Warnings: panic attacks, violence, cursing, abandonment issues
Author's Summary: Fifteen year old Neal is caught by the FBI in possession of forged paintings. Special Agent Peter Burke decides to give him a second chance at life. Will Neal take a leap of faith and finally trust someone to be there for him?

Why this must be read:

As the summary says, this is an AU where Peter catches Neal while he's still in his teens. This opens their family/ father-son dynamic up to a whole new level, which is the source of quite a few very cute scenes in this fanfiction. Neal, even though a teenager in this fanfiction, is still recognizably Neal and canon!Peter is very much in character, too. Angst, hurt and comfort are also part of the deal.

Why this must be read:

This is one of those fics that demonstrates the value of porn battle challenges, beyond their obvious joys. What begins as a simple moment of kink exploration turns into a negotiation of safe spaces, and the uncovering of unexpected emotional issues. I love how the issues are addressed here and the maturity of all involved.

Fandom: FIREFLY
Pairing: Gen

Why this must be read: This is set in that fraught, little-documented time between the end of the series and the BDM when many important things happened that we never actually saw. Inara leaving must have quite an event, emotionally and narratively speaking, though canon didn't give it to us --- but inalasahl really does. And it's a thing of complication and pain and necessity, just as it should be. Inara is well-rendered here in all her ambivalence and strength and self-respect; I feel that I know and love her better for having read this story. Added to that, there's exciting plot, good 'verse-voices and dialogue, strong character moments for Simon and Mal, and nicely textured detail-work.
