Why this must be read: First-season Steve initially hates Danny's apartment, that much is clear in canon. Naturally, when Danny says he needs to go shopping for a new bed, Steve decides to go along, although it isn't clear if he's there to help or just to drive Danny insane. So, business as usual.

Anyone who has ever roamed an IKEA (for better or worse) will appreciate this fic, and Danny does love to get his rant on. Steve patiently goes along for the ride (and the ridicule) because really, it's in his best interests to make sure his partner is well-rested, and therefore a bed is essential.

But, will an IKEA bed stand up to Steve's, um, "scrutiny"?

Why this must be read: This story and my last rec literally were posted within a few days of each other. That was when I really knew H50 was going to be a solid fandom: when within three days I had two entertaining stories from two writers I'd admired and appreciated in other fandoms. The fandom really has a lot of terrific writers.

Stillane's story has Danny's parents coming to visit the island, and although Danny knows his parents will get to meet the crazy team he's been hanging out with, he doesn't give it a lot of thought. But Steve does. Steve dresses up. Steve puts on a tie (and to Danny's horror, looks like a junior accountant.) And you know, Danny's a detective ... he gets there eventually, realizing that Steve's pretty invested in having Danny stay in Hawaii and being a part of his life. The thing is ... Danny's pretty invested too - he just doesn't realize it yet.

This story has wonderful characterization, the trademark banter that really makes the show what it is, and a nice view of the team and Danny's family. It's a feel-good story. It's a dopey grin story. It's one that I go back to and reread when I want something fun and a little bit sweet.

Why this must be read: I've been less happy with this season of H50 than I was with the first season, and I think that's made me nostalgic. Everything seems simpler in that first flush of a new series - less troublesome back story to deal with, fewer inconsistencies of character, lines of dialogue fandom can pounce on and spin into epic tales. For example, in S1 episode 1 when Danny proclaims, "I swim for survival, not for fun" ... I'm sure the producers had no idea what they were starting.

This was one of the early fics that riffed off that line. Danny and Steve under fire, standing on the edge of a cliff and their only way out is down. Into the ocean. Can Danny really swim?

What I love about this fic (and all of Giddy's) works is that though it starts there--with the seed of an idea from the show--it quickly moves somewhere else, and in this case, it kicks everything up a notch (or ten) and moves them to the bedroom in a post-adrenaline high that just makes everything hotter.

And like all things Giddy, it's got great banter and humor even in the midst of getting down and dirty with one another. If you missed this one, make sure you check it out. It's still one of my favourites.

Why this must be read: I think this was the very first story I read in the H50 fandom. It's written not long after the show started airing and it captures that already recognizable banter between the characters, as well as giving some nice insight into Steve. I'm a sucker for hurt/comfort, even if it's just looking after someone with a miserable cold, but what stayed with me in this story was the description of the guestroom at Steve's house. So much character revealed in just a few lines. To me, that's what elevates this story from being a standard hurt/comfort fic to something more weighty. It's simple, it's short, but it delivers on everything it promises, and gives the reader that bit of extra insight into the characters. It remains one of my favorites.

I'm a couple of days late in starting because I literally just got back from Hawaii where I (alas) did not see any of our favorite H50 actors. Why this must be read: Today is Groundhog's Day, so how could I possibly resist rec'cing a fantastic Groundhog's Day story like this one? It's a trope that, when used adeptly, can reveal a great deal about the characters and their motivations by simply changing a few details. And ember_firedrake has managed to write a piece that flows beautifully; it strikes the right balance of repeated details and changes, and even if Danny feels stuck in his repeating Friday, the reader will recognize his progress.

It's a first season story with all the key players. We get to see Danny as a father, a partner, a cop, a friend, a matchmaker, and in every role he remains someone who's looking for something to ground him, something to call home. You'll love the way he convinces people to believe that he's trapped in a time-loop, and what he learns by having to repeat certain tasks over and over. It's a fantastic character piece and a really good example of this trope done right! Happy Groundhog's Day!

