Fandom: FRINGE
Character: Astrid Farnsworth
Length: 885 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] musesfool
Author Website: on Ao3
Why this must be read:

It is always good to see more Astrid fic because there was only so much we got to see of her onscreen and here we have a lovely expansion of Astrid coming from a passing canon reference. With such a simple theme it shows a surprising amount of who Astrid is - it neatly ties into not only her family background, her growing up, her scientific interest but also into how she copes with the madness of her job. The piece is short but an all round joy to read (and the recipe mentioned in the fic, linked to in the authors end note, sounds delicious too)

01:47 pm "Ossia and Encore to the Square Root of Three" by savvyliterate (M)
Fandom: Doctor Who
Pairing: River Song/The Doctor, Amy Pond/Rory Williams
Length: 16,413 words
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author Website: Namesake
Why this must be read: One of the frustrations of "The Power of Three" was that we were supposed to believe the Doctor had more or less hung around the Ponds' house for a year without once seeing River--and from Amy's point of view, no less. This clever and emotional take on the "Year of the Slow Invasion" not only fixes that issue--it also takes the idea of "fixing" to a whole new level. Bonus points for the short and sweet epilogue, lovely characterizations, crackling dialogue, and a much-needed dose of heat.

Even though he married our daughter, he never stood still long enough to become part of our real lives. Come to think of it, neither did she. As much as Mels was a constant presence in my life until I was 22, in the 10 years after that, River breezed in and out as much as the Doctor did. )

Fandom: NARUTO
Pairing: Naruto/Sasuke
Length: 3 chapters, 25,255 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] phoenix_down7
Author Website: [livejournal.com profile] phoenix_down7
Why this must be read: Naruto likes Sakura-chan, Sakura-chan likes Sasuke, and Sasuke drives Naruto crazy because he's just so damn perfect. All the classic dynamics, with a little shippy twist! Sometimes a fic is simply satisfying, and that's the best way to describe this one. It's a high school AU that works, everyone is recognizable as their canon selves--even without the ninja jutsu--and the story has a very happy ending. Yay! NSFW due to graphic sex. Spoilers here, for those extra-careful about potential triggers: There is a bout of drunk sex, but it is mutually wanted. [HS AU with everyone around 17 years old, no canon spoilers]

Fandom: HOCKEY RPF
Pairing: Patrick Kane/Jonathan Toews
Length: 6700
Author on LJ [livejournal.com profile] rsadelle
Author Website: on AO3
Why this must be read:

I make no apologies for my love of Kane and Toews; they are awesome and some of the greatest fic in this fandom features them. However, I'll try to keep this pairing to a minimum, because there is a lot of juicy goodness out there in other pairings.

This story is my go-to for a feel-good fix. It has the perfect mixture of humor, romance, and sensuality.

The Blackhawks start haunting gay bars. Do I need to go on? Okay, well then. As I said, I love me some Kaner and Tazer, but I like them best in the context of the rest of the team. Jonathan pretends to be Kaner's boyfriend and things escalate from there while the rest of the 'Hawks look on in disbelief. Also includes Abby Sharp being awesome and a cameo from TJ Oshie.

11:53 pm Thus Spake Zarathustra by Dawnwind (general audiences)
Hello everyone!  I'm Anachron, and I'm driving the crack van for May.  I'm terribly excited to be driving this month, because despite the fact that there have been so many wonderful Starsky and Hutch stories on the van, some of my all-time favorites are still out there, unrecced!  This month I hope to cover a variety of wonderful S&H works.  So here we go!

Fandom:   STARSKY & HUTCH
Pairing:    none
Length:    3781 words
Author on LJ:   dawnebeth
Author Website:   Dawnwind on AO3

Why this must be read: First up is one of my favorite stories by one of my favorite writers, Dawnwind.  Recently Dawn wrote, "I can't help myself, I'm programmed to write hurt Starsky."  A very good thing for all of us, because she does it incredibly well.  Not only does she do a wonderful hurt Starsky, she also writes a great comforting Hutch to help his partner out -- and Dawn's medical background makes her hurt/comfort scenes particularly convincing. Thus Spake Zarathustra has all of the above, as well as some exceptionally clever writing -- resulting in a very entertaining, and at times very tense, read.  I hope you enjoy it.
