12:22 pm Whores and Thieves by Eleanor K (NC-17)
Hello everyone! I'm Kellygirl and I'll be showing you around the Firefly Fandom this month. I hope I rec something that the new and the seasoned reader can enjoy. Even though I lean towards slash, I plan to rec other types of stories too. All kinds of stories for an ever growing fandom.

I thought I might have a problem finding enough stories but actually I found too many, which was great. Now on to the story:

Fandom: FIREFLY
Pairing: Simon/Mal
Author on LJ: Emungere
Author Website: ConsequenceFree
Why this Must be read:

I decided on this story because it's a well done Alternate Universe tale and I'm a sucker for one of those. The characters remain similar, but their situations are different. I like the turn of this story and how it shows Simon still being the protective big brother.

Mal and Simon meet and sparks fly along with some angst, some thievery and some rescuing on the parts of both.

The man was standing close, but not too close. Even so, the height difference wasn't something Simon could ignore. Nor were the eyes. Tired blue in a weathered face. The creases around them suggested not age, but pain.

"I'm glad to hear it. I wouldn't want you to put yourself out." He didn't try to stop the smile this time.

The man looked him up and down with a little twist of his mouth. "I could say something about putting out, given your line of work, but I've been told recently I should learn to keep my big mouth shut."

"Does it show?" Did he have it stamped on his forehead?

"A little. The way you talk, the way you move. Surprised to see a Companion in a place like this, though."

"It's a nice enough place." He doesn't have to fake the smile that says the place is nice enough because of the company. He held out his hand. "I'm Simon Tam."

02:08 pm Shelter by Melusina (PG)
Fandom: PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN
Pairing: Jack/Norrington, some Will/Elizabeth
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] fabu
Author's Website: n/a
Why this must be read:

This is a gorgeous short piece written for the Norrington Ficathon in March. It's angsty and sweet without being syrupy or OOC. The twist at the end is rather fabulous too.

07:40 pm Absolutely Beautiful by Sary (PG)
Fandom: THE WEST WING
Pairing: None
Author on LJ: N/A
Author Website: Wednesday Night Rants
Why this must be read:

Hello! I'm willa, and I'll be your happy West Wing fic reccer for the month of June. I'm a Josh/Donna girl at heart, so the stories I rec here will most likely fall into that category. However, I'll read just about anything, and often find myself surprised at what I like when I give other pairings and situations a chance. I am a sucker for character-driven pieces, like, for instance...

"Absolutely Beautiful" by Sary. This is a post-ep for "Galileo" - this author does BRILLIANT post-ep stories - set during the interactive classroom. It provides quick insight into all of the staffers, what they're thinking while Bartlet teaches kids about Mars, how their minds wander when left to their own devices. I love all of these characters so much, and this story does a great job of capturing little pieces of them. The author weaves it all together by having the staffers interrupt each other's private musings, so that the POV is passed to each like a baton in a relay race. Plus, the dialog is spot on, like this little bit:

"Green beans," Josh whispered.

Sam turned to face him. "Excuse me?"

"I was just thinking about the green beans."

"Why?"

"I don't know."

"Okay."

"You know how sometimes thoughts just get stuck on your brain and you can't move on?"

"Josh, there's no reason to be thinking about the green beans."

"No, I know, I'm just --"

"Just -- thinking about the green beans anyway."

Josh shrugged. "I'm kind of hungry," he admitted. Sam smiled and turned away.

08:39 pm Hissy Fits and Barbarians by Leah (PG)
Fandom: STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE
Pairing: Tucker/Reed
Author on LJ: no
Author e-mail: maching_monkey@hotmail.com
Author Website: coffeeslash | Leah
Why this must be read: Trip, Malcolm, and large, hairy, exuberant aliens, i.e. the Glorious Same-Same Speakers. A funny and charming little fic. Leah has a wonderful light touch with both Malcolm and Trip, (along with marvelous characterizations) as they try their best to communicate with a very alien alien. This little vignette exemplifies the kind exploration and discovery that I love about Trek. And there's a more involved sequel, (Persnickety in the Underworld) where the Speakers return, and Cheetah brings fruit, for Malcolm. (It's linked to on the Hissy Fits page).

09:08 pm Off-Kilter by Qlara (NC-17)
Fandom: STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE
Pairing: Tucker/Reed
Author on LJ: no
Author e-mail: looppool@appleisp.net
Author Website: n/a
Why this must be read: This fic is a real favorite of mine. Qlara writes the best Trip-voice, ever. He's funny, smart, and capable, and so utterly delighted with Malcolm. On the surface, it's a story about some friendly aliens, who are so happy that Trip fixed their engine, that they give him a gift. And a dinner in his honor. But really, it's a clever, witty story told by Trip about his relationship with Malcolm, along with some wonderful Trek in-jokes. Especially when it comes to the gift. And I just love the imagery there.

09:38 pm Water, Ice, Snow by Kylie Lee (NC-17)
Fandom: STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE
Pairing: Archer/Reed
Author on LJ:[livejournal.com profile] kylielee1000
Author Website: Kylie Lee | Slash"
Why this must be read: Angsty, alien action/adventure. Archer and Reed, Plus a fitting farewell to a minor character. This story is told in scattered vignettes, but don't let that throw you. I absolutely love the ending. This is a beautiful fic, warm, intense, and sometimes sad. The author's summary for this fic is simply "Sacrifice. Submission." Oh yeah.
