On the 15th of each month we implore our fandom drivers to rec one fic that crosses over their fandom with another. (No, it is not required nor does it count against your 10 recs maximum!)

Please post crossovers in the following format:

09:54 am Cities arc by Auburn (R)
Trying to muster the enthusiasm to rec when I’m really, really disappointed in the direction the show is going right now…

Fandom: ALIAS
Pairing: Sark/Sydney (aka Sarkney)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] auburnnothenna
Author Website: Allusions
Why this must be read:

I really enjoy reading Auburn’s work – she has a nice rhythm to her writing. The first of this series is my favorite, as it stars Jack and Sark. They're stuck together in a sniper's nest, which makes for some very interesting conversation and interaction. Hee! Auburn beautifully illustrates of the depth and breadth of Irina and Jack's manipulations (well documented on the show itself) in the second story, which also has the most action of the three. The third story, which is the weakest of the three IMO, is Sydney POV.

10:39 am Total Grilling Experience by Ellen M. (PG)
Fandom: The West Wing
Pairing: CJ/Toby
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] quasiradiant
Author Website: quasiradiance
Why this must be read:

In Total Grilling Experience, Josh insists he knows how to barbecue, and Sam swears CJ and Toby are having sex while he, Josh and Donna are grocery-shopping. Continued in Cuando tu Conoces, in which we find out what, exactly, CJ and Toby were doing while the others were at the store, and concluded in Playful Banter and Lively Foreplay, in which everybody gets back together and Sam is proved right.

Ellen has a lovely, lyrical touch with prose and a good handle on the CJ/Toby dynamic, her dialogue sparkles without descending into rote Sorkinese, and her CJ is utterly fabulous. In addition to handling the CJ/Toby, we get excellent Josh-Sam-Donna banter; they sound like best old friends or siblings, totally aware of each other’s strengths, weaknesses and rhythms, sliding into the banter like it’s a favorite pair of well-worn jeans.

A quote:

"I mean, I just wish for the days when I looked like an Abercrombie model. I'm getting old here."

Donna lifted her head. She was lying stomach-down in the grass, her shirt pulled up to bare her back to he sun. "Oh, God, Sam. Can you hear that?"

"What?" Sam asked, tilting his head to listen.

"It's the world's smallest violin playing the world's saddest song," she smirked and let her head fall back onto her folded arms.

"Very funny," Sam frowned. "Very funny. Don't hate me because I'm beautiful, okay?"

"And what if I do, Sam?" she asked. "What if I detest you for the fact that you're so, so..."

"I think the word you're searching for is 'full of shit,' there, Donna," Josh said.

Donna burst into laughter, hiding her face.

Sam shrugged and sat up, his legs stretched out in front of him. "That's three words."

"Not if you use hyphens," Donna said.

"Thank you for pointing that out for us, Donna. You're a real pal," Sam said as he threw a handful of grass at her.

11:05 am A New Device is Being Tested by Makiko (R)
Fandom: FARSCAPE
Pairing:  John/Aeryn
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] sabine101
Author Website:www.grapefruithead.com/makiko/farscape.htm
Why this must be read:

Season 3, in it's darkness, in it's stories of longing and loss and really bad decisions is filled with moments where things could have shifted an inch here, and inch there, slid home instead of going off the rails. This isn't that story.

Instead it's John, left behind, lost in his head, in his ship, in space and in this universe that really has no pity left. He's stuck with Harvey, stuck with Scorpius and we're not always sure which is which. But then, neither is John.

This story is about the what happened then, and the what happened next, the ramifications of John's hubris and the lengths that Scorpius will go to in his own obsessions. And for all of that, it's no less a love story. the way love can break and bend and come back to save you, but only until you can stand on your own again.

It's also richly detailed with beautiful words, spinning images and lovely prose.

From Makiko's A new device is being tested:

Scorpius has promised him the coordinates for Earth, and it's an opportunity. Now. Now that Aeryn's left him. Make a family somewhere else. So Crichton and Harvey work on refitting the Farscape, bastardizing circuits and relays from the Charrid ship.

One night over dinner, Scorpius tells him about Braca leaving.

"She offered him things I could not," Scorpy says, and Crichton knows he means Grazer. "He is a model Peacekeeper. He deserves his new assignment." He sounds removed. Crichton nearly pities him.

"I'm sure it's nothing personal," he says, and he feels sick for saying it. "Unless it is."

"So tell me, John," Scorpius says, some days later. "Who was she? On the command carrier."

"What's it to you?"

Scorpy chuckles, hands John a couple more feet of dilax cabling. "I think I have a right to know the name of the young woman with whom we spent such a highly memorable evening."

Crichton stares at the circuit matrix, turns a few screws. "I don't think this goes here," he says, tugging a node free. "I think we need the internal circuitry live before we wire the guidance system."

Scorpius palms the leftover bolts. "You're in charge, Commander," he says. "I'm just along for the ride."

*

Spires, spines, cold steel -- not like virtual reality, he thinks, more like the Teacup ride on crack, but he's got stuff to hang on to and he's not gonna lean over the rail, hey, look, it's a movie!

