03:12 am Subliminal by Speranza (Teen and Up)
Fandom: Sherlock Holmes
Pairing:Sherlock Holmes/John Watson
Length: 2,591
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] cesperanza
Author Website: Speranza at A03, main fanfic site and tumblr
Summary: It's as if he's got a loaded gun lying about.

Why this must be read: Author shows just how well you can mix an original style and case into a fast paced short fic: the mystery of a playwright fearing assassination is deduced and resolved without Sherlock leaving the consulting room.  Best parts are how Sherlocks' observations are incorporated into the storytelling, plus the subtle laughs at pretentious artists.

Note on formatting/slash: There are numbers for notes throughout the fic, each note offers a glimpse of Sherlock POV.Read more... )

09:48 am mine eyes have seen the glory by paxlux (R)
Fandom: INCEPTION
Pairing: Arthur/Eames
Length: 10497

Why this must be read:
The nights are long in Arkham because not everyone sleeps, it’s not like insanity has a timetable.

I felt conflicted about this rec for half a second, but I love it too much not to share. It’s a Batman AU taking place in Arkham Asylum. It’s a fic where the asylum for the dangerously criminally insane are housed by familiar (Batman’s villains) faces, and Arthur (with his own dark past) is on staff. Arthur finds himself becoming fascinated and obsessed with the sometimes charming, sometimes incredibly dangerous multiple-personality-disorder having Eames. It’s how a city like Gotham sinks its dark hooks into everything and pervades every nook and cranny until all things dark, twisted, and insane becomes appealing and fascinating. (Written before The Dark Knight Rises, so the characters aren’t actually standins for Bane/ Blake)

09:49 am The Butterfingers G. D. I. Stark Guide to Problem Solving by Epiphanyx7 (pg-13)
Fandom: AVENGERS
Pairing: Gen
Length: 18956
Author on LJ:
Author Website: Ao3
Why this must be read:
Tony begins to notice that things are going missing from his workshop... and discovers that his bots have been hiding a very, very big secret from him. Or rather, a very, very small one. In which Dummy is a kleptomaniac, You is painfully shy, Butterfingers is a programming genius, JARVIS is a sarcastic sonofabitch, Pepper takes care of Tony outside of the workshop, Bruce is Tony's boo, Thor is Tony's favourite, Clint is actually kind of smart, Steve has terrible timing, and problem-solving is never simple or easy.

Tony Stark’s robots are Tony Stark’s children, and there should be more robots around. This is a fic in which the bots are adorable, Tony learns to be a parent, and the rest of the Avengers learn how to deal with Tony’s children. Also, Dummy, Butterfingers, and U take independent action to find ways to take care of Tony, and adorableness ensues.

Why this must be read:

Author's Summary : A young man must take a dark and twisted path to save everything he loves.

JINTO

Everyone remember that bright and energetic boy from the pilot of SGA, that young kid who was so in awe of Shepperd and wanted to learn everything he could about these new friends from Altantis? Well, in this very dark and sorrowful postulation of his ultimate fate, life isn't so innocent or bright anymore. Experimented on by Michael, Jinto is created into something not quite human. He's constantly driven from world to world, trying to find the succor and help that he can never have. By the end, he finds his own way to express his defiance. But it's a very sad and painful journey for our young friend. The author brings to life a character that is in a lot of pain but who will fight to the bitter end the only way he knows how. You'll want to weep for poor Jinto by the end at the same time as you cheer for him.

08:47 pm DILF - twentysomething (NC-17)
Fandom: TEEN WOLF
Pairing: Stiles/Derek
Length: 30871 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] twsomething
Author Website: AO3
Summary: Today is Scott's first day of kindergarten and Derek is terrified.

Why this must be read: DILF is one of the defining fics in Teen Wolf fandom, imo, so much so that I was seriously surprised to see nobody has recced it here before. Thankfully, that's changed now.

It's hard to put my finger on exactly why DILF is so delightful. Excellent characterisation? Originality of casting Scott and Jackson as Derek's kids but still retaining their unique personality? Lightheartedness? Slow build romance? I don't know, but this fic has all of those things. And it's funny to boot. It's not a complicated storyline, but it's fleshed out and really well-written. Plus as an AU it reads perfectly without knowing anything about canon (I know this, because that's how I read it), but at the same time it's filled with winks and nudges to the show.

It's one of my favourite stories, always makes me laugh with the funnies and the cute, so if you haven't read it yet: get thee hence! In fact, I think I might too. It feels like a reread-DILF kinda night.

Derek goes to work because going home would just be depressing without Scott running all over the house, screaming at the top of his lungs that he wanted to play aliens and ninjas. )

10:03 pm The Longest Distance by Berty (Explicit)
Fandom: DUE SOUTH
Pairing: Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski
Length: 9000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] bertybertle
Author Website: On the AO3
Why this must be read: It's an apocalypse story that's not exactly bleak, but it still packs a hell of an emotional punch.  It borrows the premise of Last Night (and so comes with a warning for impending major character death), and it has a very similar feel to that film, a sort of understated, claustrophobic feeling, while people continue being painfully, normally just people as time runs out.    It's a story about Ray spending the last days getting to Fraser, so they can come to terms with each other before the end, and it's about being together when that end comes.  It's not an easy story or a happy story, but it never feels hopeless.

11:58 pm The Fix [fanart] by Anachron (G)

Fandom: Starsky and Hutch
Pairing: none
Length: N/A
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] anachron
Author Website: Anachron's 'art' tag on LJ
Why this must be seen:

There is just something so compelling about a drawing based on a well-known canon moment. While we might be very familiar with the scene as the camera had captured it, a talented artist gives us something more. They can focus in on specific details, evoking mood and emotion by what they choose to emphasize or de-emphasize. They make us see their vision. This stunning work does exactly that: In the famous alleyway scene, Anachron captures Hutch's pain and vulnerability and Starsky's intense concern and distress. Starsky touches Hutch, their eyes meet, and you feel the strength of their connection being called upon to pull them both through. Gorgeous.
