Author on LJ: n/a
Author's Website: Abigale's Fics

Why this must be read:

Oh, dear, my month's almost up and I haven't yet reccced something hardcore slashy and sexy.

To remedy that, here's a wonderful PWP, which, in the best tradition of the genre features well-drawn and recognizable characters, a convincing, insightful portrait of a relationship, and several helpings of hot, tasty sex.

11:03 am "Echoes of an Empty Place" by CGB (PG-13)
Fandom: STARGATE SG-1
Pairing: Janet/Daniel
Author's webpage: Fanfiction by Christine
author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] mandysbitch

Why this must be read:
I love alternate timelines, and I love when canon enjoys playing with them as much as I do. In "2010," SG-1 tossed a note through the 'Gate, trying to unmake the world they knew, to undo Earth's domination by the Aschen -- and they succeeded. This is the story of Janet, in that future that's now a might-have-been - Janet feeling out of place, watching her friends' lives, and circling through a casual relationship with Daniel.

It's a quiet piece of introspection, observation, and bits of conversations - it presumes you've seen the episode, and leaves the splashy, desperate action off-screen - but is well-informed by Janet's character. The author says she was inspired by the flip little waves Daniel gives Janet, of which the good doctor herself says, "He waves to her from the balcony, a casual salute that says everything that is needed: Goodbye. It's been fun. Sorry. ... This really is the final mission, which is why it's funny that it should be her going through the wormhole."

12:32 pm "The Body Electric" by Merry (G)
Fandom: STARGATE SG-1
Pairing: none, though you can see some Jack/Daniel subtext if you want to
Author's page: anyroad
author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] merryish

Why this must be read:
SG-1's robot doubles are excellent story fodder. I was so upset at the end of "Tin Man" when it seemed the writers were going to leave this team of explorers trapped for an eternity of android immortality on Harlan's little world. Fortunately the writers did bring them back, for "Double Jeopardy," though they settled their problem by killing them off. Merry does us the ultimate favor of bringing them back to life in a short story both amusing and poignant.

She neatly negotiates around having two of everybody in the same scene and provides excellent team chemistry, especially in the Jack-and-Daniel banter department. (Is everyone noticing a theme in what I like?) It's chock-full of touching character moments - make you laugh and feel a little misty-wistful all at the same time.

05:18 pm "Tongue with no Cognates" by Tallulah Rasa (G)
Fandom: STARGATE SG-1
Pairing: none
Author's page: the Good, the Bad, and the Indeterminate
author on LJ: not that I can find

Why this must be read:

It was a real chore picking out which of Tallulah's stories I wanted to rec this month - the quiet, sad, possible future ("After Words")? The post-"Homecoming" AU ("Not")? Or how about the amusing, team-bantery, wacky two-Jacks-arguing-over-Daniel "Snow on the Equator?" I've gone with "Tongue with no Cognates," which never fails to make me smile.

It's shortly post-"Homecoming," and Daniel is still trying to figure out all the pieces of his un-remembered former life. Jack, in his usual pain-in-the-ass fashion, helps him find himself a little. It's short, it's sweet, and it's not the concrete things that matter. It's about this: )

Fandom: YAMI NO MATSUEI
Pairing: Tsuzuki/Hisoka
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author Website: Lodestar on Phantom Moon
Why this must be read:

The author's notes state that this story could possibly be considered OOC, and it's true that this is not quite Hisoka or Tsuzuki as I see them. However, it is a Tsuzuki and a Hisoka I can see, at some unspecified point in the future, when the delicate balance of their current partnership shifts, and that shift must be accounted for.

Fandom: ALIAS
Pairing: Lauren Reed/Julian Sark
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] siryn99
Author’s Website: Shimmer and Flicker
Why this must be read:

It’s hard to find good Lauren/Sark fics, nevermind good Lauren/Sark fics longer than a couple of pages. This story posits that Lauren and Sark met pre-series, and tries to explain the reasoning behind the characters’ interaction in canon through this preexisting relationship.

This is a romantic fic--with an Alias twist or two, of course!--and the author allows the relationship between Lauren and Sark to evolve slowly. A very nice read.

