07:47 am Failure Is Not An Option (Sometimes It's An Inevitability) by chaletian (Teen, PG)
There are so many truly excellent Avengers stories that it's been both a challenge and a delight to be able to share a few of my favourites with you. A couple more to end off the month before the helicarrier takes off for parts unknown.

Fandom: THE AVENGERS (movieverse)
Pairing: Gen (background Tony/Steve, Phil/Clint)
Length: ~ 1420 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] chaletian
Author Website: on AO3; The Fan Fictional Efforts of La Squeen
Why this must be read: I tend to like long stories I can really sink my teeth into. But sometimes a short story comes along that has just the right amount of everything. Chaletian's fic has the Avengers dealing with a natural disaster (with added human complications) in a South American mining community. What I love about the story is how human everyone is. The Avengers can battle gods and monsters, travel between dimensions, save the world, but they can't save everyone in every situation no matter how much they want to or how hard they try. This is the team dealing (together and individually) with failure. It hurts, but it shows the humanity in the characters, which is really why we like and care about them so much.

'I can’t decide if Stark is a genius or our ultimate nemesis waiting to blossom forth,' says Bruce, as he and Natasha walk back to their respective rooms. )

08:41 am Catch Your Voice by lavvyan (Teen)
Fandom: THE AVENGERS (movieverse)
Pairing: Clint Barton/Phil Coulson
Length: ~ 14,178 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] lavvyan
Author Website: on AO3; Fic Index Part 1; Fic Index Part 2
Why this must be read: If you've read my writing, you'll know I've got a thing for Clint falling for Coulson's voice and his personality before he ever meets him. There's just something about forging a bond over a headset that has a certain romantic appeal, and it works really well with what we get to see of them in canon. (Remember, the only actual scene we have with Barton and Coulson they're speaking via headset/radio comm in Thor).

The story follows the progress of Clint and Coulson's relationship from voice on the line to beyond the end of the movie. It's a lovely slow flirtatious build and it's delightful watching Clint go a little stupid over someone he's never even met. The story isn't all sunshine and happiness - there are challenges and obstacles and moments when you think "what? no! That's not how it's supposed to go!" but it's all worth it in the end. Every single word of it. You'll smile and your heart will ache momentarily, but you'll never regret the time you spend reading this story.

'JARVIS, can you… imitate another person's voice?' 'If I have records of that person's speech patterns, certainly.' )

12:39 pm "Somewhere between a beginning, a middle and an end" by Amodelofefficiency (T)
Fandom: THE LIZZIE BENNET DIARIES
Pairing: Lizzie Bennet/William Darcy
Length: ~24K words
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author Website: AO3
Why this must be read: This fic can best be described as "cozy"--warm and loving and composed of a string of soft, quiet moments between everyone's favorite pairing. Lizzie and Darcy are wonderfully in-character as they get to know each other better, and the results are just beautiful.

And even then – after the videos and the fights and the confessions and the realisation that she doesn’t dislike him; (a secret - she loves him) – even after all of that, she still doesn't really understand how he loves her. )

12:59 pm "your name is the splinter inside me" by abvj (G)
Well, this is the end of my month of LBD recs. If you haven't discovered this fandom, get thee to it! If you already have, hope you enjoyed, and I'll see you next month with a smattering of Doctor Who entries!

Fandom: THE LIZZIE BENNET DIARIES
Pairing: Lizzie Bennet/William Darcy
Length: 2005 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] abvj
Author Website: Master list
Why this must be read: In this one-shot, Lizzie considers her understanding of Darcy and how their relationship is evolving. It's canon-compliant and memorable, and nicely understated in its look at one person's reflections.

It’s NPR, which is also so perfectly Darcy in a way Lizzie can’t really explain, but finds almost endearing. )

05:27 pm Psychomanteum by Glitterstim (R)
Fandom: STAR WARS
Pairing: Obi-Wan/OC, Obi-Wan/Anakin pre-slash.
Length: ~1800 words
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author Website: Dreamwidth fics
Why this must be read:

This author has a talent that I respect, rare and to my taste: dark with swirls of humor, like strings of condensed milk in espresso. Some really good stories are on the 'author website' link, more have been read by me circa 2008-2009 and then taken down by the author; I should very much like to reread them. If anyone knows where they are online, please PM. As for this story, explaining the title would give away a great deal of the plot, and you are not going to believe who the OC is.

11:37 pm "Anticipation" by Arrow, aka Esteefee (PG)
Fandom: DUE SOUTH
Pairings: Fraser/Kowalski
Length: ~700 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] arrow00
Author Website: Arrow on Ao3
Why this must be read: This is a Diefenbaker point-of-view fic centered on Dief's love of donuts and by extension his appreciation of Ray, the provider of those wondrous things.  Arrow has written a funny, clever Dief-voice, a fun look inside his not-wolf way of seeing things (I recognize my own dog at several points).  Even though it's short, there are really poignant mentions of Dief and Fraser's history.  Dief's partial deafness is taken into account and done well.  Bonus: [livejournal.com profile] kalakirya has recorded a very nice podfic of the story, which Arrow links to on the story post.

It's up there. Dief knows it's up there because a long time ago (feels like long time—it was in the time after lunch but before now, which is not-lunch and not-dinner) Ray-brother put it up there after they went Outside to the place where they hunt food.

Anticipation

Happy May from your new due South [livejournal.com profile] crack_van driver.
