08:40 am Thirty by Synchronik (r-ish)
Fandom: POPSLASH-NSYNC
Pairing: Lance/Chris
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] synchronik
Author Website: Joe's Eats and Christian Bookshop

Why this really should be read:

There's a number of us who first read popslash because of Puppies In A Box - the website that had Helen's stories, and Sinead's and Cecilia's and Synchronik's. This story is centered around two events: Chris turning thirty in October 2001 and the premiere of Lance's movie, On The Line, which tanked. And it's a love story of much sweetness and feeling involving my absolute least favorite intra-sync pairing, but I love the story and reread it often. As with many authors I've rec'ed this month, you can't kick it old skool and not read Synchronik. Also, based around the lyrics to the amazingly catchy and astonishingly lame I Need Love, yet so much much better than the song.

01:13 pm Shadows and Tall Trees by Sasjah Miller (NC-17)
Fandom: LORD OF THE RINGS
Pairing: Aragorn/Legolas
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] zasjah
Author Website: Arandur Mine
Why this must be read:

Just when you thought it didn't exist, here it is: a very believable and sexy Aragorn/Legolas story. It fits into canon and respects who the characters are without diminishing them (or others) in any way.

(Check out this author's web site for some lovely Aragorn/Boromir stories, too.)

06:14 pm Naked by the Mad Poetess (NC-17)
Fandom: ANGEL
Pairing: Lindsey/Oz
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] mpoetess
Author Website: Pointy Stakes

Why this must be read:
The Lindsey voice is so very in-character, and the on-the-road setting is right for both characters, who both have that urge to wander. Unsentimental and hot, with a dash of darkness to add spice, this is a short read, but you'll savor every bit.

06:41 pm The Aesthetic of the Mistake by Lalejandra (PG-13)
Fandom: THE O.C.
Pairing: Summer/Various, mention of Seth/Ryan
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] lalejandra
Author Website: None that I know of
Why this must be read: I began the month with a trio of Anna-focused stories by Lalejandra, and once she wrote this Summer piece, I knew I had to close out the month with it. Summer wasn’t featured in the closing montage of The Ties That Bind, but one has to imagine that Seth’s sail into the sunset would have affected her profoundly. In this story, Summer flees to a refuge of her very own – Anna’s home in Pittsburgh. Summer goes on a journey where the steps aren't large, but the effect on her is huge.

An excerpt:

All this means that while it comes as kind of a surprise when Anna says, “Seth is gone, Ryan’s gone, and Marissa is being a bitch, right? So come here,” it’s not totally out of left field. You’d think Summer had joined the Communist party and given away all her worldly possessions (did they still do that?) the way Coop reacted. And Summer’s parents. And—well, that was it, wasn’t it? Summer could have taken the car and gone to see Ryan in Chino to tell him and see how he reacted, but that would require going to Chino, and Summer just wasn’t willing to sacrifice.

I’m off to the Outer Banks tomorrow for the Memorial Day weekend, so this is my last recommended story for the month. I have hopes that I’ll witness cute high school boys fighting on the beach, and one of them will utter, “Welcome to the O.B., bitch!”

I hope you’ve enjoyed some of my favorites among the many talented fanfiction writers for The O.C..

07:11 pm black eyes, Zara Hemla (PG13)
Fandom: Pirates of the Carribean
Pairing: Gen
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] zarahemla
Author’s Website: If: Multifandom Fic by Zara Hemla
Why this must be read:

Jack Sparrow’s appearance was one of the more memorable things from the movie: braids and beads and kohl, and early in the fandom, writers seemed to be having a fine time coming up with the whys and hows of Jack’s particular style. Zara Hemla’s version involves Trinidad, whores and most importantly of all, the line: “Am I very pretty?”

Jack was the reason I fell in love with Pirates of the Caribbean and his voice and attitude in any story is vital to my appreciation of said story. The Jack in “black eyes” is young, but he already has down the unflappable attitude that will later see him through cursed enemies and near-hanging.

At twenty-four, Jack is boy enough to be charming and man enough not to care that a whore is painting his eyelids green. This is his fifth voyage to Trinidad, and he is very broke and very, very drunk. He can't quite remember how this whole conversation got started, but he's willing enough to go along. Especially with Nancy perching so precariously on his lap that he can feel the button on her garter digging into his thigh.

