Title: We Seek Only to Answer
Pairing: Ned/Chuck, but basically gen
Length: 5600
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] black_eyedgirl
Author Website: fic tag at LJ
Why this must be read:

I know we're only supposed to rec one crossover per month, but considering that neither I nor anyone else will ever get another chance at it, I simply couldn't resist sharing this gem. (Also, I only discovered it in the past week.) The scientists in Eureka attempt to explain Ned's ability. This fic clashes the fairy tale logic of Ned's magic finger with a colder reality, and raises some interesting questions in the process. On top of that, we get great character voices all around, and an excellent blending of the two shows' tones.

Fandom: SUITS
Pairing: Harvey/Mike
Length: 2053
Author on LJ: not that I know of
Author Website: AO3

Why this must be read: A futurefic: Mike's a junior partner, but it's not as straightforward as it seems. This fic could easily be a plot for Suits, even without Mike/Harvey.

“Harvey!”

What, Mike?” And then he finally looked up and saw Mike, and the way his eyes widened ever so slightly told Mike everything he needed to know about exactly how manic he looked right now.

“I made partner,” he blurted. And, okay, he had definitely meant to drag that out a bit more, milk the suspense for all it was worth - which was a hell of a lot, and damn what an opportunity to miss - but it was out now, so he’d better roll with it. “Partner! After three years, that’s--”

“As fast as me,” Harvey finished, an honest smile starting to bloom on his face, and Mike felt like the sun was rising even though the city was still dim through the windows. “Good work, rookie.”

Fandom: Fairy Tales: Beauty and the Beast, Rapunzel (Disney versions), mention of others
Pairing/Characters: F/F, M/M, F/M; Belle, Rapunzel, other canon characters, see tags
Length: 3175 words
Author Website: at AO3

Why this must be read: I really like "five things" fic; it's like getting multiple stories and a reset button all wrapped up together. Written for Yuletide 2013, we see Belle as the protagonist running into Rapunzel in different places and situations, all of them charming. Enjoy.

Fandoms: UNCHARTED
Characters/Pairings: Elena Fisher, Chloe Frazer, Original Characters, background Nathan Drake/Elena Fisher
Length: 7985 words
Author on LJ: starshone_storm & unknown
Author Website: Caryl/Starshone on Ao3 & Rhiannon87 on Ao3
Why this must be read:

It's rare for Uncharted fics to pass the Bechdel test. To be fair I don't believe the games do either necessarily - there's not a lot of female characters in the source, though the fact there's not tonnes of characters full stop with spoken lines in the games is certainly part of that, combined with almost everything centering around Nathan Drake. I would have thought the fandom might manage to do better and it does on occasion, but it is still all very Drake centric.

So, this fic with Elena and Chloe teaming up and using both their respective sets of talents feels like striking fannish gold. Ignoring how rare it is to get both of them working together, this is an intriguing story, with mystery, action and a touch of humour. It felt atmospheric, set in urban California if I'm not mistaken, making for a nice change of scenery for an Uncharted fic too. For those all about far flung places and treasure hunting then this may not be a fic for you, but if you like your fic scenarios a touch more diverse than the source material does and showing off relationships that get downplayed in canon like with these two ladies then this will probably go down well.

Fandoms: UNCHARTED
Characters/Pairings: Nathan Drake, Victor Sullivan, Nathan Drake/Elena Fisher
Length: 1106 words
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: on Ao3
Why this must be read:

I think all too many people perhaps miss the fact that Nathan Drake is an artist. I don't think it is every said in the game, attention not really drawn to it, but his in-game journal used for puzzle hints primarily is beautifully done and an extra lovely way they insert more character into the game. It being his journal the implication is of course that he sketches down all these mottos and statues and anything that could be helpful that he sees in his travels.

This fic is the first and only fic I've read that actually relates his drawing to him as a character, that talks about how he started, why he continues to, past the obvious usefulness in his profession and as a plot device - which is why I highly recommend this fic for an non-standard view into who Nate is.

Why this must be read:

Now there's nothing wrong with imagining Nate/Elena having wonderful fluffy romantic moments, and I expect there is a large share of those fics hanging about, but this fic and its amusing turning over of that whole traditional idea onto its head was very fun to read. This version of their kind of 'romance' seems pretty fitting with their interactions in UC1, the banter so like the style you could get in game, and made it feel quite plausible a scenario.
