Fandom: SANCTUARY Pairing: Will/Declan friendship Length: 800 words Author on LJ: doylefan22Author Website: doylefan22 @ ff.netWhy this must be read: Will finds out that payback is a bitch. A short humorous piece set Post-Veritas, and one of the few fic out there featuring Declan. Payback

Fandom: SANCTUARY Pairing: none (minor Helen/John UST, James/John UST) Length: ~ 2,000 words Author on LJ: penknifeAuthor Website: Penknife @ AO3Why this must be read: penknife is one of the best authors in this fandom, hands down. I try not to rec authors more than twice in one run, but I'll probably be breaking that rule this month because it is so difficult to choose from among these amazing fics. This is one of my favorite fics in the fandom because Helen, John, James and Ashley all sitting together at the dinner table trying to make it through the meal without killing each other during Revelations Part 1 is possibly the fic I've been waiting for my entire life (well, at least since I started watching Sanctuary). This fic is done from Henry's POV, which is so perfect because although Henry sees everything going on before him, he isn't able to connect all the pieces - penknife leaves it up to the readers to put it together for themselves. penknife pays attention to all the little details, which are at times hilarious. As Ashley puts it, this is the world's most awkward family reunion and it's just awesome. Family Dinner

Fandom: SANCTUARY Pairing: Will/John friendship Length: 3,067 words Author on LJ: lanna_kittyAuthor Website: variousnsundry, Lannakitty @ AO3Why this must be read: Jack the Ripper is buying me coffee. That sentence was enough to get me to read this fic. Set post-The Five, John and Will have a conversation about Helen and Ashley. In a coffee shop, which is utterly the most loltastic place for this to happen, even though this isn't really a humorous fic. Excellent character insights into Helen and a great depiction of a John trying his best to care for those he loves whether they appreciate it or not. Death Gets a Latte

Fandom: SANCTUARY Pairing: Helen/Nikola, John/Nikola, Helen/John/Nikola Length: 6,778 words Author on LJ: jjtaylorAuthor Website: jjtaylor @ AO3Why this must be read: A beautifully written fic from Nikola's POV about those six weeks between Revelations and End of Nights, and one of my top three favorite fics in the entire fandom. jjtaylor absolutely nails Nikola and his relationships with the other characters. jjtaylor writes a snarky Nikola, yes, but also a far more nuanced Nikola who sees far more deeply than people give him credit for, who in his own way does care. The other characters are incredibly well written as well and the ships work perfectly. I especially love Nikola's observations about Helen and about working for the Sanctuary. And oh, what a killer last sentence! Also, Helen wears really hot shoes and I applaud jjtaylor for taking note of this in the fic. It is cold when Nikola arrives in Anchorage, at the base of the mountain just behind the city. He guesses he should be thankful that Druitt did not drop him into the embankment and let him slide his way into town.
"Thank you for the lift," he says, and Druitt eyes him balefully, and hands him a pair of fur-lined gloves before teleporting back to the Sanctuary. It is, for Druitt, a remarkably kind gesture.Ice Into Water

Fandom: SANCTUARY Pairing: Nikola/James friendship Length: 3,154 words Author on LJ: ankaretAuthor Website: Ankaret @ AO3Why this must be read: Nikola and James exchange letters throughout the decades following Nikola's "death" and continue a long running chess game. I love reading fics written in alternate formats such as entirely in letters. The snark is fantastic, the writing tight, the wit pointed and James and Nikola's voices come through oh so perfectly. I love how it takes them years just to finish a conversation, and lol at Nikola mocking James' nose. You and I both remember the attack that you made on me in 1952, and how I was forced to drive you off with my sword-stick. (By the by, I was always fond of that sword-stick; if you chanced to keep it about the place after you finally pulled it out of your ribcage, please return it to me care of the London Sanctuary. If you did not keep it, no matter). The Great Game

