Title: Hellraiser: Hellfire by Xander DG
Pairing: Sebastian Shaw/Emma Frost.
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] xanderdg
Author Website: None

Why this must be read:

One of my favourite X-Men crossovers is a story with very few X-Men in it. Emma Frost has a prominent role, but the protagonist (it wouldn't be right to call him a hero) is a young Sebastian Shaw. If the name is unfamiliar to you, you needn't worry. Apart from the notion of mutant powers, this story doesn't require any knowledge of X-Men continuity, and my total ignorance of Hellraiser was never a problem either.

This is a brilliant, meaty horror story (and it does get gruesome at times) about a young man sent to retrieve a dangerous treasure. Shaw finds what he was looking for, but discovers that LeMarchand's box holds things no wise man would seek out ...

Oh, and fans of DC's Vertigo line will also see a familiar face pop up. He blends right in.

01:16 pm Black Wren Road by CJ (R)
Fandom: Popslash *NSYNC with Backstreet Boys
Pairing: Starts with Joey/AJ, more as the story develops
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] cjmarlowe
Author Website: The Studio
Why this must be read: Most Popslash AUs, no matter which group they are about, keep the group together. This story breaks the convention that the group (or groups) are destined to be together in any time, place, or reality. Although several members of NSync and Backstreet are in the story, they are not all living in the same time and place, and the division does not fall along group lines.

06:32 pm Save the Last Dance for Me by darkstar (R)
Fandom: X-MEN MOVIEVERSE
Pairing: Wolverine/Rogue
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] lady_prufrock
Author Website: Below the Moon
Why this must be read: Darkstar likes to play in the post-Mutant Registration Act (MRA) universe, and few writers do it this convincingly. "Save the Last Dance for Me" is a beautiful, haunting story that makes your heart hurt for the characters, and when Logan and Rogue finally get their dance, it's a scene you'll never forget.

09:47 pm Like Humans Do by Mosca and Stellamaru (NC17)
Fandom: Enterprise
Pairing: Hoshi/T'Pol
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] mosca, [livejournal.com profile] stellamaru
Author Website: You can find Mosca's fics here: homoneurotica and StellaMaru's fics here: Shiny New Thing
Why this must be read:

There's a decent amount of Hoshi/T'Pol fic in the fandom, but I personally haven't found much of it that could work within canon. There are a few notable exceptions to this, and "Like Humans Do" is one of the best examples. My favorite thing about this fic is that it's NC17, but it's not titillating or even sexy. In fact, it's cold and leaves you feeling a bit unsettled. It's sort of a Pon Farr story, which is one of the trappings many fics about T'Pol (and all Vulcan characters) tend to fall into, and this fic sort of pokes fun at that while at the same time showing what a relationship between these two characters might be like.

The original version was written by [livejournal.com profile] mosca, but [livejournal.com profile] stellamaru remixed it for Silverlake's remix challenge, and the two work so well together that I can't recommend one without the other. The original is from Hoshi's POV, and the remix gives T'Pol a chance to speak.

Why this must be read:
This is a good, solid, meaty, case-based story. Our intrepid detectives, Bayliss and Pembleton race against time to locate some physical evidence in a case that looked to be a dunker but isn't actually as straightforward as it seems. Will they put the case down before Gee kicks their asses? This fic captures Tim and Frank at their quarrelsome best, with lots and lots of snark and a side-order of grudging respect. It also provides a fascinating insight into the resolutely unglamorous end of investigative work. This is our detectives detecting. It's a whole lot of dogged grunt work coupled with a tiny flash of inspiration that gets it done in the end.
