This is a fantastic Vecchio story that jumps back and forth between his preparing for Vegas, his readjustment to being Vecchio again, and his (mis)adventures up north with Kowalski and Fraser. It's warm, funny journey to OT3, with an adorable Kowalski and a slightly manipulative (but in their best interests) Fraser. And her Vecchio is spot-on as he navigates the challenges of going undercover, transitioning out of undercover work, and Canada--who still has it in for him. Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH Pairing: none Length: short Author on LJ: not known Author Website: HEREWhy this must be read: It’s not just another Kira-explanation story. It’s one of the best Kira-explanation stories ever written. Easy for Starsky. Not so easy for Hutch.
Hutch accepted the forgiveness, the reaffirmation of friendship, gratefully, absorbing its warmth into the cold, dark hole which had slowly and inexorably taken the place of his heart over this past year. The warmth soothed him, filled him, but couldn't quite heal him. Starsky -- dear, resilient, ever trusting Starsky -- Starsky perhaps would heal as he had healed in the past. Maybe even forget in time.
But Hutch.... Kenneth Hutchinson looked inside his own soul and was unable to forgive himself, for his judge was that cruelest magistrate of all -- himself. Guilt remained a heavy burden on his broad shoulders, settling as it had so often in the past, sinking sharp talons deep into his heart. Impulsively, Hutch pulled the other man into his arms, laying one cheek against the soft hair and holding on for dear life. He felt warm arms wrap themselves around his own waist, clinging tightly, seeking as well as offering comfort and solace. The Fiend by The Muse

Fandom: NCIS Pairing: Gibbs/Tony Length: 6,502 words Author on LJ: gjaneoAuthor Website: WWOMB (for older fics) ; more current ones, centralized locale unknown Why this must be read: Author Summary: Tony is being evasive about his plans for Valentine's Day. Ziva and McGee decide to snoop and get a surprise. I swear, I nearly bathed my keyboard with my Dr. Pepper more than once while reading this. Ziva, and McGee are worried about Tony being so quiet on his love life; flashes of Jeanne enter the picture. So, of course, being the worried friends that they are, they work with Abby to bug Tony's apartment to peek in on a date they suspect he has set up, just to watch out for him. Boy are they in for a surprise! What follows is some the absolute funniest lines and images that I've read recently in NCIS fandom, MST3K style. Just picturing these three sitting on the couch with popcorn like they're at the movies, watching Tony's night, with their hilarious commentary with make you snort, I guarantee. I adored McGee's faces (see icone) and the girls cheering Tony on. And then the twist at the end! I swear you'll be giggling long after reading not to mention just melting at the loving Gibbs/Tony. :) Voyeurs' Valentine's Surprise

Fandom: DOCTOR WHO/HUNGER GAMES Pairing: Amy/Rory Length: 2k Author on LJ: irony_rocksAuthor Website: Fiction index on LJWhy this must be read: Hunger Games/Doctor Who fusion. Amelia Pond and Rory Williams are chosen as District 8’s Tributes for the 100th Hunger Games. The Girl on Fire and The Boy with the Bread, revisioned. I have been on an Hunger Games kick the last few weeks in preparation for the movie, so it was completely by accident that I stumbled upon this crossover that could work for my DW recs this month on this comm. But, oh yes, this is glorious. Not only does the author have a wonderful deft hand at capturing the HG world, but the voices of DW characters ring true within it. Amy and Rory are tributes, and it also showcases the Doctor and River as former Victors that have to mentor them (with the lovely heartbreaking implications of PTSD for a guilt-ridden Doctor), and there's wonderful appearances of Donna and Jack, and a shout out to Martha and Rose (*sob*). All deftly written within 2k. District Eight(Mods, I need a Hunger Games tag? Thank you!) ( Snippet )

