Why this must be read: This is a short but very satisfying look at two characters we rarely got to see interact in canon. The characterization of both is pitch-perfect. It’s a great (and amusing) look at how lonely it must be like to be Walt---the only kid in the camp. And having people like Sawyer (even despite their hidden soft sides) around doesn’t really help.

Why this must be read: Shannon is one of those characters that, oddly enough, is much more likable in prose form than she was in the show. The writing here is gorgeous, and Shannon’s POV is this heartbreaking balance between shallow and insecure and laugh-out-loud funny. Her thought processes are of a real girl. But my favorite aspect are the fantastic little details about the uncertainty of living on the beach that go into it, like having to steal toothpaste and how to keep your secrets in a camp where there’s no alone time. I have to admit that this is my favorite canon pairing. They never would have had a chance to get to know one another in normal circumstances… but island life is like summer camp. Two good-looking people with nothing to do all day end up finding out that they can and do have a connection. It’s random, but it works (at least, for me). And they were very sexy together onscreen. The fic captures that, too. :)

Sayid earns Brownie points - not that he or Shannon were ever Girl Scouts - for not making a comment when she goes into her bag for a condom and three boxes fall out.

(Later, when she's over-analyzing everything, she realizes that if he had even seen them, he probably thought she bought them from Sawyer, or something. There's everything else on the damn plane, why not a million condoms?)

This fic deals with Daniel's actions post-s4 finale. He desperately tries to find a way to make it back to the island. Only, when he gets there, things are not as he expected.
This is a sweet, melancholy story, with Daniel acting out of his comfort zone and yet very in character.

His strangled tie drags over the bottom of the boat, starting to soak up the water that has pooled there after being sprayed over the side. Everything he can think of is written down – there's more than that, he's sure there was more but he just can't remember it – before he looks up as if breaking out of a deep trance.

The others on the small boat are watching him intensely, in the same way that they'd watch a skilled magician.

Why this must be read:

Captivity!fic, written before S3, when we still didn't know how captivity was going to be, this dark but not sad fic captures perfectly the yearning Jack and Sawyer have for each other even if they would address it only under strong circumstances, the desperation but at the same time the strong comfort that each of them receive from the other's presence. Everything is tied in together with great dialogue and hot sex with dirty talk.
In retrospect, it's also amazing how much of the elements the author wrote became part of canon.

Why this must be read:
I had to get back to my favourite pairing, sooner or later. Even though she's been less present in the fandom in the last few months gemjam wrote a lot of Jack/Sawyer stories and each one of them is special.
This one is very hot and at the same time offers a great insight in the characters, offering a different perspective on what was the reason that brought Sawyer to steal the guns in S2. And, did I mention hot?

If you like her writing, I suggest checking out all her fics, but in particular the Jack/Ford series (AU where Jack meets the hitchhiker James Ford) - I truly loved that one - and the Collared series (Jack/Sawyer/Sayid BSDM), though it might not be everyone's cup of tea.

Bang bang

Why this must be read: A very prolific writer, janie_tangerine writes complex and evocative stories, often dealing with neglected characters. She writes a lot of different pairings and hilarious crack!fics, but she's also the 'official' Boone lover in the fandom.
This fic, in particular, portrays a more mature and intriguing - but not less in character - Boone, helping a post-rescue, drunken and devasted by guilt Jack cope. It's a long process, to make Jack better, and it's beautiful to read.

Summary:
It isn’t really a surprise when he appears one day when Jack is really drunk; he was the only one missing after all and it’s just fitting that he’s the last. The first and the last, how damn ironic.

He sits on his mattress, his back up to the wall, a half empty whiskey bottle in his hand, ready for the lecture. He doesn’t even look at him after the first glance. He just waits for Boone to start 'you have to go back'-ing him but what he hears is not what he was expecting.

This is extremely intriguing, with the alpha male conflict that Jack and Dean are prone to have right from the start resolving into some very hot sexual tension.

Why this must be read: toestastegood writes very original and in character Charlie-centric fics and this one in particular is very fascinating.
It's an apocalyptic AU and the claustrophobic atmosphere is perfectly balanced by the elusive but sweet connection between Charlie and Sawyer, drawn to each other like ships in the night. Even if you didn't think about this pairing before, I think this fic could change your mind.

This fic, canon-based for the most part, is able to beautifully highlight a few aspects of her, and her relationship with Boone, and Jack, and it is simply heartbreaking, but in a good way.

