Why this must be read:
A common theme in Highlander fiction is to ask how Mac and Methos can become friends again after all the hurt and betrayal surrounding the revelation of Methos’ violent past as one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse. I have a particular fondness for stories wherein Duncan is the one to reach out, and “Stonecutters” is a classic of that genre. This story has a lovely quiet intensity between Methos and Duncan, lovely poetic language, and Tasselby has a wonderful way with misunderstandings. This is a Methos that I can really believe in, a Methos who is often blinded to reality by his own jaded expectations.

Last, but never least, the sex in this story is really, really hot. It’s tender and passionate and real. There’s a moment at the end that just destroys me with its combined hotness and sweetness.

And there’s a sequel:

Fandom: OZ
Pairings: Beecher/Keller

Why this must be read: Because angst is so inherent in the OZ fandom, it's hard to find a writer who will put a humorous spin on the events that transpired inside Em City. But there are a few that stand out...like this one, where Chris and Toby discuss the sexual orientation of the newest hack, Claire Howell.

This one is written like a script guide, where it's mostly dialogue with a few "stage directions" scattered throughout the fic. The writer nail the two well; flyboy captures the snippiness of Toby and the sexy crassness of Chris, creating quick and funny banter between the two men. They may not have shown the lighter moments of this couple on HBO but you could probably believe that this happened. Maybe.

Why this must be read:

This is a short, creepy, slice of late season 4. Cordelia's back. Cordelia has her memory back. Happy times, right? Wrong - Cordelia is also massively pregnant, and very, very evil.

Victoria said this was inspired by an idle comment someone made comparing Cordelia to Shelob - and let me assure you, as your brain boggles, that yeah, she is that evil. But there's a little something more - a vicious, barbed fishook jab just waiting for you.

04:22 pm Flowers by kyrdwyn (G)
Fandom: CSI
Pairing: none
Author on LJ: (if applicable) [livejournal.com profile] kyrdwyn
Author Website: stories archived here
Why this must be read:

It's somewhat rare to find a CSI story without any pairing whatsoever; my personal theory on that has to do with the fact that the show isn't really about the characters. It's about the science. So the fanfic tends to fill in the gaps left by the show.

It's also depressingly hard to find CSI casefile fic, but that's a rant for another day.

"Flowers" is a charming little story that shows Grissom and Catherine's friendship, and a side of Grissom the show doesn't delve into nearly enough. He's not all science geek and antisocial recluse. Kyrdwyn does a nice job of bringing that out in a way that's more subtle than most writers would handle it.

Why this must be read: This imagines that Vila survives the massacre at Gauda Prime, only to be imprisoned and interrogated. All you need to know is that he was first a member of the crew on the spaceship Liberator, then of a slightly different crew on Scorpio. And he has been, for a lot of the time, afraid, the butt of jokes and has never had it easy, but looking back on earlier times in his life, anything seems better than where he is now… This is one of those very intense, short fics one shouldn't quote from; every word needs to be read in just that order. It's a heart-tugger if you like Vila (who wouldn't?) but not in the least sentimental, just realistic and bleak. It also proves there is good writing on fanfiction.net, if you look hard enough….

Fandom: OZ

Why this must be read: This is all about Toby and his fascination with the complex man that was both his tormentor and savior in Oz. He loves him but he isn't blind (well, not anymore) to his lover's flaws. But ultimately this is an ode to him, as Toby revels in the sights, the smells...the experience that is Chris Keller.
