08:48 am Gnomic, by Lysimache (G)
Fandom: FIREFLY
Pairing: Kaylee/Inara
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] lysimache
Author’s Website: Chez Jen
Why this must be read:

This fic is from the early days of the fandom--the *very* early days, as it was written after the (non-)pilot aired. Therefore, the characterization isn’t spot on--this Kaylee is more shy than she is in canon--but the fic is lovely nonetheless.

Their spaces say a lot about people. A man who never turns on a light if he can be in the dark is either a miser who can't bear the expense of the light, or a miner who can't bear the light itself.

Yours here, in this noisy engine room, says that you are competent, as you fiddle with things knowingly. It says that you have a great capacity to care, for many things are mended rather than replaced, held together by a bit of faith and a dash of improvisation, a squirt of glue here and a patch of tape there. It says that you are perhaps a bit lonely, surrounded by machines and not people.

09:06 am A Pretty War, by Kyra Cullinan (R)
Fandom: FIREFLY
Pairing: River/Kaylee, Simon/Kaylee, Simon/River/Kaylee
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author’s Website: narrowstreets.net
Why this must be read:

Unlike the vast majority of Firefly fans, neither Simon nor River were my draw to the show and fandom. I liked them well enough, but they didn’t fire my imagination the way other characters did. That said, however, authors in this fandom have done wonderful, terrible things with the Tam siblings.

I love this story because of the links between River, Simon, and Kaylee. They need each other, and River sees, River *knows.*

There are days and days, sometimes, when they don't see each other at all. Things draw River out, away, make her lose herself. Serenity swallows her up, as deep and promising as Kaylee, or more. The times when it's hard to keep track of what's now or real. Falling inside herself.

Kaylee kisses her when she comes back, if she's not doing something so terribly important. Kaylee is like Simon, she doesn't mind the way things drift. Understands. Patient with her. Pleasant idle River hum in the back of her mind when they're together, same rhythm as the way she thinks about the engine, just. Different key; soft skin and wet snail trails across it. This is what Kaylee likes, the naked and the feelgood. River likes her liking it. A focusing thing, something to learn. Quick skitter across her mind. Like Kaylee's fingers on her body.

09:14 am Too Few to Mention, by Victoria P. (G)
Fandom: FIREFLY
Pairing: Zoe/Wash
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] musesfool
Author’s Website: Achromatic
Why this must be read:

A short, but clear look at Zoe as she is now, and who she might have been had things gone differently. A thoughtful slice-of-life moment between Zoe and Wash, well-worth the read.

"You don't want to see them?"

    "Did I say that?"

"Well, then, I don't understand." Wash's forehead crinkled, and Zoe thought he looked adorable when he was confused. "Are you ashamed of me?"

"No," she said, more sharply than intended. But secretly, sometimes, she wondered what her life would be like if she'd made different choices. If she'd never left Olympia, never joined the Browncoats, would she be like Allie now, mother of five strong children, with a ranch to call her own?

10:31 am Homecoming by Lucy and Cheryl M
Yay! I have a theme this week:) It's family in the SH universe. And I'm going back to my tried and true two gen and a slash set-up.

Fandom: Starsky and Hutch

Pairing: Starsky & Hutch

Fic Link: http://www.squidge.org/~flamingo/starskyhutchgen/classics/LucyandCheryl/Homecoming.htm

Why this must be read: Originally published in the Starsky & Hutch zine Half You, Half Me 1, it's a look at Starsky's return to a home he once knew. The boys escort a prisoner back to New York and Starsky's past is opened up to them. A mispent youth, a brother whose anger outweighs his love, and a mother who just wants her boys to get along. Unfortunately, Hutch is put into the middle of it when he is thrown into the neighborhood full force. Starsky makes his choice, but will blood win above partnership?

10:40 am Honor Thy Father by K Hanna Korossy
Fandom: Starsky and Hutch

Pairing: Starsky & Hutch

Fic Link: http://www.squidge.org/~flamingo/starskyhutchgen/classics/KHannaKorossy/HonorThyFather.htm

Why this must be read: Originally featured in the zine A Small Circle of Friends #4, it's time to look at the Hutchinson side of the family. John Hutchinson has come to Bay City to visit his son and see just what kind of life he's made. First impressions are often full of misjudgements and this is the case here as well. But when he gives his son a second look, what will he really see?

