Fandom: FARSCAPE Pairing: ensemble cast Author on LJ: scorpy808 Author Website: Uncharted TerritoriesWhy this must be read: Early (season 1) John Crichton, stranger in a strange land, is eminently appealing in his earnest struggle to fit in to a universe more bizarre than he'd ever imagined. Most of the time he ends up in trouble, as his main talent seems to be getting himself into one scrape after another. Scorpy808 channels his voice perfectly in this amusing first-person POV fic, which cleverly cuts between handwritten notes and dialogue to provide a glimpse into exactly what the title implies. Fandom: BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER Pairing: Buffy/Faith Author on LJ: m_phoenixAuthor Website: Don't believe so. Why this must be read:I've been reccing some pretty unconventional pairings so far, so I thought it would be time to point y'all towards a story with a canon... ...wait, what do you mean Buffy/Faith isn't canon? In m_phoenix's story, they certainly could be. Set in season seven, "Zen and the Art of Stake Maintenance" pulls no punches as far as Buffy and Faith's past enmity goes. These two characters have been archnemeses and they have been allies, but they've always been rivals, and the biggest reason for that is the fact that they refuse to talk to each other. They're both left hating an idea of the person they wish they could be, even when they've run out of reasons to hate. Cutting, cruel, and aching for missed opportunities, "Zen and the Art of Stake Maintenance" is a look at a conversation that so easily could have been. Zen and the Art of Stake Maintenance

Fandom: THE O.C. Pairing: Ryan/Seth Author on LJ: candle_beckAuthor Website: None Why this must be read: Ryan didn’t evolve this way, but this is who he could have been. A breathtaking interpretation of Ryan’s introduction to Newport. An excerpt: You get kicked out of your house, probably you should have seen that coming too. And your voice breaks when you say, “where am I gonna go?” and you wish it hadn’t. And no one has a place for you to stay, not a couch or a patch of carpet or a fucking back porch, nothing. Theresa says, “My mom, Ryan, she heard you got arrested, she, she doesn’t want-” and then her voice breaks too, just like yours, and you hang up before she starts crying and begging you to forgive her in Spanish. Some fucking friends. Some fucking life.Smart

Fandom: SILMARILLION Pairing: None Author on LJ: maelipstickAuthor Website: Lipstick at fanfiction.netWhy this must be read: At the end of the First Age, Maglor casts his Silmaril into the sea, and it is said that 'thereafter he wandered ever upon the shores, singing in pain and regret beside the waves ... but he came never back among the people of the Elves.' Many fine stories have been written about Maglor's wanderings through recorded history, and I hope to draw your attention to some of the others later, but I think 'Captain Tinkerbell' is my favourite. It's written as Maglor (Makalaure)'s diary in the trenches of 1916, and it's quite brilliant. I'll let Lipstick's words speak for themselves... 'When a shell hits, there are no poems. What the men usually say, when they say anything at all, is one word, simple, brutal, monosyllabic and obscene. It strikes me as a fair comment.
Lament would be blasphemy. It is only the lesser words that can convey the experience of routine slaughter.'If you only read one of my recommendations, I urge you to read this. Captain Tinkerbell
