04:08 am Haven by jat sapphire (NC-17)
Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH
Pairing: Starsky/Hutch
Length: about 3000 words
Author on LJ: jat_sapphire
Author’s website:  jat sapphire’s website content has been preserved here. Some of her works also appear at starskyhutcharchives.com.
Why this must be read: Because jat sapphire’s writing is beautiful and evocative.  And hot.  She’s been recced on Crack Van probably more than any other S&H author, but only a few of those recs are relatively recent, and most of the links – to her website on the now-defunct GeoCities and to stories on the Me and Thee Archive – no longer work.  Fortunately, the content of jat sapphire’s website is still accessible online, thanks to the efforts of ReoCities.

Haven is one of the stories which has been recced on Crack Van before – by KimberlyFDR nearly ten years ago (!), but because the GeoCities link is no longer functional, potential readers may be dissuaded from tracking the story down.  It shouldn't be missed, though, as it has some of the most beautiful imagery I've come across in fanfiction.

Starsk had no idea how beautiful he looked sometimes. Oh, yes, the man's ego was bigger than his car, and he moved like he owned the world; the edge of his confidence would cut through other people's money and power and rank as if they were nothing at all. But he'd never know how the match and the candle gilded him, how the globe of light held his chin and throat and upper chest, hand and wrist and forearm, in a chiaroscuro moment that burned into Hutch's memory. The dent in his cheek as the wick caught, the movement of his lips, was like a painting moving, a statue bleeding – a miracle.

The boy-saint icon turned toward Hutch, came to embrace him, and was abruptly Starsky again.

09:57 am the reeducation of tyler brown by cathedralhearts (Explicit)
Fandom: HOCKEY RPF
Pairing: Tyler Brown/Tyler Seguin
Length: 44K
Author on LJ unknown
Author Website: on AO3
Why this must be read:

No matter how much we love watching these guys on the ice, the time inevitably comes when they have to give up playing hockey forever. The saddest stories are those players who can't overcome injuries and are forced out against their will. Other players bow to age (unless their names rhyme with Yaromeer Yawger or something like that) and have a bittersweet last home game.

Is it better to burn out or to fade away?

This story is about a player who never broke into the NHL, although he was signed for many years by the Philadelphia Flyers. Tyler Brown retires at age 23, not due to injury but due to lack of will to continue pounding against the door to the NHL that remains closed to him. So what does a guy do when he has never done anything his entire life except play hockey?

First, he falls in love with his best friend, and then second, he goes to college. Along the way, he learns to deal with letting go of hockey, living with a millionaire boyfriend without losing either his pride or dignity, and forging a new life for himself. This is ultimately a hopeful fic about the reality of the lifespan of a hockey career.

12:22 pm The Fire by Francesca (Explicit - with Adult Themes)
Fandom: THE SENTINEL
Pairing: Jim Ellison/Blair Sandburg
Length: 14,937 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] cesperanza

Author’s website: http://archiveofourown.org/users/Speranza/

Why this must be read: No excuses from me for another rec of Francesca’s work, but this story is far, far away in character from my first rec. Please don’t be put off by the realisation that it involves Jim and an underage boy. I almost failed to read on account of that (being one of my no-go areas) but was so pleased I stayed with it, because that element isn’t what you think it is. In fact, it’s not even what Jim thinks it is!
Not only is the writing, as usual, so perfect and atmospheric – Francesca conjures up another time, place and culture effortlessly: you can feel the heat and the dust -  but Jim and Blair are such fantastic characterisations here. I particularly like this Bair – an excellent cop, but still with that enormous depth of compassion and the guts to fight, and win, for what he believes to be right. Jim here, though, is a wonderful interpretation, a man tortured by a past he has tried so hard to escape and full of despair of what he thinks he might be. The premise of the story is quite, quite, believable, as are the reactions of both men to their inescapable fate as Sentinel and Guide. And it’s worth reading alone for Blair’s meltdown in the loft, at first hilarious, and then extremely moving.

02:12 pm Full Circle by Merentha13 (NC-17)

Fandom: THE PROFESSIONALS
Pairing: Bodie/Doyle
Length: 18,700 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] merentha13
Author Website: On AO3
Why this must be read: It's time for me to offer up a longer story for you to get your teeth into.

Self-pimping on the van is the height of bad manners, so I'd better start by admitting I'm not entirely a neutral bystander here. I was lucky enough to be Merentha13's artist for Full Circle, a story written for the CI5 Box of Tricks Big Bang in 2012... but this is a story I love and desperately want to rec to you. So kindly avert your eyes from any manky old artwork, and concentrate on Merentha's beautifully constructed and plotty story, wherein Doyle leaves CI5 after an operation goes horribly wrong, and returns to police work; then during an undercover assignment, he and Bodie are thrown back together and forced to work as a team again.

Now that sounds pretty simple and straight forward, but Merentha populates her stories with well-rounded OCs, twists of plot, moral complications and bursts of action that keep you engaged from the start to the finish. I imagine Merentha as rolling up her sleeves and wading straight into her story, knowing exactly where she's going and how to get there. She writes with a confidence and ease that shines through, and leaves you free to sit back and enjoy the ride.

Fandom: PERSON OF INTEREST
Pairing: none; Leon Tao, John Reese
Length: 3000+ words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] livenudebigfoot
Author Website: AO3 profile
Why this must be read: I really wanted to rec a multi-chapter fic by this author, but it's not going to be done before the end of the month. But that works out well for Leon Tao. This fic captures his voice fantastically well and the story itself turns from scary to humorous in a hugely entertaining way.

08:40 pm Twice at Dawn by coincident (PG-13)
Fandom: NARUTO
Pairing: Rin/Obito, Itachi/Shisui
Length: one-shot at 12,316 words
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: FF.net profile
Why this must be read: This fic takes the idea of the all-important Uchiha oniisan and uses it to weave a great coming of age story. Obito doesn't die here, and instead is the big brother figure for Shisui, who in turn is the big-brother figure for Itachi. Told from Obito's POV, we watch Shisui and Itachi's genius develop in the wake of Obito's Uchiha-deemed failures. Obito watching his cousins' development is both amusing and sad, particularly the lead-up to and demise of the Uchiha clan. All is told with the author's masterful way with words, walking that fine line between beautiful and purple prose with grace. Warning: incest [AU from the beginning of canon, spoilers for the big Itachi versus Sasuke confrontation]

Fandom: FRINGE
Characters/Pairings: Alternate Olivia Dunham, Alternate John Scott, Alternate Olivia Dunham/Alternate Frank Stanton
Length: 4827 words
Author on DreamWidth: elfin
Author Website: on Ao3
Why this must be read:

Because Alternate John Scott fics are exceedingly rare and apart from that this has a great mix of backstory detailing for alt!Olivia, as well as on how alt!Olivia/alt!John didn't work out in the redverse. Add in the friendship angle for them despite that and some enlightening discussion with banter they have and it's a real treat to read.
