The planets aligned just so... and I am reccing gen twice in a row! But here's the thing... this story, like the last, has a kind of different angle. I hope y'all enjoy.

Fandom: THE MAN FROM UNCLE
Pairing: no pairing
Length: not terribly long, a few pages
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: you can find more at File 40
Why this must be read: Ok, I like me some creepy supernatural goings on. And I like our boys concerned for each other and it was time that Napoleon go save Illya (since our last jaunt in the van had Napoleon in peril) I like balance, what can I say. I enjoyed this story and I had to bookmark it for rereading in future because sometimes you just want something that is like a real episode of MFU, right? And this is, it's as if the author took a story off the screen for us to read. I could only find two stories by this author, I don't know what's up with that, it is sad making. But the story is NOT. It's all good alla time, give it a try.

09:55 am "A Forgotten Encounter" series by Tarshil (rated T or probably PG-13)
Fandom: DEATH NOTE
Pairing: none
Length: ~22000
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author Website: Fanfiction.net
Why this must be read:

This gen-fic series presumes that L and Light met before canon, when Light was a kid and L was a teenager. They gave each other the false names of Dupin and Tsuki, and then later (mostly) forgot about it. This might sound like a premise that is difficult to believe, but the quality writing makes it work, weaving a deeply interesting pre-canon adventure for the two main characters of Death Note. The kid and teenager forge a brief friendship that has well-thought-out parallels to their canon pseudo-friendship.

Of course, they are destined to be enemies when they are older, but this series really outlines the fact that L and Light are kindred spirits who would get along, if only Light wasn't Kira. It's angsty, yes, but in a good way. This fanfic series saves its angst for the meaningful moments and uses it precisely. The angst and sadness are balanced out by other moods such as an easy-going camaraderie, exciting adventure, and plenty of characterization.

The ending meshes with events of the anime canon, so you will understand it the best if you've watched the entire anime, but I believe it will still be an enjoyable read if you've only had exposure to the manga. It is very spoilery for the mid-point climax and for the final showdown.

Vidder on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] daasgrrl
Musical artist: Harry Chapin
Pairing: Gen
Vidder's website: daasgrrl's House vids
Why this vid kicks ass:
This is one of those vids that makes you smack your forehead and go, "It's so obvious - why didn't I think of that?" Although even if you had, it probably wouldn't have been quite this awesome. I can't describe this better than [livejournal.com profile] daasgrrl does in her summary: "In the beginning, there was Sherlock Holmes. And Holmes brought forth the brilliant doctor House, embodied by the lovely Hugh Laurie. Who prior to that in Fortysomething played a slightly less brilliant doctor, Paul Slippery, who begat three sons, the eldest of whom was played by the equally-lovely-if-somewhat-peculiarly-named Benedict Cumberbatch. Who of course grew up to play Sherlock. And the Universe looked upon its work and pronounced it good. And then my head exploded."

Vidder: petitecuriosity
Musical artist: Garfunkel and Oates
Pairing: Sam/Wilson, hints of House/Wilson
Vidder on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] petitecuriosity
Vidder's website: petitecuriosity's YouTube Channel
Why this vid kicks ass:
[livejournal.com profile] petitecuriosity occasionally bemoans the fact that she doesn't have access to editing software of the desired degree of sophistication, but in my opinion she more than makes up for this with the creativity of her background track and story choices. In this vid, she sets the tension of the House/Wilson/Sam triangle against the perfect song ("Me, You, and Steve"), and hilarity ensues.

Why this vid kicks ass:
Masterble/[livejournal.com profile] jlk_lumberjack made only a handful of House vids before moving on to apply her brilliance to The Big Bang Theory, but three of them make it into my top five. I don't even know how to describe this particular vid, which crops up as a fan favorite whenever polls are taken. Let's just call it a hilarious crack vid structured around the conceit that Hugh Laurie is the big banana* of the House set.

*no, I don't mean top banana. Really.

Vidder: pollokvids
Musical artist: Ronan Keating
Pairing: Jim/Blair
Vidder on LJ: unknown
Vidder’s Website: Pollokvids on YouTube

Why this vid kicks ass: Because it highlights our favorite strong silent type--Jim.

Even people who only know The Sentinel through fanfic know that Blair is the chatty one and Jim is not. Although he might not use words, Jim’s got other communication skills: those expressive eyes, that killer smile, and all that touching, especially with Blair. Pollokvids has picked out a nice variety of scenes, including ones not often seen (with notable exceptions like that hug in BMB). Altogether, she’s matched up clips with the lyrics to a really lovely song, famous from the “Notting Hill” movie soundtrack, but it works well as a TS theme song. ^_^

So sit back and enjoy Jim expressing himself in the ways he does best.