Why this must be read: I'm again reccing two fics by the same author because I can't choose among them, they are both so brilliant, original and well written! (see below for the rec of The Man Inside).
This one is a great story, with an amazing characterization of two characters that in canon are so minor one almost doesn't remember about them and that now are suddenly alive for me in such a way that I'd love if Lost told their story too.
eponine119 gave both Aaron and Clementine such interesting personalities and backgrounds, and she wrote a riveting tale that follows Aaron and Clementine through the years, taking into account those mysteries that are now part of the life of these two characters, meanwhile highlighting those subtle similarities between them and their family.
This story is now part of my personal canon.

With just a few words, each sentence meaningful, eponine119 sheds a new light on the Jack-Sawyer dualism that is one of the one of the themes I love most in Lost. I loved this fic to pieces. Set around middle S3, It highlights their being two sides of the same coin, and made me look at both Jack and Sawyer in a different, deeper way. After reading this I kept asking myself how could I have not seen the whole scheme before - but it was thanks to this talented writer that I was able to see it at all.

It is my personal opinion that zelda_zee writes unforgettable sex scenes; they become more special because of the emotions that the characters feel. This series can be considered another 'classic' for the fandom and it's a real pleasure to read. It's in character, angsty and with plot. And so hot.
It features a distressed and anxious Jack, an enigmatic and incredibly intriguing Sayid and a sexy and provocative Sawyer. In Vegas.

Summary: Future!fic (now AU). A year after their return, the survivors meet again in Las Vegas. What awaits Jack there is beyond his wildest imaginings. That night he strikes a drunken deal with Sayid which will have surprising repercussions.

It's Lost crossed with Misery. RPF horror/humour and Crack!fic. Damon Lindelof has been kidnapped by a crazy fangirl who is furious with him for killing off her favourite character.

falafel_fiction is one of the writers well known for her fascination with Charlie and her ability to write him in character.
I don't usually read a lot of fics about Charlie, though I like him a lot, but this was part of the Lost Horror Stories at lostsquee and I gave it a shot. And I loved it! :)
This time Charlie isn't here, but he is the very reason for the existence of this fic.

Damon groaned as he drifted slowly back into wakefulness. He blinked his eyes and found that he was imprisoned in a small darkened room. His chest and arms were bound securely to a chair and his bare feet were roped together. He frowned as he remembered having Dom Monaghan tied up in this same fashion on his last few days of work. Beware of the fangirl

Why this must be read:This is one of the fics I read whenever I'm feeling the need for a good and satisfying J/S fix. It's AU, very sexy and with hurt/comfort, sort of.

I debated for a while whether to rec this one or the previous Sawyer/Juliet by the same author (We must have died alone, a long long time ago, see below for the rec). At first I settled on the other one, mostly because I wanted to rec different kind of fics, showing that the Lost fandom has a lot to offer for every taste. But then I remembered that there's no upper limit for recs for fandoms featured only once in a while, and I really wanted to share this old favourite with you, hoping you'll enjoy it as I did.

This fic is raw and loving at the same time, and of course, hot. And halfdutch writes some of the best descriptions of Sawyer, both his appearance (his hair!) and his attitude, with every little gesture being very sensuous.

Summary: The wrong escort shows up at Jack's hotel room.

"At least you’re blonde," Jack said and somehow he was laughing. The situation really was absurd. And God he was drunk. His hands had that weird, rubbery feeling like they didn’t even belong to him anymore.

Why this must be read:
It's only been a few hours since the chopper left, but already it seems like they were never here.

halfdutch is another of my favourite authors, and even though I'm particularly fond of her Jack/Sawyer fics (see above for the rec of her fic The Mix-Up), I'm choosing "We must have died alone, a long long time ago" because this fic - set after the end of s4 - made me fall in love with this pairing.

She writes Sawyer and Juliet flawlessly, with the mixture of strenght and weakness that is so attractive in both of them. I loved how believable is the implicit connection between them in this fic: under the disguise of a simple way to draw comfort from each other, somehow a more intimate message passes between them.

She's not sure if she's the one who gets out the bottles of wine or if it's Sawyer, but they end up on her couch, too spent to do anything but drink in moody silence. She squints at the painting of a sailboat on her living room wall. She's going to have to look at that same stupid painting every day of the rest of her life. Why this must be read:
In the last two years, since she first started writing in the fandom, elliotsmelliot has quickly become one of those authors you can read with the certainty you'll enjoy the fic and, more often than not, it will make you think. Her evocative writing, rich of plot and character insight, adds depth and meaning to events that canon doesn't explain, giving it reasons and making it more complete and believable (Her fic Collision is my personal Lost finale, at least until we know the real one, and maybe even after).
"The mouth that lies, slays the soul", in particular, deals with what happened during the week on the boat that rescued the Oceanic Six at the end of S4. The title and the different sections are so appropriate that it's almost eerie to read. Quoting from the author's summary:

In his treatise "On Lying", St. Augustine claimed there are eight kinds of lies. Over the course of one week, nearly all types were told onboard the Searcher; however, no saints were present.

