12:39 pm Ship Building by Jess (NC-17)
Fandom: THE X-FILES
Pairing: Mulder/Scully
Author on LJ: none
Author Website: none

Why this must be read: This is a long, satisfying, angsty, shippy case file. Heh, that "shippy" turns out to be a pun, as the "ship building" of the title is both literal and figurative. In the days after Millennium, the episode that gave us our first Mulder/Scully kiss, Scully is called to Seattle to work on a serial murder case, and Mulder's left behind to chase a few ships of his own.

Jess is perhaps best known for her smut-writing abilities, which are formidable, but this fic gives us the best of all worlds: sex, romance, angst, and plot. Not necessarily in that order.

"Scully!" he called and ran forward, catching her at the edge of the gate. She dropped her carry-on and waited for him to touch her, to pick her up and kiss her hard, which he did. Her mouth opened and for a moment he felt her tongue touch his, and then he was setting her down, red-faced and glassy-eyed. "Stay safe," he said.

"Call me a lot," she answered and then she was gone, walking briskly till she disappeared around the corner into the belly of the plane.

He waited a moment, then dialed the number on his cell phone.

"Not this soon," she laughed into his ear.

02:47 pm Pravda by Thorne (PG-13)
Fandom: ALIAS
Pairing: none
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] akathorne
Author Website: http://www.geocities.com/thorne06/
Why this must be read: Amidst the overwhelming plethora of Sydney/Vaughn fics that were written and posted after the Season 1 finale, it was nice to find this simple yet emotionally packed story that dealt with Sydney's feelings upon opening her eyes and seeing her mother before her.

Thorne deftly takes you into Sydney's mind as Irina's surprise reappearance in her life makes her deal with anger, sadness, and hope. I love how well Thorne sets up each emotion, first giving us Sydney's surface emotion, and then quickly darting underneath to show us what Syd's really feeling:
Thoughts burn through me, caustic fury wells inside me. (Waited? For what? Where have you been, Mom? Why did you leave?)

She steps into the light, and the world tilts sickeningly. She has changed, but not so much that I can’t see the woman who packed my lunch and sent me off to school twenty-two years ago.

My mother (my mother is dead; that is Irina), paces toward me, slowly, her eyes hungrily studying my face.

I am so afraid of this woman.

And the ending ... Man, the relevation Sydney has at the end of the story is heartbreaking. I still hold hope that the show will one day give us the self-aware and flawed Sydney that Thorne has painted.

04:26 pm Stopover by Gryph (PG-13)
Fandom: KNIGHT RIDER
Pairing: Umm... you know, it's too confusing to get into. Let's just say it's GEN, okay?
Author on LJ: n/a
Author Website: The Fanfic Vault

Why this must be read:

"Stopover" is, frankly, somewhat weird. Which makes it all the more amazing, in that Gyrph actually manages to pull such an outrageous concept off and still have it make sense. A sort of side-shoot to her Fire & Ice AU series, "Stopover" also delves into another author's AU series. It is, in fact, a strange hybrid of two KR/TKR alternate universes. Gryph strongly recommends you read her story "Nemesis" prior to reading this one; although it is not necessary to have previously read [livejournal.com profile] rusti_knight's series, as Gryph does a fair job of introducing them. However, if "Stopover" happens to leave you with an interest in Rusti's characters and universe, please don't hesitate to drop by LadyWolf's Garage to sate your curiosity. I'm sure it'll be worth it! :)

Either way, I've gotta give this story kudos if only for the difficulty rating Gryph must have had in writing it. The scenario alone is... well, if you're a fan of sci-fi, you're gonna love this. And that Gryph made it work -- and did so believably? Damn, that woman has talent!

07:56 pm Palimpsest by Purna (NC-17)
Fandom: DUE SOUTH

Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski

Author on LJ: n/a

Author Website:Purna's Fiction

Why this must be read: This is an AU that should define all au's. I love the characterizations in this. Ray is so very very Ray. And Fraser? You could just eat him up! I love the way she keeps Fraser's slight awkardness and Ray's easy acceptance of it. Purna places our boys in Canada doing what they do best. Being a duet.

Quote : As I was arranging the maps clipped onto the lap board Ray handed me, he rooted around in his jacket pockets.

"Lose something?" I asked.

"Nah, got 'em right here." Ray pulled out a pair of eyeglasses with chunky black plastic frames from an inner pocket and slipped them on. With a rueful smile, he admitted, "Don't see too good without the old B.C. glasses. Wouldn't want to have a blind pilot, would we?"

"B.C. glasses?"

"Yeah, you know, birth control. Downtown geeksville, I can tell you, really wows the roughnecks down at the Boot."

I spoke without thinking. "On the contrary, they're quite fetching." I felt a flush creep up my face, but Ray merely looked at me, a dubious expression on his face.

"You're kidding me, right?"

"Certainly not. They look fine." The pitch of my voice wavered a little; I cleared my throat.

It was true. Ray's glasses would have been unflattering on anyone else, but somehow they only made him look younger and appealingly bookish.

Ray shook his head, but he was smiling. "Don't take this wrong, but you're a freak, you know that?" He pulled on his headphones.

I paused, wavering between offense and amusement. Then I smiled. "Understood."

08:26 pm Cabbages and Queens by Jennifer-Oksana (PG-13)
Fandom: ANGEL
Pairing: None; Andrew, Lorne
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] jennyo
Author Website: I'm Just Sayin'

Why this must be read:
Here's another Lorne fic, but this one is double the fun because it has Andrew, too. Utterly snarky dialogue and great humor abound. Implied slash.

Fandom: CSI
Pairing:  Grissom/Catherine friendship
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] smut_queen
Author Website:Chasing Rabbits

Why this must be read: There's a lot of Grissom/Catherine friendship fic out there but this one takes a different look at both characters and their friendship. Set after Lady Heather's Box, Grissom visits Catherine at home after Eddies death.

In this story unlike others, Catherine is painted a little harsher than normal, a little harder. She's struggling to cope with Eddie's death and what this means for her and Lindsey. This Catherine isn't crying her self to sleep, she's lashing out at herself and Grissom.

Grissom, on the ither hand. is typically portrayed as sort of clueless and struggling to deal with Catherine and her emotions, this one is different because you can see the struggle going on while not being in Grissom's point of view.

While this isn't how I would typically write their friendship, it's a valid choice and it makes me hurt seeing them this way. Sometimes that's exactly the type of fic you need.

11:28 pm Male Pride by Creed Cascade (NC-17)
Fandom: THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS
Pairing: Brian/Dom
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] creedcascade
Author's Website: Open Air Insane Asylum
Why this must be read:

If you've ever tried to randomly search for TFATF fic, you know how often the typical scenario pops up. Dom shows up post-movie, growls a bit, and Brian swoons and falls into his arms, the end. This story has the author purposely flipping that cliche, and making Dom sing for his supper. Fun and smut ensues.

"You hit me," he muttered.

"What were you expecting, asshole!" Brian hissed. "Were you expecting me to throw myself onto the closest piece of furniture and start weeping?"

"No..." Dom answered. "I would've settle for, 'Hi Dom'."
