07:45 am THE SENTINEL /SUPERNATURAL (Teen)
Title: Apple Pie and Chevrolet by Swellison
Characters/Pairing: Jim Ellison, Blair Sandburg, Dean Winchester; Dean Winchester/OFC
Length: 16K words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] swellison
Author Website: at Idol Pursuits and at AO3

Why this must be read: Because sometimes a sentinel deserves to have some fun with his senses, and a demon chaser deserves a day off.

It’s several years past the show’s end and Blair’s a cop. He and Jim have settled in a comfortable relationship on and off the job. Just before the holiday season, Jim’s aunt calls to ask if they would like to attend an apple festival held in her small town. She’s hoping to persuade Jim to be one of the judges for the apple pie contest.

In the meantime, Dean Winchester is on the hunt. It’s two years after Sam has given up the family business and gone to Stanford, so Dean is alone in his quest. After completing his graveyard task, he’s on the road again but stops to help a young woman with car trouble. It turns out she’s from the same little town as Jim’s Aunt Helen. They hit it off and she, coincidentally, asks Dean if he’d be willing to be an apple pie judge at the festival.

This was written for the Moonridge Auction and also for the 2011 Big Bang challenge, so it has some lovely artwork as a bonus for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy.

11:13 am Sherlock Holmes (Sherlock BBC) / Pushing Daisies (PG-13)
Title: The Case of the Rolling Wheel and the Long Road by fresne
Pairing: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson, Charlotte Charles/Ned
Author on LJ:
Author Website: Ao3
Why this must be read:
Ch1: The facts were these, when Sherlock Holmes was thirty years, four months, twenty-nine days, five hours and thirty-six minutes old, he fell over a waterfall. However, despite his considerable experience in the matter, he found that sometimes death has a grace period.
Ch2: In which there is some explanation as to what happens when the Blackbird sang - no noses removed
Ch3: Some notes
Ch4: In which there are further explanations as to why the denizens of the Pie Hole are in England. Plus adventure. Plus singing.

Victorian-era Holmes becomes modern day BBC-era Sherlock through Pushing Daisies magic. And history keeps repeating itself around Sherlock Holmes and he keeps finding replacements for the characters in his life. Partly, the cyclical nature of Sherlock finding his archetypes seems to be simply because the positions need to be be filled. (With various incarnations of Moriartys and Watsons- possibly from different Sherlock Holmes adaptions). Then, come to the modern day, and the bakers and detectives from the Pie Hole (along with their narrator) come to work with Sherlock for a case.

Why this must be read: Can 'asdfghjkl;' be an acceptable response as to why this fic must be read? I love this fic, I've read it so many times.

Starting from Season 3, Spencer Smith takes the place of Martha and goes on an adventure with The Doctor instead. The entire Season 3 is re-done, 13 stories along with 5 intermissions and an epilogue.

What I thought was interesting about this series was the writer actually gave us an insight into the aftermath of The Doctor's actions and how it affects 'the companion'. Be ready for some angst my fellow readers! :D

11:57 am Supernatural / The Matrix (PG-13)
Title: Residual Self-Image by Architeuthis

Why this must be read:
Heaven is the Matrix.

I tend to find it amazing when writers can pack so much world building into such a short amount of words. And this certainly managed that. It’s such a great mash up of not only 2 different properties, but uses the different Supernatural words to great effect. Chitaqua and a certain high rise office work fantastically as Matrix setting parallels. Castiel is a rogue program inhabiting a (living) avatar, working with humans (and possibly other rogue programs) against the machine that is heaven. They are in search for The One.

Length: 10,700

Why this must be read: This is one of my favorite fics ever because not only do we get to see how Mike and Ray's relationship works between them but we also get to see it work with others. For example I *love* how Ray and Sadie get along and that it is mentioned that it would be harder for Mike and Ray if Ray didn't get along with his kids. In this fic there are so many little details from both shows that the author weaves together so wonderfully to make it plausible that they are actually one show.

08:50 pm 1940 Lithuania by Servant of Anubis (Mature)
Fandom: HETALIA
Pairing: Russia/Lithuania
Length: 82,541
Author Website: http://www.fanfiction.net/u/466473/Servant-of-Anubis
Why this must be read:

Author's Summary: Subjugate. Verb.: to bring under complete control or subjection; conquer; master. To make submissive or subservient. What happened to Lithuania and Poland in 1940 and '41 .

It seems all my recs are not easy reads. Perhaps that is a good thing since the anime IS crack humor, yet people see the potential there for something dark (which I love).

Hands down, Russia is my favorite Hetalia character, and because of this I am very picky about how he is characterized in fanfics. He is absolutely nuts. Really. This fic did him justice because it touches on his insanity, his vulnerabilities, and his calculative brutality through the eyes of one of his victims: Lithuania. What, in my opinion, made this fic shine high above others was POLAND. It is a big thing when a writer manages to make a character you know little about (and what you know doesn't impress you much) make you pump your fist in the air at his triumphs and cry at his fall.

This fic is a whole lot of feels.

09:09 pm HETALIA/CAPTAIN AMERICA (Teen)
Title: 5 Times Captain America Met His Country Gecko Osco
Pairing: America/England, Captain America/Peggy
Length: 9,299
Author Website: Fanfiction.net
Why this must be read:

Author's Summary: Steve Rogers, otherwise known as Captain America, is trying to adjust to living in the 21st century. This is further complicated by finding out nations exist as living beings and America is a bit of a fan-boy regarding him.

I don't like Captain America. However, I Love America and was intrigued by the possibility of this fic. I LOVED THIS FIC.

Out of all the countries represented in Hetalia, America downright makes me laugh because of him being so...American. America made me laugh in this fic because OF COURSE he would be a fan of Captain America. The interactions were hilarious and a bit poignant and leaves you smiling in the end. I also feel that a writer is successful when they make you feel for characters you don't care too much about. This was accomplished brilliantly.

Title: Fairground Attractions by Kitty Fisher
Pairing: Bodie/Don DeMarco
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] kittyfisher
Author Website: Kitty Fisher on A03 or on the Circuit Archive or at the Hatstand
Why this must be read: I'm not usually mad keen on Pros crossovers where either Bodie or Doyle isn't involved - I'm never sure how that's a Pros story to start with, because to me Pros is eternally both our lads. There are just a few authors who can lead me into a story anyway though, and it's probably no surprise that Kitty Fisher is one of them. Fairground Attractions takes place in the weeks between Bodie's return to England and his joining CI5. With time to kill, he takes himself on holiday to the seaside, and finds himself wandering through the funfair, pausing for a burger, idly watching the dodgems whilst he eats - and catches sight of:

Excerpt )

It's Don DeMarco, of course, the fairground gypsy from Ladder of Swords, a wilder and more windswept version of Doyle, who Bodie's not yet met. That should bother me - it's Doyle for Bodie - but in Kitty Fisher's capable hands it doesn't, it just proves to me yet again that Bodie has very good taste in men... *g* And of course, being by Kitty Fisher, it's not only a cracking read, but Bodie is Bodie, Don DeMarco is himself, and the sex is hot... *vbg*

The bad news is that this story isn't online (though Kitty Fisher is at A03, so we can perhaps be hopeful), but the good news is that it's available as part of Unprofessional Conduct 2, one of the Gryphon Press zines, which means that you're all but guaranteed Prosfic-y value for money - Details for Gryphon Press contact here.