The mouth that lies, slays the soul

So, here's my first rec. I'm admittedly a Jack/Sawyer shipper, but I promise I'll try to rec different pairings as well. Enjoy!

Because it's an amazing, epic story of love. It's Jack and Sawyer, future!fic (now AU), set 1 year post rescue.

This is one of a my favourite authors. She is a great and consistent writer, and she has written at least three of my favourite series (I have a soft spot for Nailed and its dark, broken!Jack in particular).
But I'm reccing this one, in particular, because I think it can be considered a classic for this fandom.
elise_509 has an excellent grasp on both Jack - something not that easy to achieve - and Sawyer, and you will be able to feel this story in your bones, its angsty and happy moments, and to see it playing like a movie in front of your eyes thanks to her excellent visual writing and her care for details.

Why this must be read: This story has one of the hottest sex scenes I've ever read. There's a long, slow build-up to it that just adds to the tension. But the words and the details and the descriptions of the act itself are precise and poetic and very explicit. At the same time, the focus on actions rather than emotions or words is also very fitting for these two characters and the way they relate to each other.

Why this must be read: lundatura writes gorgeous prose, with unique insight into the characters. The pairings she writes are fairly unusual, but they are absolutely believable in her capable hands. Here, she uses Jack as almost an observer to great effect. The reader rides along with him, feeling his confusion and his longing. At the same time, the small details she chooses make the story spring to life.

Why this must be read: I love this story because it's like no other Lost story I've ever read. It's post-rescue, and narrated by a first person original character, but does neither of those things in the usual way. Boone is the one who's no longer on the island, and the narrator is his nurse, trying to heal him and piece together his story. The quality of writing, and the places it takes you in so few words, is astounding.

Why this must be read: It's pretty rare, in my experience, to find fanfic that can compete with literary fiction, and this story does. Set in Sawyer's southern past, there's a style and tone and sense of place in this story that remind me of the writing of Eudora Welty or Flannery O'Connor. It's that same writing style that makes this simple story so effectively spooky. Adding to the shivers the reader gets at the end is how prescient this story was in terms of things that happened on the show.

Why this must be read: This story is so brilliantly creepy I still think about it.

The surprises of the story play out even darker than the show is willing to go. The macabre twist is on the level of the very best classic horror, like Edgar Allan Poe or tales like "The Monkey's Paw." At the same time, the plot is so logical and fits so perfectly into the world of Lost, and there is much more to this story than mere chills. There is real emotion and depth of feeling, love and loss, hope and hopelessness. The characters' reactions to the events of the story are delicate and subtle and above all, absolutely believable and real.

The Gift

Why this must be read: This is my favorite Kate story. Admittedly, most stories centering on Kate make me hit the "back" button. In many ways, Kate is the audience's proxy on Lost, and even her character is formed in such a way she tries to be all things to all people, and that makes her hard to capture accurately in fiction.

Written in reaction to second season "What Kate Did," this story takes us back to the moments leading up to Kate committing her crime and fills in all the reasons and emotions that the episode left out. It is, in essence, why Kate did it. It doesn't shy away from darkness, which is made more powerful by its almost matter-of-fact telling. The story also makes excellent use of sensory details and is well structured, toying with Lost's flashback motif, with each memory fragment here triggered by the flick of a lighter.

They hate each other, and they hate themselves, and they give in to that and each other with no apologies or artifical niceness.

Why this must be read: Stories that remove Jack and Sawyer from the island and instead feature them meeting in some other time and circumstance are both popular and common. The trick to them is to use the new setting to showcase sides of the characters we would never see on the island, while retaining the essence of the characters from the show. uberaeryn does a fantastic job in this story, which transmutes Sawyer into a tattoo artist and Jack into the dark, masochistic customer who intrigues him enough to make him break all his rules. What I love about this story is that it doesn't pull back from pain. It eroticizes it for the reader through the characters' own experiences and reactions, culminating in an incredibly hot sex scene.

An AU in which Sawyer, seven years prior to the crash, attempts to run a con on a young Kate Austin and ends up falling for her instead. I don't normally go for fics this romantic when it comes to these two, but then again, I'm a universal romantic, so it works. The character voices are still completely intact and you can absolutely see this being an alternate connect between them. Good stuff.