Fandom: SANCTUARY Pairing: Helen/James Length: 2,361 words Author on LJ: forensicirulanAuthor Website: Fic TagWhy this must be read: The first thing that drew me into this fic was the title. So few words, but the title almost functions as a story unto itself in all its heartbreaking glory. Great look into James' head and his thoughts on Helen. I love this depiction of their relationship, because I can't see it playing out any other way for James. And the ending that forensicirulan picks is just perfect - such subtle denial. Helen is too wrapped up in her head to see what's right in front of her, both literally and metaphorically. I make love to you but you never notice

Fandom: SANCTUARY Pairing: Henry/OFC Length: 1,430 words Author on LJ: jendavisAuthor Website: Master Fic PostWhy this must be read: What happens when a werewolf imprints on someone - and they don't live happily ever after? jendavis takes a trope that has been massacred to death by Twilight and reinvents it, with fabulous results. Excellent Henry voice and nice to see the relationship between him and Bigfoot. It's just a one-night stand that's stretched for fourteen years now. Circuitry of the Wolf

Fandom: SANCTUARY Pairing: Helen/John Length: 3,347 words Author on LJ: nocleversigAuthor Website: NoCleverSig @ ff.netWhy this must be read: This is one of the few series I've seen written for this fandom, and certainly one of the longest. Clocking in at 11 stories so far and counting, NoCleverSig just keeps cranking out good work. The series deals with Helen and John getting back together after Helen rids John of the energy creature. It's a long and bumpy road for the two of them with stories ranging from comedic to dark, happy to heartbreaking. Stories can be read as stand alones if you don't want to read the whole thing in one sitting. No Destination In Mind Series

Fandom: SANCTUARY Pairing: John/Nikola Length: 3,347 words Author on LJ: skidmoAuthor Website: skidmo_ficWhy this must be read: So normally I'm really not into slash at all, but the Five are just so shippable with each other that I make an exception. Playing off the fact that Nikola has survived some incredibly brutal things like getting impaled and having a fist through his abdomen, this fic features several really violent interactions between John and Nikola. John always had it in for Nikola and it totally works. A good exploration of John's ripper tendencies and Nikola's headspace. The first time was an accident. Nikola is fairly certain about this.Five Times Druitt Tried to Kill Tesla

Fandom: SANCTUARY Pairing: Helen/Nikola Length: 2,231 words Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: Isagel @ AO3Why this must be read: This is one hell of a smoking hot and well written fic. Nikola, Helen and the 1920's would have hit the spot right there, but Isagel throws in electricity too and sparks fly, literally and metaphorically. "I merely think that we would be wrong to use our gifts to bring about violence."
He smiles, a wicked twist of his broad mouth, and leans close.
"No," he says, and raises his hand - the one that's not holding his coupe of champagne - to her face, stroking a stray lock of hair back behind her ear. "I can think of far more interesting uses for them, can't you?"Current of Time

palmaceae here, slipping into the driver's seat for the very first Sanctuary recs on crack_van. May there be many more recs in the future! Many of the recs will be centered on The Five, but I'll try to throw in some other characters as well. Mostly gen and het with a bit of slash here and there. If I disappear for several days, that's because I'm busy freaking out over my LSATs next week. But don't worry - I've been saving up fics for months. I'll make sure you have plenty to read before the month is over. Fandom: SANCTUARY Pairing: Gen; Clara/Will Length: 2,839 words Author on LJ: mad_maudlinAuthor Website: Mad_Maudlin @ AO3, 10leaguesbeyondWhy this must be read: An excellent character study and history of Clara Griffin, who unfortunately only appeared for four episodes. We learn very little about Clara onscreen, but there are many juicy little hints about her past that Mad_Maudlin does a fantastic job elaborating on. The magnificent evolution of a troubled girl into a courageous woman. They'd like to see through me, but nothing is more opaque than absolute transparency. - Margaret Atwood Chiaroscuro