Why this vid kicks ass:

This short silent film (with written dialogue) is an original animation that tells a story between L and Light. It's a parody of the L and Light pairing, and very amusing.

Why this vid kicks ass:

With all-original animation, this parody video has some dead Death Note characters (plus several who never died in canon) all rising as zombies to torment Light. It's hilarious and contains a lot of little details and references that just make me smile.

Vidder: B of TeamJAMB
Musical artist: The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, David Bendeth
Pairing: L/Misa
Vidder on LJ: Unknown
Vidder's website: TeamJAMB on YouTube
Why this vid kicks ass:

This melancholy song-vid tells a story through the song itself, clips from the anime, and the added device of a letter from L to Misa. The premise of the video is that L was in love with Misa during the Yotsuba arc. It is extremely spoilery for canon events.

06:37 pm VID REC: DEATH NOTE - "L and Raito's night"

Vidder on LJ: Unknown
Vidder's website: Go-Devil-Dante on deviantART | Go-Devil-Dante on newsgrounds.com
Why this vid kicks ass:

This original animation is a cruel kick in the face for L. Light brought him to a special love nest so they could have sex for the first time, but insists on L watching a video first. The video is... well... a surprise, but it's pretty shocking to L and probably will be to you too. Don't watch it if you can't take a lactation fetish.

Musical artist: Sound and music credits in the film list Tim Beacham, Priddis Music (priddis.com) & Tyler Langford
Pairing: none
Vidder on LJ: Unknown
Vidder's website: Daniel Bean Films | danielbeanfilms on YouTube
Why this vid kicks ass:

This is a parody of those "I'm a Mac and I'm a PC" commercials. What is better, a killing notebook, or a "death pad"? The animation barely moves and appears to be traced from the anime, but the plot of this is what really matters, and it is great. It manages to be very reminiscent of the real Death Note and completely insane crack fiction at the same time. Just when you think it's done, it pulls another trick.

Why this must be read:
From [livejournal.com profile] _runningmascara
Rapper AU... Don’t be scared! This follows the story of a struggling musician who leaves his hometown of Lyon for Madrid to find inspiration for his new music and to get away from past relationships and heartaches. I love this story because it doesn’t drop football completely as Gonzalo is a footballer for Real Madrid and still allows for so much imagination and space to create a whole new world that works perfectly with present time. This story pulls at heartstrings so much, with a touch of humour thrown in for good measure, and makes you want to keep reading it (and root for our couple). The author did a great job in incorporating minor characters as well, to keep the main ones fresh and exciting. The author has a knack of capturing snapshots when paired together with an overall story is amazing.

From [livejournal.com profile] shana0809
This piece came recommended to me by [livejournal.com profile] _runningmascara, [livejournal.com profile] slyreflection, and [livejournal.com profile] liroa15, and when all those ladies tell me something, I pay attention. And they're right. This piece is amazing, and a fitting last rec. All the characters are vivid and believable, the pacing is amazing, and once you start reading you won't want to stop. You'll get completely caught up in the story and the emotions.

What are you still doing reading this? Go read the fic!!!

Sergio calls him one day to invite him to watch the team train. Karim’s at the grocery store, cell phone held between his shoulder and his ear. He’s looking at two different cans in confusion and wondering how he can possibly tell which bean will taste different from the other. He blinks at the cans and puts both into his cart.

“You want me to what?”

“Come to training. Pip won’t shut the fuck up about you and you never come out with us, so come watch us practice.”

“Is this a ploy to force me out with you guys tonight?” Karim asks skeptically. Now he’s staring at two different melons. They look identical, but the labels tell him otherwise.

“Most likely, yes.”

“You don’t know how to lie do you?”

“Mostly likely, no.”

Karim snorts and puts the melons back. He moves toward the aisle with all of the pasta and carbohydrates because at least those he can identify and make. Theoretically. Spain confuses him.

“It’s open practice,” Sergio says on the other end of the line. “We’ll go for a few drinks after, it’ll be good for you.”

“How do you know what’s good for me?” Karim asks quizzically. He doesn’t know why he asks these things because Sergio, like Pipita, never gives him an answer he likes.

“Pipa talks a lot.”

Karim shakes his head. “Don’t I know it.”

