09:45 am Anticipation, by Dawn Cunningham (PG-13)
Fandom: HIGHLANDER
Pairing: None, implied Duncan/Tessa, Connor/F, Fitzcairn/F
Author Website: The Seventh-Dimension Archive

Why this must be read:

Dawn Cunningham writes fabulous Duncan/Tessa/Richie moments. She's really great at writing sweet gen and showing Richie's early awkwardness as he tried to fit in with Duncan and Tessa's affluence and their loving, stable relationship throughout the first season, which in some ways was harder for Richie to assimilate than Duncan's Immortality.

Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA 1978
Pairing: Starbuck/Apollo
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] annaorr
Author Website: Apollolover
Why this must be read: There's something about the premise of BSG that is innately melodramatic, perhaps because it's so epic in scale. The irony is that despite this galactic scope, there's all these long, empty hours between cylon attacks for the pilots to fill, and a limited number of venues in which to fill them. As a result, authors tend to focus on human drama of the most wonderfully soap operatic kind as a basis for their stories (and I don't mean that in any way as an insult--this type of story is generically known as "space opera" for a *reason*). And when it comes to this kind of space opera, the queen of the long, plotty, action-packed melodrama is definitely Anna...

Mapping the Human Genome )

This story could be considered AU, although it doesn't stray terribly far from the tv show's premise. However, if you don't like even mild AU, then this story probably isn't for you.

Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA 2003
Pairing: No Pairing (Roslin)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] myalchod
Author Website: dreamwoven
Why this must be read: One of the best things about BSG2003 is that there are a lot of strong women in key roles, and they are interesting for more reasons than just who they have good sexual chemistry with. President Roslin is one such character. This short vignette explores Roslin's impossible task in a poignant and lyrical way.

Fandom: QUEER AS FOLK: UK
Pairing: None (This is gen with Stuart and Nathan. Stuart/Vince implied to any true S/V shipper.)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] xof1013
Author Website: xof's stories on Across the Pond

Why this must be read:
I chose this little ficlet because it hits one of my QaFUK kinks, a clever use of Dr. Who. I also thought it would be nice to start my month of recs out with a couple of stories by the first writer I read in this fandom. Perhaps this fix-it is too simple to be canon, but I am sure that Vince would forgive Stuart anything if he turned up like this. *g*

11:49 pm Saving Grace (NLG Series, Part 3) by xof (NC-17)
Fandom: QUEER AS FOLK: UK
Pairing: Stuart/Vince

Why this must be read:
You should read the first two parts for the third story to make the most sense. The first story in this series, Not Letting Go, is for dedicated hurt/comfort fans, and I admit up front that's not me. The second story, Holding On, has a very well-done cameo by Hazel, so Hazel fans should make sure to read it.

I really like the third part for the dialogue, always a strength in xof's writing, and the Dr. Who references, which made me smile hugely like the nerdy fangirl I am. (The fourth story is Cherished Resurrection.)
