Rounding out my week of recs featuring RayV is this powerful and moving RayV-centric fic told from the POV of Father Behan, the Vecchio family's priest. Tremendous development of Father Behan's character and brilliant use of his POV to tell us so much about both Ray himself and the Vecchio family (especially fine -- and painful -- details about Frannie and about Angie). This fic intricately weaves together backstory and canon elements and new insights, from Ray's childhood up to his marriage proposal to Stella.

Why this must be read: Because sometimes you just need to read a fic where people are nice to another because they care. Also, what *does* one give the billionaire who has everything?

Bruce held the small jar in his hand, shook some of the powdered ingredients out. He, Pepper, and Mrs. Pynchon regarded them dubiously.

"I haven't even heard of some of these things," said Mrs. Pynchon, "and I do keep up with the literature."

"I don't think you'd know about some of these things without spending time rather far up in the Andes Mountains," said Bruce, dipping his head. "And perhaps in Vietnam. And, uh, Cameroon."

"What is it?" asked Pepper, poking it with her finger.

"It's what I guess they call superfoods in the press, mostly - antioxidants, a number of things to improve liver function, since no matter what he says he has a chunk of metal that lives in his chest and it must take its toll on his liver and kidneys, some things that I believe protect glial function in the brain -"

Both of them stared at Bruce and he stopped talking. "Sorry."

"I'm interested," said Mrs. Pynchon.

"Well, and a couple of things to boost respiratory function, given that he is essentially a plane." He jiggled the powder. "I'll show you how to make up the mix; you only pulverize enough to provide him with a tablespoon or two a day. And puree it with some sprouted, live seeds we're growing in there." He wiggled his elbow at some adjoining door.

"And you're going to get this into Tony how?" asked Pepper.

My SPN OTP is Wincest, which actually turns out to be quite the perfect pairing for daemon fusions. Authors can have the emotional intensity of them touching each other's daemon without showing incestuous sex--in essence getting the best of both worlds. Showcasing how Sam and Dean's daemons interact also allows fans to delve into the more complex layers of their relationship while still having Sam and Dean act completely in character.

Summary: It feels familiar, the soul of the town. Acuqileena agrees, pecking him on the ear as she lands back on his shoulder, claws sharp through his jacket. "It was a long time ago," she whispers, "before I flew often."

Why this must be read: Oxoniensis has a talent for getting right to the heart of the characters in every fandom she writes. It feels like you're reading an episode, that's how good the characterization is. This fic uses the prevalence of witches in HDM and SPN as the basis for an episodic case. Since this fic was written mid-s3, it feels like an older story when Sam and Dean investigated strange occurences. Don't expect any angels or demons in this one.

Without giving too much away, the plot mirrors most of SPN's core pathos: creature in a small town, Sam and Dean uncover the mystery as they learn about each other and themselves, the ending is merely a stepping stone in their journey. Sam's daemon is spot-on, a subtle comment on his desire to be free and his eventual acceptance of life as a hunter. Dean is perfect in his focus on protecting Sam at all costs. Yes, this is Wincest, but I should note the sex happens off-screen. What we see amounts to a little kissing and some wing-petting. I feel like non-Wincest fans could enjoy this one, too.

If you're looking for a fic that brings you back to the golden old days of season 1 and 2, with a healthy mixture of the bizarre presented in the way only Supernatural can, this fic is for you!

a lie the size of the sky

In commemorating the final year of  paperlegends I plan on reccing several fics written last year for that particular challenge that I loved over the course of this month, starting with the fic that made me a casual watcher of the show into a fan (of the fandom at least).  What I end up reccing barely scratches the surface of the amazing number of stories written for that challenge and I hope you get a chance and go take a look at the great stories that have been written for it in the past years.
