12:44 am Legacy by Anglachel (R)
Fandom: LORD OF THE RINGS
Pairing: Frodo, Bilbo, various minor/original characters
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] anglachel1
Author Website: Romenna
Why this must be read: Continuing the hobbit theme from my first recommendation...

Legacy makes Shire society come to life: prejudice, intrafamilial politics and all. Set in Buckland, it focuses on Bilbo and a young Frodo, but also depicts many hobbits drawn from the genealogies in the LotR appendices. This thoughtful novel-length story is one of the very few to treat hobbits as the complex and not entirely benign adults that Tolkien wrote.

02:10 am Twist of Fate by Anne, NC-17
Fandom: OZ
Pairing: Beecher/Keller
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] tobyfan
Author Website: Anne's Fanfic Pages
Why this must be read: This is an AU, wherein Toby never went to Oz but meets Chris for the first time on the outside. The setting may not be canon but the characterizations are. This is perhaps one of the few fics that capture the voices of Chris and Toby (another would be Rough Trade by [livejournal.com profile] dargie) perfectly. This story takes us through what would have happened to the Chris/Toby relationship if it is taken out of the claustrophobic confines of Oz. Will they still get together? Would it have worked out? Read on and find out.

07:21 am Linked by Belatrix (PG)
Fandom: BLAKE'S 7
Pairing: Avon/Blake, but only theoretically
Author on LJ: http://www.livejournal.com/users/astrogirl2/
Author Website: http://www.sdc.org/~ragan/
Why this must be read: Pure angst, starts at the moment when Avon shoots Blake in the show's last episode and provides, IMO, the only possible happy ending which is completely consistent with canon. Like many a Belatrix fic, this is so condensed, so distilled, that quotation would ruin it; you need to read the whole thing from beginning to end (which doesn't take long), use a box of tissues and then go back for another wallow.

09:48 am Illusions series by Rhienelleth (NC-17)
Hello, this is [livejournal.com profile] manada, and I'll be your Alias supplier this month. Just an FYI, I'm a Sarkney fan, so most of my recs will have that slant. So without further ado...

Fandom: ALIAS
Pairing: Sark/Sydney (aka Sarkney)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] rhienelleth
Author Website: rhien elleth ... right here, right now
Why this must be read:

The first fic in this series was my introduction to Alias fanfiction. Looking back, I think I was finally prompted to look for Sark/Sydney fic by their interaction in 2.4 Dead Drop (the Russian military proposition). It was one of very few Sark/Sydney stories available at the time, and lucky for all concerned, it's wonderful. This is most definitely AU, written long before we knew Sark's first name, long before we knew his lineage, long before...a lot of things. But it's still at the top of my favorites list.

He reached out and picked it up, went to slide it into a pocket of his suit, and realized at that moment that his Armani was likely ruined. Feathers and blood stains clung to his back, vestiges of his roll across the bed. He scowled. Damn it to hell.

"You tried to kill me." Even to him, the words sounded almost petulantly accusing. "And after I did you a favor."

"A favor?" Her eyes widened with incredulity. "Is that what you call it? I call it butting in where you're not wanted." She shrugged, a quick movement of her shoulders that abruptly, inexplicably, made him aware of every inch of the athletic, lithe body pressed beneath him. "Besides," she continued coolly, "I recall several occasions when you've tried to kill me, Mr. Sark."

He leaned forward deliberately, until he was close enough to feel her breath on his skin, to watch his tickle the hair at the nape of her neck as he bent over her ear. He whispered, his tone deliberately sensual, his lips close enough to brush the sensitive skin of her throat as he spoke, making her shiver. "If I'd ever really tried to kill you, Sydney," he paused, listened to her breathing, pleased that it wasn't quite regular, "you'd be dead."

10:39 am Etched by Sean Smith (R)
Fandom: X-FILES
Pairing: none
Author Website: none
Why this must be read:
I'm not a big crossover fan, generally. But XF is in many ways custom-made for crossovers (who hasn't wondered what Mulder would think of all those mysterious disappearances in Sunnydale?), and Sean Smith keeps the focus on Mulder and Scully and his original characters, so a reader may not even realize that this is a crossover. (What it's a crossover with, I leave to the reader to determine *g*.)

"Etched" is a bit of a guilty pleasure for me. The prose could use a line-edit, and the overall story could be tightened up, but XF is short on sprawling epic adventures, with gunfights and explosions and last stands. This story keeps you reading past any minor infelicities for the sheer entertainment of it all. It's just so much fun, and the characters are so cute and early-season, long before Scully became brittle and Mulder became disenchanted. The characters are tough and smart, the situation desperate, and the bad guys really frelling creepy.

Etched, by Sean Smith. Set aside some time this weekend for a long entertaining read.

04:46 pm Stealing Signs by Eolivet (PG)
Fandom: CSI
Pairing: Grissom/Sara
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] eolivet
Author Website: No website, but here is all of her fic archived on grissomandsara.com.
Why this must be read:

I should take a minute to introduce myself - I'll be doing recs for January for CSI. I'm almost exclusively a Grissom/Sara shipper, so I'm most familiar with that fanfic, but I'll try to search out other recs for you. If you have any favorites from other pairings, just let me know.

And now on to the rec.

The author summarizes this fic as "Grissom and Sara and 'a beautiful game,'" a reference to a season 2 episode (Primum Non Nocere) in which Grissom refers to baseball as a beautiful game. The entire episode is something of a Holy Grail for Grissom/Sara shippers, but you don't need to see it to get this fic. (though here's a transcript if you're interested)

This fic has a quiet beauty, and manages brilliantly to capture Grissom and Sara's voices and interactions. It's Grissom as mentor and Sara as pupil, but still as equals, and you get the sense that on another level, it's Sara as mentor and Grissom as pupil.

It's also a personal favorite, and a fic I've found myself reading again and again - and I don't even *like* baseball, so that ought to tell you something.

Enjoy!

11:31 pm Gundam Wing: fandom summary (plus anime fandom basics)
Hi!

I'm your friendly neighborhood small fandom pusher for this month, and I'm going to pimp Gundam Wing to you.

If you're new to anime fandoms, GW is one of the two fandoms I'd recommend as a starting place, as the fandom is fairly large, there's a decent amount of fanfiction for it, and it's fairly easy to follow the fanfiction without having seen the series.

Gundam Wing is a 49 episode series, and is in itself a sideline of the Gundam series, which is all about huge fighting robots and incredibly popular in Japan. Gundam Wing is, however, an AU to the timeline of the main series with all-new characters in an all-new setup. There is also an OAV (basically a 1,5 h movie) set a year after the events of the series, and there are also several short manga releases, which mainly provide additional character background.

I'm not even going to *attempt* to summarize the whole plot, because some of the going-ons are rather confusing, and sometimes you need a chart to keep track of who's who and fighting for what side. I'm going to focus on the characters and just enough set-up and plot to make fanfiction understandable.
