12:27 am Drivers Wanted
Reccers are needed for February and beyond in the Everwood and X-Men: Comicverse fandoms. Click the links to volunteer.

And hey, if you joined [livejournal.com profile] crack_van as a member and haven’t already done so, please sign up to make recs in your fandoms. It will go much easier on you if we don’t have to drag you from your homes!

FYI, Trekkers (or Trekkies, as the case may be), rather than beg for volunteers each month in each of the fandoms, I’ve consolidated them all into a single Star Trek Franchise category. Sign up once and rec fics for any of the shows, from Classic to Enterprise.

And last, but not least, January reccers: Thank you for playing! Your posting access will expire on February 1st, so please make sure you have all your recs in under the wire. And don’t forget to sign up here. Your stalker will be mailed to you within 7-10 business days.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

12:28 am The Miracle Worker by Mere G. (PG-13)
Fandom: ROSWELL
Pairing: Max/Valenti
Author on LJ: n/a
Author Website: n/a
Why this must be read:

I always thought of Jim Valenti as sort of the 'Giles' of Roswell-- if Giles had spent the entire first season trying to hunt Buffy down like a dog. Later on, Valenti realized that the alien kids of Roswell needed his help more than they needed to be exposed and dissected, and being an honorable man, he then became their protector and supporter. He was a brave man, a devoted father, but still flawed and very human, and I feel that he's a neglected character in Roswell 'fic. Pairing aside, though, this story sends shivers up my spine with its deft and delicate unpinning of Jim's backstory.

I suppose this story doesn't make a lot of sense. There should have been warning signs, or some kind of vague foreshadowing. I should have noticed Max the first time I saw him and not known exactly why, or I should have had a crush on a dark-eyed kid back in high school, or I should have always been fixated on aliens. I should have realized something was off. But I think any of that would just have diminished what is now.

This link leads to an archived copy of the story. If anyone knows where Mere's personal fic page is currently, or if she has an LJ, please let me know.

08:19 am From Forever To Forever by Quatre-sama (R)
Fandom: GUNDAM WING
Pairing: Quatre/Silvia Noventa, Quatre/Trowa (other non-yaoi couples in the background)
Author on LJ: n/a
Author Website: Maguanac Headquarters
Why this must be read:

Because it's a rather untypical Trowa/Quatre story.

Trowa is in love with Quatre, but before he has a chance to tell him, Quatre - pretty much out of the blue - marries Silvia Noventa (a minor female character from the series). The story deal with how Trowa deals with this, his changing relationship with Quatre (and Silvia), and spans several years.

Also includes other background non-yaoi pairings (and is Relena-friendly).

01:09 pm "Swords at Sunset: The Duke's Reward" by Shalott (NC-17)
Fandom: HIGHLANDER
Pairing: Duncan/Methos
Author on LJ:[livejournal.com profile] astolat
Author website:http://www.intimations.org/fanfic/#highlander

Why this must be read:
“Swords at Sunset” is an alternate universe not only for Highlander canon, but also for history in general. Shalott deftly uses the Kalas arc which brought Duncan and Methos together on the actual series to cause their meeting here as well. However, this time they meet before Duncan has had his first death, while he’s still living with his family in Scotland. I won’t tell you about the twist on history. I’ll let you see for yourself, but trust me, you will love it.

My last few recs have been a little on the angst-y side, but this one is a pure delight. It’s sexy, funny, fun! And talk about your hot first times. Woo! The sex in this story really packs a punch.

If the beginning seems a little odd to you just keep reading. Once you are into it you will be so glad you did. The only thing wrong with this story is that there isn’t more of it. Enjoy!

03:03 pm The Camper’s Tale by Caroline (PG-13)
Fandom: X-Men Movieverse
Pairing: general (may be considered Logan/original character?)
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: unknown

Why this must be read: This is a really great story with a very interesting, very unique twist. It is archived on a Logan and Marie shipper website, but that relationship only starts near the end of the story.

The story focuses on a very different sort of relationship. It also provides a bit of a back story (prior to X1) for Logan. And, it shows that Logan is really a big old softie at heart, with a capacity for being extremely good to anyone, or anything, that comes into his life!

05:42 pm Rain by jjblazer (NC-17)
Fandom: X-Men Movieverse
Pairing: Logan/Marie
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] jjblazer
Author Website: blazeplace

Why this must be read: JJ writes AU epics. Incredible AU epics. And, this one is a particulare favorite of mine. It was one of her first and I think one of her best.

I love the smut. I love the great job she does in setting up the interpersonal relationsips. I love the original characters. I think the story does an amazing job of analyzing Logan’s mental state. And Marie is a strong, vibrant character that can take care of herself and is really good at taking care of others.

Although the X-Men show up in the end to help save the day, Logan and Marie decide not to join them. That’s a recurring theme in JJ’s stories. It’s refreshing to see someone put a different “spin” on the X-Men organization, and, in fact, the whole X-Men “ideal.” And, I always find her stories thought provoking because of it.

I guess that’s the reason I’m hooked. She always has a story in progress, and I’m always eagerly awaiting the next chapter!

07:33 pm The Revenge of Lord Vodkamort (PG-13)
Fandom: HARRY POTTER
Pairing: Ron Weasley / Hermione Granger & Ginny Weasley / Harry Potter
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] lizbee
Author Website: Mirror Dance
Why this must be read:

Because on the one hand it's a hilarious, witty comedy featuring a carnivorous wardrobe and a Hung!Over! Harry with a disturbing spork obsession. Yet on the other hand it's perfectly characterised and strangely plausible. As if Rowling suddenly decided to switch genres to an updated P.G. Wodehouse sort of thing. Did I mention it's hilarious?

It is a truth universally acknowledged that any story that opens by paraphrasing Jane Austen will be found guilty of attempted irony. It may contain wit, social commentary, or brooding young men of good family and great wealth, or all of the above and a dashing rake to boot.

Yes. This one, too.

Wait. Hold the dashing rake.

Let's try that again.

07:34 pm Splendor in the Grass by Midnight Caller (PG-13)
Fandom: CSI
Pairing: Grissom/Sara
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] chili_powda
Author website: archive on g&s.com

Why this must be read:

It's Grissom and Sara bonding over science and over their reclusiveness, with deft characterizations and smooth dialogue. It's a situation we've all been in at one time or another: just lying back and looking up at the stars, pondering the universe, and Midnight Caller very nicely interpets it through the lens of the two Geeks.

And I'm a sucker for good summaries; this fic's is "Catherine throws a party. Too bad it sucks."

"You alright there, Grissom?" One of the joke-tellers slapped him on the back. "You need another drink!"

"Good idea," he smiled politely, and slipped out of the circle, pushing his way through the crowd. Catherine had too many friends, and most of them were in his path to another beer. When he finally reached the fridge he yanked open the door and pulled out a longneck. He popped the cap and took a long gulp. Oh, the sweet nectar of forced social situations.
