12:12 am Tiger Hunt by X-Parrot (T/PG-13)
I don't know how you get a van running on paddles to spin out, but I think I did. Doing my best to get back up to cruising speed!

Fandom: ONE PIECE
Pairing: None, gen
Length: ~65k
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] xparrot
Author Website: X Never Marks the Spot
Why this must be read: Guys, this is X-Parrot fic. THE original action/adventure/angst/Sanji-and-Zoro-are-Starsky-and-Hutch author (well ... as far as I can tell, anyway.)  In fact, this is the author that got me to being a One Piece fan for keeps, though not with this particular fic, if only because it wasn't finished at the time. That honor instead goes to Seven Deaths. (But I digress.)

I always find it impressive when an author manages to finish an epic fic with style, especially when there is a gap of five years between the major body of the work and the final few chapters, like here, in Tiger Hunt. It was a surprise and also an absolute joy to see it finish out after so long, yet the ending doesn't seem like it was rushed or forced.

This fic is filled with suspense as the crew finds themselves pitted in a desperate struggle of survival against one of their strongest members. It's also the fulfillment of the massive, aborted, captain-vs-first-mate clash only half-realized in Luffy and Zoro's early-on canon tangle (one that was, at the time, brought on by Luffy's mistaken conclusions). Only in this fic, Zoro also means to pick this fight—or thinks he does, anyway. Despite the immensely powerful element of having these two inseparable companions so at odds, X-Parrot doesn't neglect the other crew members as they race to right the situation before one or more of them end up dead. Zoro turned against the crew is perhaps not the most "original" theme out there, but some tropes are popular for very good reason, and when I think of that sort of plot, this is the first example my mind jumps to, without exception.

For anyone who might have been in fandom some years ago and remembers reading this when it was first being posted—don't hesitate! The ending is everything you were ever waiting for!

12:44 am Elocation (or, Exit Us) by daygloparker (PG-13)

Fandom: SPOOKS (MI-5)
Pairing: Ruth Evershed / Harry Pearce
Length: one shot (5000 words)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] daygloparker
Author Website: daygloparker’s fic masterlist

Why this must be read:

Harry and Ruth: a not-exactly relationship nine years and several thousand meaningful looks in the making, which the Spooks producers and an awful lot of fanfic writers mined for immense verbiage. And yet it would be a mistake to think that Ruth was only the sum of her relationship to Harry.

This story follows Ruth’s thoughts during her time in Cyprus, back from the early days of Tom Quinn’s team, to her relationship with Georg, to her return to the job at MI-5 cost her so dearly. Like Ruth, the story speaks non-linearly and in parentheticals, yet always gets to the heart of matter. Underneath the MI-5 officer gone to ground, there are all the realizations and emotions simmering away and bubbling up from underneath.

The relationship between Ruth and Harry wasn’t so much about the relationship itself, but each of two of them, and everything about their character and choices that kept them pushing each other away. This story captures that complex dynamic, and Ruth Evershed, exactly.

Excerpt:

When she's alone in the house, Ruth practices.

From the garden to the bedroom: eight seconds. From the kitchen to the bedroom: eleven seconds (because you have to wind around the staircase and, well). Passports, overnight bag in the hall closet; car keys always left in the bowl on the tabletop in the hallway. It's a wonder George never notices all the provisions she's made around the house. Or maybe he has, and it's just another quirky thing about this woman he loves, Ruth. She always parks the car with the driver's side facing the house, and when it tells her it shouldn't matter how he parks it when he takes it out, she wants to shout at him: you have no idea – you have no idea how valuable those few seconds might be one day.

When she's alone in the house, she practices.

One day, it pays off. Ruth pauses for a moment, letting it all come at her for a split second, and then she is gone.

At her best, Jo Portman was spunky (and I normally hate spunky); at her worse, I wondered how exactly how much loss and trauma the writers could pile on one character in the name of enormous doe-eyes and suspenseful cliffhangers.

Ultimately, Jo suffered from the fatal Spooks supporting character syndrome of under-development followed by untimely and rather contrived demise. This story postulates a different what-if in which Jo outlives her friends and colleagues in MI-5.

