Fandom: SUPER JUNIOR Pairing: Donghae/Eunhyuk, sort of Length: ~1,500w Author on LJ: catskiltAuthor Website: jewelledhoursWhy this must be read: This rec took me so long because I couldn't decide which of this author's fics to rec. ;_; If I could, I would have rec'd Running Blind With Eyes Wide Open, but as that is a (very satisfying 57,000+ words) WIP, I can't. So instead, have this: a light-hearted short piece that captures several of the author's strengths: her lovely characterizations, especially when she writes Eunhyuk/Donghae (Donghae in particular really shines here, with all of his whimsy, unique logic, and deceptively simple affection); the ability to phrase things in the most beautiful ways; poignant scenes spun from simple details easily overlooked; and the way she grounds her fics in reality, even her AUs—whether it be the reality of the boys' real-life situations (as here), or the reality of their deep ties to each other. Check out her full body of work, though! You won't be sorry. *Comprehension notes: Hyukjae is Eunhyuk's real name (Eunhyuk is his stage name). Sukira, also called "Kiss the Radio," is a radio show hosted by Leeteuk and Eunhyuk. KBS Cool FM

Fandom: XENA: WARRIOR PRINCESS Pairing: Xena/Gabrielle Length: 81,781 words Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: archived at The Royal Academy of BardsWhy this must be read:In time of ancient Gods, Warlords and Kings, a land in turmoil cried for a hero. She was Aquila, a mighty chicken forged in the heat of battle. The power, the passion, the danger -- her courage will change the world.Wait, what? OK, the premise of these stories is Gabrielle writing a series of fables based on her life with Xena. And as we all know, fables must have animals for main characters... yes, Gabrielle casts herself and Xena as chickens, Aquila and Billie, who, along with their friend Ergo the horse, travel the world righting wrongs. Each story is framed by scenes of Gabrielle and Xena interacting (well, flirting) before we launch into the story of the warrior fowl. No, this is no more cracktacular than the show (considering that in the ACTUAL CANON, various characters were turned into barnyard animals MORE THAN ONCE), really, and it's actually rather sweet. As well as extremely silly -- full of more puns than you can shake your tailfeathers at! Hi, I’m talimenios79 and I’ll be driving the Sherlock Holmes van this month. Sorry I forgot to introduce myself, I’ve been fighting a sinus infection. I am a huge John Watson fan and a Sherlock/John shipper. I love also love gen, het and strong female characters. I think I have got a nice mix of recs for you this month. So let’s get to it. Fandom: SHERLOCK HOLMES FRANCHISE Pairing: John/Sarah Length: 29504 words Author on LJ: ajhall_ficsAuthor Website: Her Website, AJHall on AO3Why this must be read:Because this utterly compelling mystery is delightfully meta. Sherlock, John, and Sarah investigate a murder involving fandom. The sly fandom portrayal is so much fun. An epic Raymond Chandler fandom flame war and Fandom Wank both figure in to the investigation. The characterization sparkles. Sherlock’s annoying, smug brilliance is spot-on, while John is his sweet, BAMFy self. Sarah is brave, smart and you can totally see why John likes her. She is well aware she is battling it out with Sherlock for John's attention and fully capable of holding her own. The Affair of the Asphyxiated Acafan

Fandom: THE HUNGER GAMES Pairing: technically, Annie/Johanna, Gale/Katniss/Peeta, but pretty gen Length: 8,524 words Author on LJ: not that I'm aware Author Website: her AO3 pageWhy this must be read:Because it's sweet and soothing and kind of wish-fulfilly in a way that doesn't simply ignore canon. And because it deals with Annie's insanity in an interesting way, one that's not always comfortable, but is comprehensible. ( Excerpt: )like a fortune sold

Fandom: XENA: WARRIOR PRINCESS Pairing: Xena/Gabrielle Length: 4,891 words Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: fanfic archived at The Royal Academy of Bards, profic websiteWhy this must be read:This is one of those lovely gems of a story that I return to for the warm and fuzzies... and the hilarity. The premise just tickles me, but I don't want to give it away so I won't say much. Xena and Gabrielle celebrate the holidays in the modern world and get a new/old addition to their household. ^_^ Solstice Memories by Mickey Minner

Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH Pairing: Starsky/Hutch (alluded) Length: Short and sweet Author on LJ: Unknown Author's Website: http://www.starskyhutcharchive.net/viewuser.php?uid=258Why this must be read: It is always a pleasure to welcome a new writer to our fandom. Duluthgirl is new, and has started to share her own fresh voice and vision with us in the land of S&H. She's really starting to find her footing, as she discovers the boys and conjures new adventures for them. In this little snippet, Hutch ponders his partnership with Starsky and what new directions could mean for them. Hutch has his angsty-hat on, and I always find him irresistible like this. And it's very possible he finds someone else irresistible - Starsky. Duluthgirl has a page as noted above under "author's website". I highly recommend that you wander into another story or two of hers while you are over there. And if you enjoy, perhaps leave a note in the "reviews" section to let her know. All writers love feedback, but for a brand new writer - feedback can be very special, indeed. At the Water's Edge

Fandom: BANDOM Pairing: Victoria Asher/Brendon Urie Length: Novella Author on LJ: schneesternAuthor Website: Fic TagWhy this must be read: This is one of the most beautiful post-apocalyptic fics I have ever read. Brendon and Victoria are not characters that are usually in the same place, but they make such a good, interesting connection here. It's sad, full of memories of their lost bands and the broken way they're trying to cope with it, but it's also hopeful. Completely gorgeous and full of beautiful human interaction. Obvious warnings for character death. Square One

So, while perusing the list of fics I compiled to rec this month, I suddenly realized I'd unconsciously created a theme: John Cena is Human, After All!
In honor of this discovery, I bring you a fic about one of Cena's very public human moments.
Fandom: WWE
Pairing: John Cena/OC
Length: 49,679 words
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: shannygoat on ff.net
Why this must be read: because on October 11, 2006, John Cena paid a visit to The Howard Stern Show. The following is an excerpt of their conversation.
Howard Stern: Would you ever do a fat chick?
John Cena: Absolutely. Believe it or not, there was an instance not too long ago, where I hit the 280 mark.
Several minutes later...
Stern: Did you have to lift up the flaps of skin to get to the vagina?
Cena: You gotta know your way around.
Females worldwide: *headdesk*

The sequel, View Askew, is also worth a gander, though it seems to have been abandoned 14 chapters in.

Fandom: SPOOKS (MI-5) Pairing: Adam Carter / Fiona Carter and Adam Carter / Ros Myers Length: one shot, 1600 words Author on LJ: not that I know of Author Website: none known Why this must be read: This story weaves together two relationships -- Adam/Fiona and Adam/Ros -- into a portrait of Adam Carter, a man full of contradictions, completely at home with lies and spying, but so often at a loss in real life. Like the ee cummings poem from which the story takes its name, Zai’s writing is wonderfully evocative and sensual, rendering Adam and Fiona’s Damascus affair in sparse, poetic details. Adam and Ros’ present day liason is drawn just as strongly, but with a sense of loss and confusion that gives Adam’s character more depth than the show’s writers were, perhaps, willing to explore on screen.
Afterwards, they'd had fifteen minutes to lie beside each other. They fit these things into impossible windows of time. He'd lain beside her with her pulled back against him, blindfolded, blind, with his nose pressed against the back of her hair, and he whispered to her what they were going to do about her husband, his hand finding the curve of her breast while they talked, while he talked, and she listened, and, dimly, later, he remembered thinking that he didn't know which one of them was Orpheus, and who was leading who out of hell. snow carefully everywhere descending

Fandom: HOCKEY RPF Pairing: Eric Staal (always a girl!) gen, Length: 6,789 Author on LJ: mardiaAuthor Website: on AO3 and imaginarysound (RPF fic journal) Why this must be read: Because Erica Staal is perfect! This is a genderswap story, a "what if Eric Staal had always been a woman?". There are actually a couple of genderswap stories around (Sydney Crosby, Bobbi Ryan and some others). The basic idea for all of them is that for some unspecified reason there are a few female players in the NHL. Isn't it astounding how het pairings can find their way into a fandom that seems to be naturally set up for m/m only? In the "we set our dreams to carry us" verse there is Erica Staal, a strawberry blonde with a tendency to blush, and I adore her. The five stories in this verse take us through the first few years of her career and are all around brilliant (there is Erica Staal/Jeff Skinner later on). But "Five Hockey Players..." - the first story in the series- is totally gen and tells the story of how Erica becomes the first female NHL team captain. It's told from the view points of different people - team mates, publicist, opponents- and it works so well! ( The first lines should be enough to hook you )Five Hockey Players Erica Staal Never Dated on AO3and Five Hockey Players Erica Staal Never Dated on LJ