Look, there be slash here!

Fandom: Starsky and Hutch

Pairing: Starsky/Hutch

Fic Link: http://www.squidge.org/~flamingo/starskyhutchslash/classic/Rosemary/JourneysEnd.htm

Why this must be read: Originally published in the zine Tongue In Cheek, it's set post-Sweet Revenge. This is a look at the only family they really need, each other. Starsky is living in Washington State, in the winter, on an apple farm. Why? Because where Hutch goes, he goes. And they realized a whole lot on that farm other than how to pick apples. Where one goes, the other follows. Such is life, such is love.

"You've never wanted it before," Hutch reminded, his eyes fixed on the mug in his hands.

"So? I never wanted to live on a farm either, but I'm here with you."

As Ro sums up, 'Things do not change. We change.' And sometimes those changes can only lead to better things.

Fandom: QUEER AS FOLK US
Pairing: Brian/Justin, Michael/Ben
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] eleveninches
Author Website: Defunct for the foreseeable future.
Why this must be read:

Few people bring the funny like durendal, and this story is a classic example. Post-s3 and the defeat of Stockwell in the mayoral race, Stockwell exacts his revenge in rather unexpected ways.

04:22 pm One Stolen Night by Kristin (NC-17)
Fandom: OZ
Pairing: Beecher/Keller
Author on LJ: ???
Why this must be read: It's hot, desperate, sexy and gut-wrenching.

On the eve of Operation Andy, Toby's gotten a letter informing him that he might lose custody of his kids. So he gets drunk and crawls into Keller's bed - giving them an opportunity that won't come again. One night for Keller to stake his claim, to show Toby how much he loves him and how much Toby needs him. One night for Beecher to take the solace (and the sex) that Keller has been offering for so long, that he's denied them both. And to steel himself for what will follow.

Though it deviates from canon, it is easy to imagine things unfolding this way. The story crystallizes all the passion, pain, power and poignancy of Beecher/Keller. It packs a serious sensual, and emotional, wallop.

An excerpt... )

It's four parts - three chapters and an epilogue. The archive site is not maintained, but the story is still there. Clicking on the "Continued in next chapter" brings an error message, so I've listed all four URLs:

06:02 pm Ozone by Jane St. Clair (NC-17)
Fandom: SMALLVILLE
Pairing: Clark/Lex
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] 3jane
Author Website: Janefic

Why this must be read:
Jane's vulnerable-yet-armored Lex is more cerebral and less fucked-up than the usual characterization, but that works for me. Lex trying to figure out Bruce's "psychosexual problem child" is amusing. Also, Ozone features a brief appearance of comic-loving Lex, and that does make a fangirl happy.

Um. I guess I should be responsible and give an underage sex warning because Clark is only 15 in this story.

Note: You have to read Smog (set in the Batman universe) first for Ozone to make sense.

09:18 pm The Simple Truth of Skin by Thamiris (NC-17)
Fandom: SMALLVILLE
Pairing: Clark/Lex
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] thamiris
Author Website: Odysseys and Ecstasies

Why this must be read:
This is an insta-rec for a story posted tonight that takes us back to the angst and eye fucks of season 1 Clex. I think it hit nearly every kink I have for this pairing, ringing my bells like a pinball machine being slapped by a master player, but there is characterization and believable dialogue along with the hotness. This story is painful to read in light of events in seasons 2 and 3, but I was happy to be taken back in time to a place where there was more hope for these two.

11:14 pm Alphabetum by Sophia Jirafe (PG)
Fandom: THE X-FILES
Pairing: Mulder/Scully
Author's Website: Into the Heart...
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] double_helix

Why this must be read: This is the most cleverly structured story I've ever read. Twenty-six paragraphs in alphabetical order, each starting with the word/letters that the last ended with, and all revealing something about Scully. Sophia Jirafe takes the humorous episode of Rain King and turns it on its head, making it into something deep and beautiful but most especially, a starting-off point to years of missed chances.

Scully remembers, Scully regrets, Scully thinks in ABC's.

This is where I am. )
