Why this must be read:

Beginning with "The Same, but More", a Captain America era 'first time' Steve/Bucky story, this wonderful and long series moves directly to the modern Avengers era and paints an insightful portrait of Steve Rogers, whose public image doesn't quite match the reality of the man inside:
To the people of this century he was a fossil, a tool kept around because he was a useful symbol of a simpler time. A poster-boy with a shield, an innocent who never swore, had never had sex and would be shocked to hear of two men being in love.

It was a load of crap.

This, however, isn't just a story about a 'man out of time' - because a third of the way through the series, a discovery is made: spoilers for eight year old comics canon )

This series is wonderfully written with strong characterizations and even stronger emotions. The "Long Range Reconnaissance" series is an excellent read, even if - or maybe especially if - you rarely read Steve-centric stories.

Author Summary: Uchiha Mikoto takes the hand of an outcast child, and with it rewrites the destiny of her clan.

Why this must be read: This is the second of the two 'let's fix the Uchiha massacre' stories that I decided to rec. I think this one is my favourite because it stars a much neglected character. As mother of Itachi and Sasuke, and wife to Fugaku, Uchiha Mikoto has the potential to wield some level of influence over some extremely powerful men. In canon that is never seen to happen, and interestingly in this story she doesn't either. Instead she simply, as the author says, takes the hand of an outcast child. This a story of how kindness repays itself if you let it, and how some people can simply never see the better path even when it's there to be taken. It's a lovely story, engaging and well-written, and containing a happy and loved chibi Naruto, which in and of itself is a joy. I hope you love this story as much as I do.
