12:22 pm The Wolves Of Cascade by Morgan Briarwood (adult)
I have a few extra days posting access so while November was all about old favourites I'm glad of the chance to rec some new stories. It's great that we not only have ten solid years of Crack Van recs to look back on but we still have wonderful new stories being written for The Sentinel.

Fandom: The Sentinel
Pairing: Jim/Blair
Length: novel length
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] briarwood
Author's Website: At AO3
Why this must be read: This excellent cyberpunk novel was written for this year's [livejournal.com profile] sentinelbigbang. Set in a very different, future Cascade, Jim is a sentinel looking for cybernetic modifications to control his senses and Blair is a cybernetic surgeon entangled in the underground world of the criminal "Wolfpack gang". Morgan has created a very detailed, believable world with lots of intriguing sci-fi ideas. The story is full of drama and action and is an enthralling read. A treat for us sentinel fans but I also think it could be read and enjoyed as an original work. The delightful cover art was created by [livejournal.com profile] luna_61

04:45 pm you smiled (and then the spell was cast), by AugustaByron (PG)
Fandom: WELCOME TO NIGHT VALE
Pairing: Cecil/Carlos, past Cecil/Steve Carlsberg
Length: 4,216 words
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: works on AO3
Warnings: Kidfic, child abduction, close brush with death
Notes: Spoilers for “The Phone Call,” “Valentine,” “The Traveler,” “The Whispering Forest,” “Eternal Scouts,” “One Year Later” (eps. 16-18, 22-23, 25)
Why this must be read:

Cecil is a divorced dad who shares custody of his son with his ex, Steve Carlsberg, and Carlos, upon learning this, is forced to re-evaluate the guy that he’d dismissed as a lunatic stalker.

Carlos asks, “Why didn't you tell me you had a son?”

Cecil just looks at him, confused. “Why would I?”

Carlos is at a loss. “Well, because people usually talk about their kids,” he says. He's got a few friends with kids, and they barely talk about anything else. Carlos actually gets sick of it.

“Do they?” Cecil asks, sounding amazed. “Why? The Sheriff's Secret Police will know right where to press if they go around talking about it.” He's using the voice from the radio, the voice he has when he says something simple and ridiculous and profound, something that makes Carlos catch his breath and look up at the sky. Like it's a mystery that has been revealed, and it's Cecil's job to let everyone in on the truth.

Carlos can't fathom what Cecil has said, though, that all the parents are quiet about their children because to do anything else is dangerous. He thinks about the radio, all the things Cecil says, the way that he questioned the wisdom of the hooded figures, and the way he refuses to stop acknowledging the existence of the Dog Park.

And Carlos thinks that if he had a son in Night Vale, he would hide him away as well as he could. Or just shut up and spout the party line.

Cecil is not what Carlos thought he was, that much is becoming clearer.

Since we have posting access til the 6th, I'm going to rec a few more fics before then. Up first is a fic that was just posted today for [livejournal.com profile] merlin_holidays

Fandom: MERLIN
Pairing: Merlin/Arthur Pendragon
Length: 9495
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] destina
Author Website: AO3
Why this must be read:

This fic was such a joy to read from the beautifully captured moments, the quiet intimacy between the characters to the gorgeous setting and vivid descriptions to the wonderful writing.  Merlin's devotion to Arthur is so steadfastly evident, much like canon but it was Arthur's characterization that completely stole my breath.  He was everything I had imagined him to be one day as king.  Each one of his interactions with Merlin revealed a little bit more about him.   If there could be a perfect canon winter first time M/A fic this would be definitely be in contention.
