Title: "District Eight" by [livejournal.com profile] irony_rocks
Pairing: Amy/Rory, Doctor/River
Author on LJ:[livejournal.com profile] irony_rocks
Author Website: Master Fic List

Why this must be read: This author (also the mod of [livejournal.com profile] het_reccers) is one of my absolute favorites, and every time I start on a new fandom I'm delighted to see she's already been kicking ass and taking names there, too. "District Eight" is short fusion tale wherein Amelia Pond and Rory Williams are chosen as District 8’s Tributes for the 100th Hunger Games. As always, [livejournal.com profile] irony_rocks nails the characterizations, for both fandoms, and leaves you wanting more. (Also, River Song would probably be the best mentor ever.)

Donna shakes her head. “Oh, no, Amy. I’m going to help you make an impression." )

9th-Nov-2012 01:45 pm "The Fire Beneath" by DustWriter (M)
Fandom: THE HUNGER GAMES
Pairing: Katniss/Peeta, Madge/Gale
Length: 42,423 words
Author on LJ: None
Author Website: DustWriter Fics

Why this must be read: This is my second AU rec by this author, admittedly, but I have my reasons. Namely, that true alternate-universe fics in this fandom are difficult to do well, and that this is an example of a fic that succeeds. The author sets a familiar cast of characters in a Pennsylvania coal mining town, and while there's no real-world equivalent of the Games, there's still plenty of risk, poverty, and weighted promises of a better life. I think it's the truest THG AU I've read, and I hope you agree.

7th-Nov-2012 11:02 am "Their Last Night of Love: A Special Verity Presentation..." by Yahtzee (M)
Fandom: THE HUNGER GAMES
Pairing: Katniss/Peeta
Length: 5125 words
Author on LJ[livejournal.com profile] yahtzee63
Author Website: AO3 | Website

Why this must be read: Yahtzee is one of those authors where, if you've been in fandom for long enough, you must have read her work sooner or later, especially if you're into "Buffy." But I digress. "Their Last Night of Love: A Special Verity Presentation, Exclusively For Preferred Customers" is an AU tweak to Catching Fire that shows off the Capitol creepiness in all of its glory, as well as the small ways our Victors fight back.

Given the extraordinary public support of your romance, we had wanted to allow the audience to share in every aspect of your upcoming marriage. And they were naturally excited to be present for not only your wedding, but also your wedding night. )

5th-Nov-2012 01:30 pm Twenty Four Victors, Twenty Four Tributes by aimmyarrowshigh (M)
I'm moving halfway up the East Coast (of the U.S.) the week after next, so this is my attempt to get as many recs out as possible before I start forgetting about things in the shuffle.

Fandom: THE HUNGER GAMES
Pairing: Mostly gen with references to Katniss/Peeta, Finnick/Annie, Haymitch/Chaff
Length: ~5k words
Author on LJ[livejournal.com profile] aimmyarrowshigh
Author Website: Twitter  | Tumblr | FFN

Why this must be read: This fic creates and explores bits of truths and backstories for the two dozen Victors chosen for the Quarter Quell in Catching Fire. Some are barely a sentence long, others are nearly one-shots of their own, but each item will give you pause. Many will make you reconsider how little you cared about the unnamed or more brutal Victor-Tributes, or those less sympathetic to the rebellion--not to mention what the Capitol is capable of. The author writes with a cool detachment, recounting facts without passing judgement, and the overall effect is excellent.

4th-Nov-2012 07:09 pm "The End is the Beginning" by spanglemaker9 (M)
I just realized I neglected to introduce myself last week, so hi! I'm [livejournal.com profile] stars_inthe_sky (you can also find me on Tumblr). I've driven vans for Buffy, Firefly, and Broadway musicals in the past, and now I'm back for a spin in the world of Panem. I'm mostly a fan of canon and canon-compliant pairings and stories, so prepare for a lot of, er, Peeniss (worst/best portmanteau ever...) and pre-Mockingjay epilogue stories, as well as a few intriguing AUs (one of which I've already recced)!

Now let the games begin!