Fandom: DOCTOR WHO Pairing: Rory Williams/Eleventh Doctor Length: 8k Author on LJ: scribe Author Website: AO3 indexWhy this must be read: In which Amy dies and Rory, eventually, keeps going. Written sometime around S5, this is a heartbreaking and gloriously written story of how Rory loses Amy and is forced to keep on, and just... guh. It gets Rory so perfectly right, all the while building up the foundation for Rory/Doctor. The progression from Rory's grieving into actually feeling something for the Doctor is so wonderfully subtle and natural. Seventeen Things That Happen to Rory Williams, After( Snippet )

Fandom: LIFE ON MARS Pairing: Sam/Gene Length: 2,400 or so Author on LJ: fawsleyAuthor Website: Fic index @ lifein1973 Why this must be read/seen:I'm relatively new to the fandom, so one way I've been lucky enough to find outstanding fic is through fan artists who are inspired to illustrate it. That's what happened with fawsley's "Shining Tor." I saw basaltgrrl's beautiful illustration for it, which involved Sam and Gene's mirroring "cat that got the canary" grins and Sam relaxing into Gene's possessive grip, and knew I had to read it. And oh my, am I glad that I did. This is one of those rarer "Sam and Gene leave Manchester" fics and the way fawsley describes the setting--let alone Sam and Gene--is gorgeous. And as for Sam and Gene, Gene's acting...odd. He lets Sam drive the Cortina. There aren't any homophobic rants when they discover that their missing person is in fact living with his boyfriend. Sam wonders what's going on with Gene while readers wonder whether they'll have their first time in the back of the Cortina. This is a wonderful hesitant!Gene fic filled with banter and fog and realizations. ( Excerpt )Shining Tor by fawsley and the gorgeous, atmospheric illo. by basaltgrrl here

Fandom: HARRY POTTER Pairing: Gen Length: 2k-ish Author on LJ: fiery_flamingoAuthor's Website: Couldn't find one Why this must be read: This is a gen piece originally written for hp_darkfest. The author dives right into the angst and really examines the way the Black family deals with grief. The story focuses on Andromeda, who has lost the most out of any of the Blacks. A really excellent story that rips your guts out. In This Valley of Dying Stars

Fandom: Star Trek The Next Generation Pairing: Picard/Q Length: Short Author on LJ: ?Author Website: http://www.intimations.org/fanfic/Why this must be read:This story is short and sweet so I don’t want to say too much and spoil it but basically Picard says something Q did not expect and things get a little complicated. Q fixes everything so there’s a happy ending and it’s just really adorable and funny.

Fandom: BANDOM Pairing: Frank/Gerard, Gerard/Gerard, Frank/Gerard/Gerard Length: 12,940 words Author on LJ: greedy_dancer & greedy_dancerAuthor on AO3: greedy_dance Why this must be read: The tale of Frank and the four Gerards, and of the afternoon that set everything in motion. This story is so much more than the "simple" time-travel PWP it seems at first glance. It's sad and happy and so full of love - Frank's love for Gerard in all his incarnations and Gerard's love and understanding of his younger selves. It's also a fantastic character portrait of Gerard even though it's written from Frank's POV. Getting to see the different versions of Gerard together like this really brings home how much he's changed over the band's career. A heartbreaking and heartwarming and scorchingly hot story. I can't believe my turn as driver is almost up! I might have to begin posting a few a day.... Fandom: LIFE ON MARS Pairing: Sam/Gene Length: 1,820 Author on LJ: lozenger8Author Website: HereWhy this must be read:It's absolutely gorgeous, for one, and gives us a Gene who, while he takes pleasure from rougher sex with Sam, has mixed feelings about it and turns the tables on a pain-demanding Sam, a Sam who eventually finds himself discovering that he doesn't always need pain in order to feel, that soft touches can be pleasurable too. I love that this fic gives us a Sam who can be single-minded and selfish while at the same time showing us why Gene loves and worries about him. And it's hot and lyrical at the same time--some of the most gorgeous power play and discussion of the differences between masochism and submission that I've ever read.