Another fine example of sheafrotherdon's writing, I really like how this fic illustrates Danny's character, his family life, and how his team is there for him, through thick and thin. On top of that, it gives more depth and resolution to an episode screaming out for exploration. We get to see Danny's family come to Hawaii from New Jersey after Danny calls a stop on his brother's plane before it leaves the airport. (For that alone, this fic should be recced 'cause shea brings ALL members of family Williams to life so brilliantly!) Deeply emotional, this fic shines in its characterization, sense of family, and love, both between the Williams clan, the H50 clan, and between Danny and Steve. I loved and adored every minute of it.

A stirring look into the sharing of traditions, the transition from soldier to cop, and the coming together of a team into family. Azrael re-wrote a moment from the 1st episode into a scene with such depth and weight that I dare you not to be moved. Danny shares a gift from his past in the NJ police world, using it bring Steve into the new law enforcement side of the law and order family and gifting them all with protection and friendship. A very nice look at early H50 that shows us so many hints of what this group of four individuals will grow into.

A neat look at a character not featured that much in ficcage (that I've read at least), Jenna Kaye, and a fantastic outsider look on the Steve and Danno dynamic in an episode that rocked fandom. This fic deserves a place among the best of H50 fics. Fangirls went spastic over the h/c that episode 1x23 gave us (myself included :D), and the hug! Oh the hug that rocked the H50 world... Calie expounds on the Steve/Danny elements through the eyes of Jenna, the new girl on the block. We get to see how earnest she is to earn her place in this family, this team. And seeing Steve as a character and his relationship with Danny through Jenna's eyes sheds some light on her motivations and backgrounds so subtly that Calie should be rewarded for expressing it so well, really. Overall, a blending of character exploration and canon h/c extravaganza that will make you want to read more!

This fic is moving on so many levels, the amount of respect and honor it portrays. All the while giving us a glimpse into a part of Steve's character that doesn't get touched on much in ficcage. As a watcher of many shows that showcase the miltary (NCIS, Stargate, ect.) and being from a strong military family, my respect for those individuals, and their families, who sacrifice so much for their country knows no limit. Reading that portrayed so lovingly in a sanguine2's deft hands was a real treat. Then add that onto a fantastic character and relationship piece and you've got a fic that deserves to be spotlighted and remembered.

The finale to the 1st season left me gasping on the floor at the turn of events, and I know it did the same with others. Steve arrested, Kono facing an investigation, Chin apparently a traitor, and Danny possibly leaving the island altogether threw many fans for a loop, myself included. To tide us frantic fans over the summer break, masterpieces such as this cropped up and gave us our breathe again. For such a short fic, Anchor gives us fangirls just what we need, a sense that the Ohana is still working together to save its members and Danny is still that rock steady friend that Steve needs to pull him through this. Definitely a fic that made my summer hiatus of 2011 a little easier. :)

A breathtaking cross that keeps both show's characters so IC that I could hear the lines in my head and meshes the two very different canons into a seamless whole that is the hallmark of a well written crossover. I loved seeing Blair and Jim in the role of mentors for a new Sentinal!Steve and Danny not really sure about this "Guide" stuff but willing to try to help his friend and lover. And how Jane chose to weave everything together, with the Jim and Blair bits in the past via flashbacks, and the Steve and Danny stuff in the present made for a very comprehensive timeline of events. I got more into the story because of that. Overall, a great cross between two great canons that you'll enjoy to the hilt.

And now for a nice antidote to my last heart-wrenching rec. This sweet and gentle look at daily life and fatherhood will bring a smile to your face and a heart swell to your chest. Gracie wants to learn to dance for her eighth grade formal and enlists Uncle Steve to help. Somehowhunbroken has woven together a tale that makes me just smile now, thinking about it. She's got the character voices down superbly and keeps the fic at a sweetly tender level without marching into the saccharine. Overall, a fic to just make you grin at the lovely father/uncle/daughter moments.

Steve wakes from a horrifying dream and Danny talks him through the aftermath, having Steve describe his current surroundings and basing him in the here and now. The sheer love that vibrates through this entire short story will just make you smile through the few tears that appear over Steve's ordeal. I guarantee that this is a fic that will stay with you.