07:29 pm Of Shackles and the Sun, Nix (PG)
Fandom: Pirates of the Carribean
Pairing: Will/Elizabeth, Jack
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] nilchance
Author’s Website: On the Outside
Why this must be read:

Nix has one of the better Jack voices I’ve had the pleasure to read: unique and quirky and damned funny, without being overdone and so filled with faux-pirate slang as to be incomprehensible. While I adore her Jack, Will and Elizabeth are equally well-drawn here. While I don’t believe that it makes sense, Will and/or Elizabeth going pirate is a common idea in PoTC fandom, and this story handles it well.

The organ rang out, loud enough to make the window behind Jack rattle. He grabbed at a handhold, blinked, and tipped his hat to the Virgin for the help. Had she been anything other than pressed glass, that grab might have significantly changed her status in the church.

Title: Danse de l'inconscient by Binky (NC-17)
Fandom: Star Wars Franchise
Author: Binky (BinkyTorture@ikillclowns.com)
Author website: unknown
Author on lj: unknown
Pairing: Obi-Wan/Qui-Gon
Rating: NC-17
Why this must be read:

The summary goes something like this: The boys are grumpy after a string of tough missions, and get packed off to another Temple and that's exactly what happens. Except that the Temple in question is on a lovely tropical planet where the general idea is to kick back and relax. Although Obi-Wan is terribly in favour of it, Qui-Gon nobly suffers through the sun, sea and sand in the same manner of someone being asked to holiday in the Death Star. Added to this, they are both convinced that their interest in the other is sadly one-sided.

I adore this story. I've read it over and over again and it never fails to make me giggle. The pov switches between Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon and Binky has a sly poke at both of them while capturing their characters perfectly. I adore Holiday Obi-Wan and Grumpy Qui-Gon and I especially like how something that Obi-Wan comments on is then reflected in the following Qui-Gon pov and vice versa. The tone is light and humourous but there is a freshness to this story which rewards rereading.

Highly reccommended.

Big hairy mort that he is, my Master much prefers cooler climes to the tropics. He'll spend every second of his spare time in quarters, reading his damn books and complaining loudly to anyone who'll listen--namely me--about how hot and sticky it is and why can't they adjust the circulators to a more civilized temperature? I believe he would actually prefer a mission to Hoth over this one. )

10:26 pm Dibs by Grey (NC-17)
Fandom: DUE SOUTH
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski
Author on LJ: n/a
Author Website: Grey's Corner
Why this must be read: [livejournal.com profile] vamplover84 reminded me about this fic. I read it awhile back and had forgotten how awesome it was. So, [livejournal.com profile] vamplover84 this is for you!!

I love the way Grey writes Fraser. She makes him seem so real. Like you could walk around the corner and find him arguing with Dief. I love that. Ray comes across with all his snarkiness intact but with a neediness that you will be hard pressed to find with other authors.

The third crash from the hallway brought Fraser to his feet and to the door of his office. "Turnbull, what seems to be the problem?"

Constable Turnbull looked up sheepishly as he lay on the floor and held up his feather duster like a small, trusty sword. "I'm sorry, sir. The ladder became unbalanced at the most critical point of the operation."

Fraser thought the ladder wasn't the only thing unbalanced.

Fraser immediately chided himself for his uncharitable thoughts and blamed Ray for his recent round of cynicism. His time with Ray made him much more prone to an expression of negativity than he ever had been before. Though to be fair, he really didn't need Ray to influence his opinion of his often hapless colleague.

Stella in this is smart, witty and observant. This story encompasses everything due South should be.

11:01 pm Animism by Julia (PG)
Fandom: KNIGHT RIDER
Pairing: Implied Michael/Kitt -- m/m SLASH
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author Website: Unknown

Why this must be read:

It's short, it's slashy, and it's almost poetic. With a concept that's different from anything else anyone's ever conceived of, "Animism" is a breath of fresh air. The first time I read it, I was amazed no one had ever mentioned such an idea before because the way Julia describes it, it feels so right, so perfect, that I couldn't imagine feeling anything else. Heck, it made me rethink my entire perspective -- it was just so... intimate. Mmm, it might only be PG-rated, but it's almost more romantic than many NC-17 fics. I adore it, and wish I could I find more written by this author. ::sigh::