Fandom: THE HUNGER GAMES
Pairing: Katniss/Peeta
Length: ~5k words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] spanglemaker9
Author Website: Twitter  | AO3 | Tumblr

Why this must be read: "The End is the Beginning" is another entry into the Mockingjay epilogue accordion folder, and it's one where the author does an excellent job of capturing Katniss's tell-don't-show voice in the books. Your mileage may vary on the literary value, but there's no doubt that this reads like a condensed chapter left out of the end of the trilogy. It's also noteworthy for treating our heroes like the adolescents they still are--barely eighteen when the story ends--and incorporating all of the angst and uncertainty and sharpened worldviews of the age.

Each time I have a moment of clarity, I feel a little bad about not trying harder to be present. But not bad enough to actually be present. The absence is easier, so I am absent. )

2nd-Nov-2012 10:27 am "Desert Blossom" by DustWriter (M)

Fandom: THE HUNGER GAMES
Pairing: Peeta/Katniss
Length: ~50k words
Author on LJ: None
Author Website: DustWriter Fics

Why this must be read: Alternate-universe Hunger Games stories are incredibly hard to do well, because the progression of events and the high stakes in canon are so (intentionally) contrived that it's difficult to mirror them onto, say, a high-school or coffeeshop setting. "Desert Blossom" is the exception that proves the rule--a fic that takes familiar and original characters and situates them in modern-day Afghanistan. Rather than attempt to translate the Games or the strange and systemic oppression of Panem directly into our world, the author uses this setting to explore the contrasts between the lives of Americans and the Afghanis they purport to protect. The story is from Peeta's perspective, but I love what DustWriter did with Katniss--she is as strong, resilient, and protective as ever, but a different life story means that those traits manifest differently. The narrative stretches believability in a few places, but the whole things is so well-thought-out and thoroughly researched that you'll have trouble putting it down (figuratively speaking).

I'm going to get the shot of a lifetime in Kabul this semester. It's going to get me a job anywhere. )

1st-Nov-2012 02:28 pm "The Unrecorded Hours" by hollycomb (R)

Fandom: THE HUNGER GAMES
Pairing: Peeta/Katniss, Johanna/Gale
Length: ~24k words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] hollycomb
Author Website: Master Fic List

Why this must be read: The was one of the first Hunger Games fics I ever read, and it's certainly stuck with me the most. There's a whole sector of THG fic filling in the blanks between the end of the war and the Mockingjay epilogue, but "The Unrecorded Hours" is the best I've read. Told from Katniss's perspective, the whole thing is very natural and honest, but it doesn't lack for poetry. And I always love seeing our heroes find a bit of a happy ending in a way that just feels right and in keeping with the spirit of the books.

There's no point, the two of us alone in these big houses. )

Hey all. I've had a great time introducing this fandom to [livejournal.com profile] crack_van this month, and I hope a few of you have enjoyed the recs. Until next time!

Fandom: THE HUNGER GAMES
Pairing: Katniss/Peeta, Katniss/Gale
Length: 5k
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] jacyevans
Author Website: [livejournal.com profile] aseagulliniowa
Why this must be read:

This is another of the 'what if' fics that I talked about early on, based on the premise that Katniss does not kill Coin, but sticks to the plan of killing Snow, and they go ahead with the Hunger Games choosing all Capitol children. [livejournal.com profile] jacyevans has fantastic writing style, paints an extremely compelling portrait even of characters that are hard to like, is smart as all get out about how this scenario would play out, and somehow manages to end the story with the same kind of hope that Collins' imbued her ending with.

Why this must be watched:

Okay, this isn't a vid in the traditional sense. I'm, admittedly, not a huge vid-watcher and so my ability to rec in this area is limited. BUT, despite being a completely different format, i.e., the recreation of the first book with Beanie Babies, this is completely clever, awesome and fun. Seriously, adorbs.

Fandom: THE HUNGER GAMES
Pairing: Katniss/Peeta
Length: 5,868 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] wisteria_

Why this must be read:

This story is from Peeta's POV, post-Mockingjay. A lot of people have tried to write this story, about how we get from the end to the epilogue, but this is by far one of the best versions I've seen. The pacing is perfect, and Peeta's voice is dead on. It's just a fantastic missing scene; or, really, missing book.

Length: ~7k

Why this must be read:

The characterization in this is mindblowing, and the representation of the Capitol, the way it controls everything and destroys whatever gets in its way is really stark, brilliant, because it's through the eyes of Johanna, who's known of the menace of the Capitol her whole life, but is just starting to really wrap her mind around it. Also, it's fantastic back-story on Finnick and Annie.

