12:25 am Fan Interference is a Stand-Up Double by Sabine and S. N. Kastle (PG-13)

Why this must be read:

How has this not been recommended before?  This story starts in the present day with some bullpen speculation about who's gay in the Major Leagues and jumps back to 1988.  Dan's a rookie sportswriter working on what sounds like a fabulous story about the waning days of a once-great team.  He's around the team, but not of the team, and there's a beauty to this section that has me almost liking baseball. (*)  I read this, and I can feel the rumbling of the bus underneath me, the scratch of the seats and I get thirsty thinking of the dust.  Go.  Read.

Fan Interference is a Stand-Up Double

* it reminds me of stephen king's "Head Down", a short non-fiction piece at the end of Nightmares and Dreamscapes about his son's Little League team.

Why this must be read:

Sure, we’re supposed to root for Our Heroes, whatever the fandom, but I’ve always had a soft spot for supporting and guest characters. What happens to those people who make only the briefest of appearances in canon, but whose lives are deeply touched during that time?

This story takes a look at Patience, and the lasting results of those actions taken by Mal and his crew in the pilot, Serenity.

Once, shouts and the sound of running horses would have pulled her from the bed no matter the weather or the hour. This was Whitefall - her world, her town, and no one raised hell without her leave. Her place, her people. Three years ago, a man walked down main street, shooting holes in lit upper story windows as he went, drunk as a missionary after High Mass. From the dirt street, he was only shattering glass and ventilating a few yards of tarpaper. Patience herself shot him, still wrapped in a quilt but wearing her hat, three hundred meters and one bullet through his head. She went back to bed and slept until daybreak. After breakfast, finding the drunk's body still on the street, she stripped her sheriff of his badge and run him out of town in his longjohns.

Once upon a time. Now she needs a nurse to help her rise from bed, and a pair of canes to walk. Patience shuts her eyes and wishes she could close her ears to the distant brawl.

11:58 am Powerful Weapons, Sexy Machines, by Jayne Leitch (PG)
Fandom: FIREFLY
Pairing: Jayne/Kaylee (of a sort)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] serrico
Author’s Website: The Fanfiction of Jayne Leitch
Why this must be read:

Kaylee and Jayne is another relationship I don’t often find explored in fanfic. This fic takes up Jayne’s reputation, Kaylee’s issues, post-War Stories, and adds in a dash of angst with a fine heaping of humour. I adored Jayne in this fic, though I don’t often gravitate towards stories featuring him.

"Okay now," he said, very slowly, raising his hands in as non-threatening a pose as he could manage while he turned back to face his guest. A trickle of apple juice ran down the blade of his knife and onto his fingers, but he ignored it. "You wanna tell me just what the ruttin' hell you think you're doin' in my bunk? With my gun?"

"Why? Don't you like it?" The smile got wider, and Kaylee cocked her head to the side, letting her hair fall half-over her face. "Girl in your bed, holdin' your big, powerful weapon...I'd have thought you'd be happy to come home to that."

Jayne let out a disbelieving snort. Right now, he was just happy she was dressed. Although...squinting past the gun, he could see that she was wearing a short skirt and some kind of top that did real interesting things with her...girl parts. It didn't look bad--not bad at all, come to that, and why did she cover herself up all the time, anyhow? 'Cause this was about as far from her usual, shapeless overalls as that frilly pink thing Mal'd bought her for the ball a while back, and yeh soo ta ma duh, Mal... "D'you have any gorram idea what the captain'll do to me if he finds you in here?"

Kaylee crinkled her nose. "Why would you get in trouble? I broke into your bunk."

"So? The captain still won't like it. He's got...views. On girls. And me." The apple juice was collecting under his grip, making the hilt of his knife sticky. And he'd just cleaned it, too. "Jesus, Kaylee, you've got views on me. What're you doin' here?"

Finally dropping that eerie-ass smile, Kaylee rolled her eyes. "Come on, you whoo dahn ox, what does it look like I'm doing?" And without shifting her grip on Vera even an inch, she slid off the bed and slunk right up to him--or as close as she could get without lowering the gun, anyway. Jayne noticed she wasn't wearing shoes, which meant that the top of her head was several inches below his shoulder--but Vera's quiet, high-powered whine as Kaylee prodded his chest with the end of the barrel kept him stock-still. "I'm tryin' to seduce you. Didn't think it'd be quite this hard, to tell the truth."

Fandom: HORNBLOWER
Pairing: Archie/Horatio, Pellew/Horatio, others
Author on LJ: N/A; correct me if I'm wrong.
Author Website: N/A
Why this must be read:

Because it's hilarious! *Any* story with a "Whoratio" and an "Arch Imp Kennedy" must be read! To call this a true gen of a parody would be an understatement! This is so witty, so funny, and so disturbingly easy to picture that you can't help but cackle. We have somulent serpents in intestinal jungles, people anchoring themselves in snug habors and officers hot as Perditions flames. This is really not to be missed :)
