Fandom: STARGATE SG-1 Pairing: none Author's webpage: Stargate SG-1Author on LJ: seldearWhy this must be read:This one's one of those random, just-because-I-really-like-it recs. It's not an epic action-adventure, doesn't redefine a pivotal episode. It's just a short, quietly perceptive character vignette that considers things from an angle not frequently covered. Jack, and the guy next door. Neighbor

Fandom: STARGATE SG-1 Pairing: Sam/Mini!Jack Author's webpage: Nostalgia for an Age Yet to ComeAuthor on LJ: nostalgia_ljWhy this must be read:It's so, so wrong, and yet so, so hot. It's my pr0n-y contribution to the recs. Post-"Lost City" and pre-season 8, Carter stops off to see Jack's clone (from "Fragile Balance") to tell him what happened to his original. Unexpected things occur. Clone!Jack is a great mix of his grown-upself and some teenage attitude, that must be rubbing off from being in high school again. Carter's the rule-conscious major we know, but she's also hurting, and very, very practical. ( the sane response to an insane situation )Next Best Thing

Fandom: BLAKE'S 7 Pairing: Avon/Blake, past Avon/Vila Author on LJ: not that I know of Author Website: don't know. Why this must be read: Again delving into the deep dark waters of Oblique here. Jane Baron is a masterful writer, as you can see from the previously recced "Fugue" saga. This piece is all about Vila angst, *sniffle*. A thief soon learns the best hiding places in even the most advanced spaceship, but what he discovers while doing so can break his heart. Avon and Blake's relationship is twisting the knife in his heart--and Jane Baron knows how to bring that across in the most sob-worthy way possible. While we have massive angst here, we also get one of the IMHO hottest, best sex Blake/Avon sex scenes out there. It's very subtly done, seen through Vila's eyes--the sensuality and the eroticism are breathtaking. And that, of course, brings out Vila's memories of Avon in a holding cell, something entirely different to what's going on with Blake and Avon. Melancholy but sweet, enjoyable for the angst, the gorgeous writing (I melted at some of the metaphors and descriptions here, brilliance) carrying you through it easily all the way to the bitter end. *Worships* Witness

Fandom: BLAKE'S 7 Pairing: Blake/Avon Author on LJ: astrogirl2Author Website: Not under this name, and no fic site, AFAIK. Why this must be read: I can't lie. This is my favourite PGP (Post-Gauda Prime) story. Perhaps alongside Belatrix's "Linked", also recced here some time ago. The angst fiend that I am, this damn thing had me in tears. EVEN if it has a thing I usually don't believe in slash *at all* and will turn me off many a story. That's just an indication of how bloody brilliant this woman's writing is!:) But telling you what that potential turnoff is would be spoiling. The story is very short and compact, every word full of meaning, every word beautiful. Gorgeous sadness, and *the* way I imagine the whole B7 story really ended. 'Til Death

Fandom: YAMI NO MATSUEI Pairing: Tsuzuki/Hisoka Author on LJ: yasminmAuthor Website: CravingWhy this must be read: This is Tsuzuki and Hisoka, stripped of the facades, fighting free of memories, and going through the very slow healing process. This story has spot-on characterization, gorgeous writing, and imagery that illustrates the emotions involved perfectly. It's not a happy story, but it's a hopeful one. Long Way Down

Attn. Drivers: Tomorrow's the last Friday of the month, which means it's time for Friday Night Drive-In, a.k.a. Fan Vid Recs.
Reccers may post 1 vid rec for their fandom, formatted as follows:

Because the vidder community has some unique ownership issues, it’s important that reccers be extra careful when making vid recs. Depending on the vidder’s preferences regarding public access to their work, please link your rec in the appropriate manner:
1. If the video is publicly accessible, direct link to the web page the vid is linked on, or if it’s the vidder’s request, to the HTML splash page of their site.
or…
2. Link to the site with instructions on acquiring the password, if the site is protected – do not reveal the password yourselves.
or…
3. Provide contact info for the vidder if their vids are only available privately (tapes, dvd-R’s, collections, etc.).
Do not: Hotlink, i.e. link directly to the video file rather than the webpage. Re-upload videos that a vidder has removed from the web. Delay in removing a vid rec if requested to do so by the vidder.

Fandom: X-FILES Pairing: Mulder/Scully Author on LJ: N/A Author Website: http://hometown.aol.com/amory20Why this must be read: Reading JLB's writing is like seeping for hours in a nice, warm, softly scented bath. Her stories are comforting in their effortlessness, their insight, and their romance. I particularly like "Only in Dream" because I can imagine Mulder thinking, feeling, and acting just this way at just this point in the series, the tail end of season seven. There's a message that even the best of relationships can be the most confusing and dysfunctional, which is a big reason why Mulder and Scully are so unfailingly interesting. Plus, there's an appealing undercurrent of hope in the story, that lives always have meaning and safety even in the midst of sadness and danger. The air is so heavy that Mulder imagines he can see it, thick and gray, as it swirls through the room. He moves his hand through the space in front of him to see if his fingers leave streaks, surprised when his fingertips return clean, no dusty film marring the skin.Only in DreamYou should also check out this story's two sequels, Bed of Stars and Beyond Wishing.