And Scorpy's digging around in his mind like a dentist and he finds Crichton's third-grade girlfriend and she kisses him again with her spitty pink tongue and her freckles and Scorpy's in there, digging around with the red '63 Mustang his father never let him drive and the time he was so drunk he slept in the bushes because he didn't remember about keys and his roommate kicked him awake in the morning on his way to work and Scorpy's shuffling through high school (it's a movie, Aeryn, it's a movie, remember?) and his first job at the garage and Crichton tries not to think about Gilina tries to forget her blond hair and her round little face, tries to forget her name, sing-thinks "Scooby Dooby Doo, where are you?" instead because he can't let Scorpy have her, of all the things in his brain he can't let him have that, and Scorpy's MAD (hah! It's a movie, it's so totally a movie) which is satisfying and scary because Crichton thinks it's working and Scorpy can't find whatever it is he's looking for in there in the hot electric mush of his brain and the chair's vibrating and Scorpy's (he's in a movie and he's) leaning in real close, angry and yellow under his latex fun suit and Crichton can feel almost everything and the chair makes his heartbeat last forever with wire and needles and Crichton tries to focus on that too because he won't let this happen he won't get her and Scorpius is saying things but Crichton might be deaf because it just sounds like a hiss (it's a movie it's a movie) --

And he must have done something right because Scorpius doesn't get Gilina and she lives for a whole five arns more before she dies.

01:31 pm Ash Wednesday by Firerose (PG)
Fandom: BLAKES 7
Pairing: Avon/OFC
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] espresso_addict
Author Website: Espresso Central
Why this must be read: Partly because it knocks on the head the stupid notion that "original female character = Mary Sue = rubbish". There is a very strong original female character at the centre of this. So what? It works. As does the original setting, and the sequel plot. Why should an original character be any less available than an original plot or setting to an author who sees a use for one?
Despite the "pairing", this post-Gauda Prime fic is very much about Avon coming to terms with his relationship with the dead Blake. As such, it's typical of the nostalgia and regret that pervade this fandom, but you don't often get this amount of plot into the bargain. Nor such a sense of place:

"The first few hundred metres of descent from the farm had proved the hardest. As Avon had guessed, Zenia was agile over the hill terrain, and she had led them steeply downhill, sure-footed among the bare rocks rendered frictionless by a thin coating of precipitation. At lower altitudes, the dense forest canopy effectively suppressed the undergrowth, making for relatively comfortable passage, and the thick layer of needles underfoot damped all sound of their passing. The smooth trunks and regular radial branches of the coniferous giants seemed to form a living equivalent to the elaborate network of metal pillars and struts of the Dome's huge central meeting area, and their dank drippings were not so dissimilar from its humid recycled atmosphere. But nothing had prepared him for the cobwebs of grey moss, disfiguring every tree, their exuberant growth unchecked in this unnaturally sparse ecosystem."

04:25 pm Old Shoes For New Feet by tahlia (PG)
Fandom: WITHOUT A TRACE
Pairing: Sam/Martin, Sam/Jack
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] daygloparker
Author Website: My Muse Wears Prada
Why this must be read:

I realize I've already recced tahlia's gen Sam fic (although it doesn't seem to have made it into Memories), but I can't let the month go by without pointing you toward her Sam/Martin fic. Admittedly, I am not a Sam/Martin fan. I have a lot of trouble seeing them ever working, but their 'flirtation', as it were, is canon, and therefore has to be dealt with in a lot of fic involving other pairings, both canonical and not.

This fic takes a look at the 'date' Sam and Martin went on post-"The Bus", and shows us all the reasons why Sam and Martin really couldn't work. The timing, the complications with Jack, their personality differences...the list goes on. So I suppose this is more of an anti-Sam/Martin rec, but it's a realistic, in-character look at both of them, and it's a really well-written fic. tahlia's got an excellent handle on Sam, and I think she does her more justice than any other writer I've read to date.

08:45 pm Lonely Men by Alison Nixon (PG-13)
Fandom: CSI
Pairing: Grissom/Sara
Author on LJ: not that I know of
Author Website: again, not that I know of; archive on g&s.com
Why this must be read:

They say that everyone's got their kinks: mine is long. Anything over 15,000 words, I'll read, no matter how bad.

Thankfully, "Lonely Men" is good. Really, really good. It's not a romance - it starts out as more of a friendship and UST story, set behind the episodes in the second half of season 2. In its original version, it didn't even deviate from canon, and then Alison added an epilogue that brings it sharply AU. It's included in this version, and quite frankly, I prefer it with the epilogue. It brings full circle something that could have been done very easily on the show.

It's also mostly in Grissom's head, which is incredibly hard to do. His character seems to have become more and more inscrutable as the show goes on, and for a fic writer to be able to delve so deeply into his dreams and fears and have it ring true is very rare.

And on top of all that, it's beautifully written. So, enjoy.

Summary: He had said and done enough to keep her for now. What more was there to want?

Snippet: Who was he, after all, to tempt fate? The problem was not merely philosophical — surely the pressing of one’s luck was best left to men far more adventurous than he. Besides, what he said to her the other night had been fateful enough. The memory brought something close to a smile to his lips. No simple matter, talking to a woman about beauty. Telling her she was beautiful would have been simple. Telling her she had opened his eyes to the existence of beauty was...not.

10:40 pm Unspoken by Lady J (PG)
Fandom: STARGATE SG-1
Pairing: Sam/Daniel
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] divagypsy
Author Website: daydream believers

Why this must be read: Sam/Daniel is my favorite Stargate pairing. But it's not a terribly popular pairing, so the stories are somewhat limited. When a story like Lady J's Unspoken comes along, it goes on my must read and re-read list

But that's why I should read it.

You should read it because it's a wonderful story about Daniel who came back just a little different and Sam who's trying to figure him out. It's a downtime story, and takes place between missions. The author takes the chance to write the characters as people and shows them dealing with the little things like furniture shopping that tie to the bigger things like Daniel coming back from a higher plane. Daniel and Sam's characters are spot on. And on top of that it's a fun read.
