Pairing: mainly gen; background Monroe/Rosalee
Length: 1,751 words

Why this must be read:

This is one of my favorite friendship pieces in Grimm fandom. It shows the strong bond between our gang of three, Nick, Monroe, and Rosalee. They support each other in times of trial and gather together in down time for popcorn and shooting the breeze. They give each other grief over dating, patch up twisted ankles, and give hugs of comfort over poisonous cats. The author has delved into what's made this threesome friendship so strong, and I loved every word. She breathes life into this extremely strong triad and makes me feel every interaction.

Her Monroe character voices (who the story is told by) is also fantastic. She's got every nuance of his mental patterns and the transition from solitary clockmaker to friend of Grimm and Fuchsbau down hard. She's also talented enough to characterize Rosalee and Nick very well through little hints we get from Monroe, like Rosalee's stubbornness and Nick's growing maturity as a Grimm and general protector.

Why this must be read: My second [livejournal.com profile] bandombigbang 2012 Wave One rec. I've never run into a fic that shot for gothic before, much less hit it so well. The tone and setting are extremely unique - this would make a great not-in-the-fandom read - and the emotions evoked are just as strong on multiple rereads as it was the first time. Forget this being one of my favorite fanfics of all time; it's already one of my favorite fictional stories of all time.

12:49 pm Fortune's Favoured Child by UKJess (PG-13)
Fandom: STAR TREK:THE ORIGINAL SERIES
Pairing: Gen
Length: ~18,000
Author on LJ: n/a
Author Website: UKJess's Omnium-Gatherum
Why this must be read:

For her Kirk voice.  He is an extension of who he is in The Original Series.  Very few people are able to navigate between the various contradictions that is Captain James T. Kirk, and UKJess really captures his voice.  She manages to discuss and highlight his insecurity, arrogance, bravado, and even his empathy and intelligence all within this story.  It simply is an amazing character study.  The reactions of the various members of his crew as well such as Bones, Spock, Uhura, Scotty, etc also feel very in character.  I almost felt as if I was watching a TOS episode.  I also really liked how the tension was built up and finally how the resolution came about in the end.  Almost as if something was broken and put back together but yet was not quite the same.  Just lovely!

The basic summary of the story is Kirk, Bones, Spock and some members of his crew get taken hostage by a enemy empathic species.  And Kirk starts to break apart in front of his crew.  How the crew deals and reacts is the basis of the story.

Fandom: AVENGERS
Pairing: Clint/Natasha
Length: 4364 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] workerbee73
Author Website: @ AO3
Why this must be read:

This is a really lovely Clint/Natasha story that slips from past (when Clint made the call to save Natasha instead of killing her) to present, with a hopeful eye towards their future together.

"You could be more careful."

"You could learn not to get shot."

"I just do it for the sympathy."

The corner of her mouth quirks upward in response. There's nothing much else to say tonight and he hasn't said it in a while and no one could ever accuse him of forgetting to mark an occasion. "You really should get around to marrying me sometime, Romanoff."

The quirk turns into a smile. "Shut up, Barton," she says and that's that. One – two, ritual complete. It's as close as either of them comes to saying I love you because people like them don't really say things like that. Besides, this is better anyway.