A wonderful fic to start out with, Wickedtruth brings to us so many points that I love in this fandom. She brings together action elements with the h/c and Steve and Danno's relationship to create a story worth spending an hour with. We also get to see a bit into Danny's past in New Jersey with a case that followed him to Paradise. With raw emotions as Steve and Danny find each other and wonderful support from Chin and Kono, this fic will leave you smiling and jonsing for more H50 love.

Why this must be read: Because Arthur's from Hawaii ... which comes as a tremendous surprise to Eames. When Arthur gets a call to come home because his older brother Steve's been hurt (and is resisting staying in the hospital - how typical!), Eames offers to tag along and in doing so learns a great deal about Arthur and Arthur's terrifyingly competent (and somewhat messed-up) family.

What I really like about this story is that we're shown two very different versions of Arthur: the one Eames knows in the film, and the one who's at home in Hawaii with a surfboard and wet curls and a family in law enforcement. Steve in this story is every bit the over-protective, suspicious, one-man-army (Navy!) he is in H50, and Danny's the wise-cracking voice of "stop interrogating Arthur's boyfriend!" It's by turns funny and heart-tugging, and it gives a lovely window into not only Steve and Danny's banter-driven relationship, but also that Arthur and Eames are both heavily invested in their own relationship, even if they've never articulated the fact.

This take on Arthur and his family makes sense to me given the Hawaii 5-0 back story: mother killed in an "accident", father obsessed with a case and murdered by a criminal, the siblings sent away to become under- or over-achievers who don't play by the book, and yet can't quite escape the need to be part of something, a family.

There are spot-on appearances by Kono, Chin, Grace, and a fantastic Mary McGarrett, and I think the character dialogue is terrific, especially Danny. His rants are priceless and the way he "manages" Steve is much like the show. Plus getting to see Arthur in a setting so far removed from Inception allows both Eames and the reader to get to know the character in a whole new, and completely believable, way.

This should appeal to fans of either the film or the new television series and I think the writer's provided sufficient background to fill in the blanks if you're only familiar with one of the sources. Aloha!

I love gender/sex swap fics, particularly when they have something interesting to say about gender, and this one is excellent. The entire team is swapped, so Danny, Steve, and Chin are female, while Kono is male. But Danny totally steals the show here. She's tough and loud and everything we know from canon, and translated so perfectly I can't even stand it. I could just see her so clearly in my head, and Steve too. The dynamic between Steve and Danny is just as fiery and adorable and compelling as it is on the show. This is one of my favorite H50 fics, period, so I hope you'll give it a shot even if you don't generally read sex or gender swaps.

The writing is both funny and a bit heart-breaking in places, and it all leads up to a very satisfying (and hot!) ending.

The sequel, Over the Rolling Waves, takes a look at the problems the team faces now that they're in a relationship together. What I love best are the glimpses we get of the individual relationships - which of the guys Kono goes to when she needs help, who gets jealous of whom, who sees Steve when he's most vulnerable, and which one ends up tied to Steve's headboard with one of Danny's ties. :) I love the team's dynamic in these fics - just as much love between them as there is on the show, plus a lot of hot sex!

Why this must be read: This is the story of Steve and Catherine's first meeting and first hook-up, from Cath's POV. I love the characterizations, especially Catherine's, and the dynamic between the two of them. Both of them read very clearly to me here. Also, the sex is hot!

Hi! I am tailoredshirt and I will be reccing Hawaii Five-0 fics this month. Apologies for the late start, but I will try to make up for it. I plan to rec a variety of pairings and ratings so that hopefully everyone will find something they like.

Why this must be read: This story is based on the following prompt: When Grace is kidnapped, Steve goes full-on ninja to rescue her. They can only send one person in to get her, so against all of his protective paternal instincts Danny has to trust Steve to do it, since he's the most capable. Bonus if Steve gets badly injured during all of this.

I admit that, like a lot of Steve/Danny shippers, I am a sucker for fics where Steve is protective of Danny's daughter Grace. This fic is a wonderful take on that trope. The emotions are well realized, and the ending is so satisfying. I have read this fic more than once and want to curl up inside of it every time.