Fandom: THE HUNGER GAMES
Pairing: Katniss/Peeta
Length: 2,440 words
Author: [livejournal.com profile] athousandwinds
Author Website: her AO3 page
Why this must be read:

The conceit of this fic is that Katniss gives an interview twenty-five years after the overthrow of Snow and the Capitol, and is truthful about the events from her perspective. This fic has GREAT outsider POV, and the style is dead-on something you'd read in The New Yorker or Vanity Fair. It's smart, succinct and there's a thread of sweetness running through it.

Why this must be read:

I realize this is starting to sound like a complete lie, but I'm really not a Gale person. It's just that so many authors in THG give such good Gale. Here, there's fantastic post-Mockingjay characterization of both Gale and Johanna, but even more interestingly, of Gale's family, who, despite the story being from Johanna's POV, allow you to see what Johanna looks like to people who have only ever seen her as a victor, which in turn allows the reader--and Johanna herself--to kind of figure out who she's becoming, post-revolution.

Title: Apparent ('Homesick' Re-dub)
Pairing: pre-Cinna/Alec Hardison
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] hegemony
Author Website: Her AO3 page
Why this must be read:

Despite loving both fandoms, I would never have said, "I know! A Leverage/HG xover!" But more than just coming up with the idea, this author makes both fan texts just a little something MORE by bringing them together. The underlying theme here is loss, and moving on from loss, creating ourselves anew from it, and Cinna's POV is fresh and interesting, his insight in Alec particularly telling for an audience who has always seen Alec with his team. It's just really, damn, good.

Length: ~1k

Why this must be read:

Before this fic, I really did not understand Katniss/Gale people. I didn't have anything against Gale, I just didn't see why the two of them worked, at all. This story is not only a fantastic character piece for Gale, it does a lot of work with very few words to make someone who doubts the Katniss/Gale pairing see why it could have worked. Plus, the story is bitterweet and healing in all the right ways.

Fandom: THE HUNGER GAMES
Pairing: None
Length: ~10k
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] lindensphinx
Author Website: Author on AO3, Author's Tumblr
Why this must be read:

Because Collins' writes such a tight first-person POV, the reader of this series does not get much in the way of other character's motivations, fears, etc., except what definitively bleeds through to Katniss' awareness. [livejournal.com profile] lindensphinx creates what is half a "missing scene" in the time starting when Cinna gets the idea to make the mockingjay dress, and half a deliciously well-done character piece. Even more, though, this story gives good insight into what it means to be part of the revolution as a citizen of the capitol, to know what's going on when nobody else seems to. All in all, a fantastic fic.

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] thereprieve
Author Website: her ff.net page
Why this must be read:

This fandom has a fair number of fics that specifically ask "what if the 74th Hunger Games had gone differently?" There are all kinds of really good takes on the question, and I probably will come back to at least one other one before the month is up, but I wanted to get this one recced if no other, because it manages to flesh out two characters who are almost entire opposites and yet bring them to the same place, in some ways. It allows the characters to speak for themselves, while also providing insight into how the reader of the series feels about things. It's just really damn smart.

Length: 8,790 words

Why this must be read:

Because Jada's Johanna-voice is spot on and because this story is about so much more than just Johanna, it's about being a woman in Panem, both pre- and post-revolution. Jada's prose is really...I don't think stark is the word, but it's simple in a way that makes it incredibly powerful. Just, it's a fantastic character study, and an amazing take on what happens after the dust settles.

Fandom: THE HUNGER GAMES
Pairing: none
Length: ~43k
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] deathmallow
Author Website: AO3 page
Why this must be read:

Because it's pretty much the most brilliant construction of Haymitch's backstory in the universe, and it is so, so much more. Deathmallow goes back to the year after Haymitch's victory and very subtly threads the undercurrents of a rebellion already beginning into Haymitch's tale. She also shows us what it means to be a victor, a mentor, and the lone person who has to go back to his District with two dead tributes every year.

She's writing a sequel dealing with the 3rd Quarter Quell that's already over 130k. I am waiting until it is done, but I am so excited I can't EVEN.

Without the sequel, though, this story is exceptional on its own, stark, cutting and somehow, underneath it all, sweet.
