12:12 am We’ll Always Have Paris by Hestia (PG)

Fandom: SPOOKS (MI-5)
Pairing: Ruth Evershed/Danny Hunter
Length: One-shot, 2700 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] hestia8
Author Website: Hestia's Spooks fic on livejournal
Why this must be read:

In the early days, Spooks had some wonderful lighter moments when the characters would take a long hard look at the absurdity of a life of espionage and … just roll with it. This story captures that spirit exactly, as Danny, in need of a girlfriend, asks Ruth for a little duplicity. Hilarity ensues, but lurking underneath are the strong bonds of friendship.

The characters are so just quintessentially themselves here, with Danny launching himself into a harebrained personal venture with no chance of succeed in, and Ruth falling all over herself to be helpful. Through some really wonderful dialogue, Hestia really captures the quirky charm of the early series team friendships.

Excerpt:

‘I need a girlfriend.’

Ruth looked up at him. ‘You know, there are many, many ways I could answer that, but I’m going to go with asking what exactly does that have to do with me?’

‘You’re a girl.’

‘Oh no.’

Hi, I'm [livejournal.com profile] podfic_lover and I'll be reccing for due South this month. As a first time driver here I'm without a real plan in the moment, though I will try and include a wide variety pairings, genres and media.

Fandom: DUE SOUTH
Pairing: Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski
Length: ~1200
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] malnpudl
Author Website: longer Fanfic Shortfic

Why this must be read/listened to:
I discovered this steaming hot, though romantic and completely in character phone sex fic via [livejournal.com profile] malnpudl's own podfic of it, which she recorded for the recent round of dS/C6D Tag.

Therefore I got my voice kink button pushed twice over, while listening with Ray to a snarky, sneaky Fraser telling a shaggy-dog (or should we say wolf) story.

07:04 am Rhapsody by Candy Apple (NC-17)
Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH
Pairing: Starsky/Hutch
Length: Approximately 100 pages
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author Website: Unknown - This is Zine Fic
Why this must be read: I hope all of the S&H fans are enjoying our ride through June! On deck this time is a charming AU story with all the bones of a good case story. Hutch is a famous concert pianist with what seems to be an enviable life - talent, acclaim, money, a beautiful fiancee. But, he also occupies an isolated and lonely world. Oh - and someone is trying to kill him. Starsky, an ex-police detective with an interesting life story and his own share of demon-battling, enters the picture as Hutch's head of security. From the start, the guys notice a special spark in one another - developing their unique partnership based on trust and respect and friendship.

Candy Apple writes a compelling story and a wonderful characterization of the boys. Their lives are different here, but they are unequivocally recognizable. Their friendship/relationship is a joy to read, and the case story elements are well plotted and executed.

This story is available only as a standalone zine, and I have included an excerpt from the publisher, along with the publisher's website.

Fandom: HOCKEY RPF
Pairing: Matt Duchene/Semyon Varlamov
Length: ~ 5,900
Author on LJ:[livejournal.com profile] vamm_goda (friends locked personal LJ),
Author Website: [livejournal.com profile] elimatethepages or on AO3

Why this must be read: “Those flowers? You say they are flowers?” Scenes I found so touching: admiring the same players growing up, being lost in the street and being found, the dandelion motive  (that scrappy little flower that just won't die <3).... also there is a reason for the R-rating and that reason is hot.

Bonus: Extensive primer for the Colorado Avalanche

There is something very lyrical about this fic. The story itself is fantastic: grief and survivor's guilt after the Lokomotiv plane crash tragedy, a new team and a connection that is hard to explain. But what struck me the most - and what has haunted me to the point of reworking my whole posting schedule around it - is the use of language. There are a lot of stories that feature players who aren't English native speakers - the Russians, the Finns, the French-Canadians - but this story is about understanding beyond the spoken word, about making yourself understood, about being welcomed and fitting in.
It was written for the amazing [livejournal.com profile] hockeyrarepairs community challenge (attention: most of the content is locked for members, so you better join right away) that turned out enough great fic to keep me busy for a month or so.

09:24 pm "Clowns Left, Jokers Right" by Cat (NC-17)
Fandom: SUPER JUNIOR
Pairing: Kangin/Leeteuk (one-sided), Kangin/Heechul (eventual)
Length: ~9,000w
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] thedogstar (has moved to DW with the username padfoot)
Author Website: hermiones (DW) / AO3
Why this must be read: I was talking to my friend once, and she said "I read this one amazing Kangin fic—" and I said "Was it 'Clowns Left Jokers Right?'" and she said "HOW DID YOU KNOW." This writer has written two of the best(-known) Kangin fics in the fandom (the other is "White Elephant"), but this one is 1) longer and 2) more complex/satisfying, so it's what gets special mention here. This fic deals realistically with recovering from a broken heart while not becoming angsty or depressing, has a beautiful, unhurried progression, and is funny and touching in all the right ways.