Watching Real Madrid practice is a bit unlike anything else Karim’s ever experienced. Valdebebas is a monolith of Real Madrid history, much like everything else Real Madrid, Karim is quickly coming to discover. He remembers watching Yoann and Samir practice from the stands, one in white and the other with a bright purple bib over his Olympique Lyonnais training shirt. Olympique Lyonnais is an immense emblem in Lyon, but Karim thinks he never understood the importance and gravity of football until Pipita introduced him to Real Madrid.

They don’t let him sit in the stands. He stands awkwardly near benches where the reserve goalkeepers in yellow talk to him and ask him too many questions for his liking. There’s a tall young man with extremely tall hair who introduces himself as Callejón.

“I’ve listened to your music,” Callejón grins at him as they both watch the rest of the team play five-a-side.

“That’s impossible,” Karim frowns.

“Because it’s Madrid?” Callejón’s grin widens. It takes over his face and somehow his hair stands even taller than it had a minute ago. “Don’t underestimate Madrid, Karim Benzema.”

He pats Karim on the shoulder as their coach—José Mourinho, a man with an intimidating scowl and somewhat sardonic tendencies—yells for him. He looks back at Karim with a smile as he jogs over to his team, bright orange bib nearly blinding in contrast to the white Real Madrid training jersey.

“Also, don’t underestimate Sergio Ramos.”

It's important to note that the author rated this PG-16 for sexual situations and language, but for me it's more an R situation.

Why this must be read:

Mercy definitely qualifies as a new author as she only posted her first House fics to comms about a week and a half ago. They are not perfect - she is unapologetic about Briticisms, and anachronisms appear as well - but she brings a unique perspective to House/Wilson fandom that has everyone excited. This fic in particular features a fresh, original House voice that is a little chilling but totally believable in its rapidfire switches between his current case, his past experiences, and his real-time sensations. Like poor Wilson, you may not be quite sure what hit you.

Why this vid kicks ass: I don't know if it's become clear through my reccs, but I am very much attached to Mr. Stefan Salvatore. I tend to watch the show through his eyes. That's why I think this vid is stunning. Because I have never -- never had this many feelings for Damon when watching the show. It beautifully shows both his relationships with Stefan and Elena, the similarities and differences in each, and it just becomes the most perfect character study of Damon.

Why this vid kicks ass:

It's an HBO war miniseries mash-up of awesome! Band of Brothers is the fandom most analogous to Generation Kill - a fictionalized account of real military guys who didn't ask to be written about, etc - and the vidder here seamlessly moves between 1944 and 2003, between the Army and the Marines, between two vastly different wars, showing us how war has changed. And how it really hasn't. A fantastic take on the bonds of brotherhood, then and now.

Why this vid kicks ass:

This vid is just incredible hands down. From what I've read around the net, this vid means different things to different people. But the underlying thing for me about it, and the thing I love the most, is how it highlights the fundamental bottom line for Supernatural, the relationship between these two brothers and the utter depths and sacrifices they will go to and through for each other. The absolute pain and despair that seems to be their lot and fate (which is another theme I enjoyed about this vid, the inevitability of fate and overcoming the insurmountable) doesn't come between them and what they mean to each other. And while the sacrifices they make for each other and the heart breaking road this vid takes them on will tear your soul to pieces, the absolute love for each other as brothers and friends makes this vid a strangely hopeful one to me.

And beyond the emotional aspects of this piece, there is the fantastic job in music selection, monologue overlaying, and editing. Words and images are combined in such a way that is jaring, geling, and just a work of art all together. Her choice of monologue (Dean's speech over Sam's body in the Season 2 finale)to begin the vid is a stroke of genius when combined with all the other elements of other sound clips, images, song, and emotional depth. It sets the tone for the whole vid as we are taken on an incredible journey of grief, initial hopelessness, deep wishes for fate to change, and brotherly love. Altogether, this is a vid that illustrates some of the strong passions and emotions that Supernatural is for me. It's the show that makes me feel and this vid does the same.

Musical artist: The Weakerthans
Pairing: Brad Colbert/Nate Fick
Vidder on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] lunasky

Why this vid kicks ass:

It's a quiet song, which works beautifully with Brad/Nate, who are often defined by the things they do not say. Luna perfectly captures Nate in this, showing us how he reacts to the shit rolling down on him and how those quiet moments with Brad help him cope. I found it striking that so many of the clips are taken from night scenes; the eyefucking between these two is so epic you can cast aside half the footage and still do a vid of long, lingering looks. Just lovely.
