Why this must be read: I like all kinds of fics - fluffy, angsty, PWP, epic and sometimes I like really dark stories. Telesilla has created a sumptuously dark, AU universe where the city of the Ancients is populated by people that TPTB on Earth wanted to get rid of - cruel, warped yet extremely talented people that were too valuable to kill but too dangerous to keep around. After his parents die, 16-year-old Rodney McKay is brought to the Pegasus galaxy by Atlantis' CSO, his older sister Jeannie, as a 'gift' (okay, boy toy) for John Sheppard, Atlantis' paranoid, moody and utterly sadistic military commander. Not long after Rodney arrives, a conspiracy comes to light, sides are drawn and Rodney struggles to find his place in this strange new world. "Make the Devil Feel Surprise" is epic in scope with a marvelously intricate and engrossing plot with lots of nice twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat.
The characters are still recognizable as themselves but with a diabolical twist. I know this won't be everyone's cup of tea, but if you're looking for something different and you're not adverse to taking a literary walk on the dark side this might be just what you're looking for. Personally, I find myself coming back to this universe a couple of times a year. There are two long stories and one short story set here so far and none of them disappoint. I've included links to the first story in the series as well as to the series as a whole.