The author really captures Jo’s combination of toughness, idealism, and sheer determination to just keep on going, despite everything, and to stay human throughout it all.

Fandom: Bandom
Pairing: Gabe Saporta/Patrick Stump
Length: Short
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] iphignia939
Author Website: Tags Page
Why this must be read: In which a sixteen-year-old Patrick meets Midtown era Gabe Saporta and completely fails to recognize him, but totally succeeds in getting blown by him. All of Gale's fics are fantastic, with real voices and hilarious inner thoughts, and this one is no exception. Also, the porn is always incredibly hot. The epilogue to this is possibly the best part.

Fandom: THE HUNGER GAMES
Pairing: Katniss/Peeta
Length: 5,868 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] wisteria_
Author Website: None that I know of
Why this must be read:

This story is from Peeta's POV, post-Mockingjay. A lot of people have tried to write this story, about how we get from the end to the epilogue, but this is by far one of the best versions I've seen. The pacing is perfect, and Peeta's voice is dead on. It's just a fantastic missing scene; or, really, missing book.

Aargh! I only have a week left! And so many more awesome fics to rec! *glares at the calendar* Just where has this month gone?

Fandom: WWE
Pairing: John Cena/Randy Orton
Length: 3,601 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] imyourheaven
Author Website: Ria's fic LJ is [livejournal.com profile] lilypad_fiction
Why this must be read: because this fic is brain-meltingly, heart-stoppingly, I need a cold shower Right. NOW. hot.

Oh. My. God.
If you're in need of porn in your life (and who isn't?), I would run, not walk, over to Ria's LJ, and enjoy the awesomeness that is "I'm Sexy and I Know It", dominant Randy and "I Can't Stop Staring", submissive John.
Ria's writing has a haunting, lyrical quality that makes her scenario seem almost dream-like; it's easy to get sucked right into Randy's kitchen, and become mesmerized, along with John, by Randy's hands.
I promise you won't regret it.

08:44 pm Survival by youtooblondie (NC-17)
My June of touring you good folks & fans through the adventures of Starsky & Hutch is coming to an end. Only two more stops to go before we fill up the tank and hand the Squash keys back over to Hutch. I can only say again, as I've said each time - it's wonderful having everyone on board.

Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH
Pairing: Starsky/Hutch
Length: 1,350
Author on LJ: youtooblondie
Author's Website: http://youtooblondie.livejournal.com
Why this must be read: For many fans, "Survival" is a beloved hurt-comfort episode. It has all the trappings we love - Hutch is missing, leaving Starsky fiercely determined to find him...save him. Impossible odds or going to the ends of the earth are nothing to these guys when the other is in danger. In her six part work of prose and poetry, youtooblondie takes us directly into the frantic race, the danger, and the pain.  Using beautifully constructed language, she alternates points of view, placing us as witnesses with the guys and their entire spectrum of emotions. This story is filled with fear and desperation, hope and determination, devotion and sacrifice...and in the final part, a delicious little pay off. "Survival" - both the episode and youtooblondie's narration of emotions and events - captures the loyalty and love that is woven through "Starsky & Hutch."

Please - take the time to  stop over and settle down with this powerful piece. I guarantee you, it is enriching and exquisite.

Fandom: HOCKEY RPF
Pairing:  Eric Staal/Jeff Skinner
Length: ~ 70,000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] doctor_denmark
Author Website: on AO3

Why this must be read: .... this is a "sort of babysitter"AU. The "must be read" part should be self-explanatory.

I love this story for a variety of reasons:

1.  Jeff Skinner is the most adorable 19 year-old former Olympic figure skater on the planet.

2. Joey, the three year old that is written like an actual, you know, kid and not like a vague idea of what a kid could be like.

3. The supporting cast, both the original characters and the Staal and Skinner families. My favorite: Jordan (see icon). Favorite scenes: the Staal brothers having lunch (I laughed so hard!)

4. Eric Staal being weird.

5. .....  I could go on for quite some time. It's funny and domestic and you'll read it with a smile on your face.
