09:18 am Now, That's Different! by Anakin T. Skywalker (K+)
Fandom: STAR WARS
Characters: Anakin, Obi-Wan, OCs
Length: 31649 words
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author Website: FFN Profile
Why this must be read:

It's an odd thing to post this rec, but a good thing, in that December is not usually when anyone can post Star Wars recs due to the fandom being not a Small Fandom -- but this December is not like others and a Christmas story fits today, the Winter Solstice (Summer Solstice to the South Hemisphereans, Merry Christmas to you down there!). There is a popular genre, too, of 'Jedi visit Earth,' and for a cute story with serious undertones, I enjoyed this one a bunch. Anakin gets a differing perspective on his life in the GFFA during his stint in wintry earth times. It can't help but change him. The author wrote a WIP sequel, too.

Fandom: HOCKEY RPF
Pairing: Tyler Seguin/Patrick Kane
Length: 4524 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] unperfectwolf
Author Website: Fic on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] rememberbefore/Author page on AO3
Why this must be read:
The lockout fic was the one thing about the lockout that made me happy last year, and it brought stories for this pairing (because Kane and Seguin played together in Switzerland), which I really dig. I love a happy story that's got lots of character-specific detail.

01:51 pm "The Eye of Odin" by AndromedaStarr (T)
Fandoms: UNCHARTED
Characters/Pairings: Victor Sullivan/Original Female Character, Nathan Drake/Elena Fisher
Length: ~24000 words
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: on FanFiction.net
Why this must be read:

There are a lot of multi-chaptered adventure fics out there in the sea of Uncharted fics, or I should say, lots of them that are started but not an awful lot get finished as it is all too common to find a chapter or two of a promising story that never truly went anywhere.

I picked this one to rec because not only is it finished, but it is well enough plotted and making good use of mythology to feel in the same vein as the games. That is especially true because things never go quite to plan in this either. It also has much more of a Sully focus which I liked seeing. In this Sully gets much more page time than in most fics and perhaps even more than in some of the games too - he's pretty in on the action, plus has a love interest who is also a fairly fun additional character to their team on the adventure.

07:16 pm Reversal by turtle ducklings [PG]
Fandom: THE HUNGER GAMES
Pairing: Katniss Everdeen/Peeta Mellark (Everlark)
Length: 1911 words
Author on LJ: N/A
Author Website: Author  on FFN
Why this must be read: Post-Mockingjay and told in reverse, this story of Katniss and Peeta's lives is peppered with lines that are absolutely heartbreaking. The word selection is so clean and there's nothing in this fic that doesn't serve a purpose, to tell a story about trust, love and hope.

09:03 pm A World to Save by Geb (R)
Fandom: THE X-FILES
Pairing: Fox Mulder/Dana Scully
Length: 8,000 words
Author on LJ: n/a
Author Website: Author's Page at Gossamer
Why this must be read: Since "Flightless" was already recced here, I decided I should give Geb's "A World to Save" a try. I am so glad that I did. This is one of the best post-col stories I have ever read in this fandom. Her Scully is strong, brave and pragmatic, fighting to save her son, fighting to save her world. Geb's world-building makes sense of the wacky TXF canon, the brief glimpses of Mulder and Scully's relationship feel right and true, the ending is not without hope. The version posted at Gossamer has formatting issues so I've archived it at Fugues.

If you must have Mulder and Scully's son carry the name of William, be warned--he doesn't. This story was written in 1998. It's amazing how much Geb anticipated canon. And improved on it.

11:03 pm The Queen Sent Messengers by sallyislike (Teen)
Fandom: Fairy Tales: Rumpelstiltskin
Pairing/Characters: The Queen, Rumpelstiltskin, OMC, M/M
Length: 2K words
Author Website: at AO3

Why this must be read: It's a terrific twist on the tale, told from an unusual POV: one of the Queen's messengers who has been sent out to try to discover Rumpelstiltskin's name. As he reports his progress, we also learn that he and the Queen have a history, and something more. A very intriguing, moody piece. Enjoy.