06:56 pm And I Am Weary, by Tahlia (PG13)
Fandom: ALIAS
Pairing: Irina/Sloane
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] daygloparker
Author’s Website: my muse wears prada
Why this must be read:

This is an interesting look at one of season three’s plot twists, and at Irina as a person. Irina, as shown in canon, was always in control, one step ahead of everyone else. Here, we are shown a younger and more vulnerable Irina--and we see how the events within this story help her to become harder and more dangerous in the years to come.

Arvin shook his head. "You're a horrible woman, Laura."

It hit her like a ton of bricks. His words stuck in the back of her throat, tasting rotten. Carefully, slowly, she raised her eyes to his, trying desperately not to look suspicious. To not see the accusation she thought she heard in his voice. Lately, things were becoming more difficult. Someone had pulled her file in Moscow.

She forced a smile. "What do you mean?"

He licked his lips, waiting for the kill. "Leaving this pie out in the open to tempt everyone."

Oh, God. The pie. She hoped she didn't look as relieved as she was, so she bowed her head, pretending to hide a small laugh.

"It's about willpower," she murmured to the countertop.

"Willpower?" By now, the dish from the refrigerator was in her hands, and she was moving toward the dining room. Her back was to him again when he spoke: "Kak dva pal'tsa obossat'!"

    She froze.

07:06 pm Salvation Payment Plan, by Shrift (PG13)
Fandom: ALIAS
Pairing: Jack/Sloane
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] shrift
Author’s Website: shrift’s fan fiction
Why this must be read:

Just take one look at the pairing info, and tell me you aren’t filled with horrified fascination. I think that I’ll just let this story speak for itself:

Arvin ignored the jibe. "You know, after Emily died, I realized something." He took a step closer, fully invading Jack's personal space, but Jack refused to let his discomfort be known. "We're close, you and I. In fact, you're probably the only person left in this world who truly knows me."

"That's... precious, really," Jack said, letting his annoyance show but eyeing Arvin warily. "I'm touched."

Arvin frowned, laugh lines curving into valleys around his mouth. "What we have is unique, Jack. Don't belittle that."

Jack could feel the warmth of Arvin's breath, and his proximity had Jack's skin prickling in reaction. Arvin was a threat, standing close enough to disable or kill, and every instinct urged him to put some distance between them. "Again, what do you think you're doing?"

"Don't be obtuse," Arvin chastised. "It doesn't suit you."

Jack didn't bother to repress his sneer. "What does suit me?"

Arvin closed the space between them, and Jack could feel Arvin's erection pressing against his thigh. "I suit you, Jack."

07:37 pm Moonhunt by Dolimir (NC-17)
Fandom: THE SENTINEL
Pairing: Jim/Blair
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] dolimir
Author Website:
Why this must be read:

I had a hard time deciding which Dolimir's story to rec. I have quite a few favorites. I chose Moonhunt for Dolimir's take on Shaman!Blair and her interpretation of "THE BOND". "The bond" can make or break a story in my book since it's such a fanon cliché. In this story the bond doesn't totally obliterate Blair which is a good thing. It doesn't make Jim a caveman, also a good thing. Dolimir created an AU universe that's intriguing, coherent and doesn't change too much the limits of the Sentinel world.

08:36 pm Duet for Three Stooges by Kit Mason (PG)
Fandom: DUE SOUTH
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski, Fraser/Vecchio
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] twistedchick
Author Website: http://kit.mrks.org/
Why this must be read:

You can't see where you are going without knowing where you have been.

An exploration of where Fraser and the Rays stand at the nexus of Vecchio going undercover and Kowalski stepping into the partnership. I really like how the voice flows from Vecchio (pulling back) to Fraser (stuck in place) to Kowalski (looking forward) and how the story builds given this emotional structure. Vecchio may be hiding, Fraser may be despairing, and Kowalski may be bucking the odds but we can see the foreshadowing of resolution for all of them by Call of the Wild. What also makes this story a step above is how nicely the author handles the different tones and inflections for each character.

Fraser came out of Welsh's office looking tired and lost and confused -- like the face I saw in the mirror after Stella threw me out. )

Why this must be read:
It could have happened this way, although I am glad it didn't. It's a dark story, about a Brian who never learned to open his heart. Brian rescues Michael one more time, but it's not enough.