Fandom: STARGATE SG-1 Pairing: briefly implied Jack/Teal'c/Daniel Author's webpage: Dorothy Marley's Fanfictionauthor on LJ: dmarleyWhy this must be read:And now for the straight-up humor recommendation. Yes, I know you all just read Jack/Teal'c/Daniel and said "....the hell?" but just go with it. This is a quick, amusing, two-part punch about why you shouldn't leave Jack alone with the U.S. Census form. Since he is, after all, required by law to complete it, Jack decides he might as well tell the truth...and then Daniel has some 'splainin' to do. Is it OOC for Jack to be revealing classified information? Well, yeah, but since you can just see him sitting there smirking as he fills in the boxes, it really doesn't seem to matter. Fandom: X-FILES Pairing: I'll say what the author says: "This isn't MSR. People think I should tell you this in advance." Author on LJ: N/A Author Website: MargueriteWhy this must be read: Oh the controversy and arguing that erupted about this little 4K post-episode story. I think it's a delightfully amusing story that pokes fun at the absurdity of the "X-Cops" episode (which was filmed in "Cops" TV show style and followed Mulder and Scully on a late night hunt through the streets for a werewolf, Freddy Krueger type beast terrorizing a neighborhood). It's also a humorous poke at OTPs and story assumptions. This story never fails to make me laugh and smile. Remotely Controlled

Fandom: BUFFY Pairing: -- Author on LJ: nostalgia_ljAuthor Website: nostalgia for an age yet to comeWhy this must be read: The basic mythos of the Buffyverse -- Into every generation a slayer is born -- means there's a lot of possibility for historical or original characters who still connect to the underlying concepts of the show. ( History Lesson is an entire archive dedicated to pre-Buffy slayers.) Dig For Victory is the story of a slayer living in London during the Blitz. Apart from the history nerd coolness of that, what makes this story great is that it gets the central juxtaposition that made Buffy work so well: how do you handle fighting monsters alongside everyday life? How do you put the mystical into a larger context? The fic is short but a solidly good read, with vivid, well-drawn characters. Dig For Victory

Fandom: THE SENTINEL Pairing: Jim/Blair Author on LJ: eliadeAuthor Website: Anna's storiesWhy this must be read: Because it's has snappy dialogs, snarky Blair, power tools, the cliché trip to the hardware store. To quote Anna S : "A day in a life. Curtains. Sex." The dialogs are funny, you can almost hear them snapping at each other, yet it has beautiful imagery and one point of view, Blair's. It's still one of my favorites after many years. It's fluff (says the author) but in my book, it's very good storytelling dressed up as fluff. Very good fluff. CurtainsComments always welcome

Fandom: STAR TREK: THE ORIGINAL SERIES Pairing: None Author on LJ: Not that I know of Author Website: Fizzbin's Deck O'TrekWhy this must be read:When DeForest Kelley died on the 11th June 1999 several fanfic authors wrote memorial stories about the character with which he had become identified, Leonard McCoy. Fandom: YAMI NO MATSUEI Pairing: several implied slash pairings, but nothing overt - the same as you would expect in canon (isn't that cryptic!) Author on LJ: incandescensAuthor Website: Maya's HomepageWhy this must be read:Nearly everyone gets a chance to do something exciting in this action-filled AU story. Set shortly after the King of Swords arc, we find Tatsumi, Watari, Hisoka, and Tsuzuki embroiled in a mystery. Shinigami are being attacked right in Meifu - Watari has a potions accident - Tatsumi is unusually thoughtful - Tsuzuki eats cake (nothing unusual there) - and Hisoka finds himself ... in a box. By turns amusing and suspenseful, the story kept my attention all the way to the end. Longtime fans may find it predictable, and some may quibble a characterization choice here or there, but the pacing is good, and it's nicely constructed. Fandom: Star Wars Pairing:none Author on LJ: Author Website: Why this must be read: Ignore the 1996 Fan Q for best story Ignore the 1996 Star Award. This is still a fabulous story any which way one takes it. It is AU, using one of my favorite tropes: Luke didn't escape the carbonite pit. The rest of the story is a seduction. Not a sexual one, but one of mind and soul. Slowly, Luke slips into the Darkness, never realizing he's falling. MJ has a beautiful way with Luke, capturing idealism, anger, Father-need and power-hunger all in one. Her Vader is one of the closest to canon I've encountered: stern, with anger boiling below the surface, but able to feel. So, Dark Luke. Why are you still reading this? Falling by MJ Mink
