Fandom: X-MEN COMICVERSE Pairing: Logan/Jean/Remy Author Website: TeethmarksWhy this must be read:This story is hot. I can’t really say why it’s a must read without spoiling it, but I will say that the reasoning behind Logan and Remy wanting to get together with Jean just blew me away. It’s one of the few Logan/Jean fics that made me realize that the pairing isn’t all that ishy after all. The Rough, The Smooth and The In-BetweenKristine

Hi, I'm Rocky and I'll be piloting the starship for this month's Star Trek recs. I plan on covering all 5 series, with a slightly heavier concentration in VOY. My emphasis will be older fics that newer fans might not have come across before, particularly as many of these authors aren't on LJ. Ridiculous Liasions by Jungle Kitty (PG-13) Fandom: STAR TREK TOS Pairing: Kirk/f Author on LJ: none Author Website: Invisible PlanetsWhy this must be read:I love character background stories, especially those that give us a glimpse of the person in the prime of their careers. Set in Starfleet Academy, this story introduces us to a young Kirk as well as Gary Mitchell, Finnegan, Ruth and a couple of sparkling OC's. Readers familiar with Jungle Kitty's other stories already know and love Suzanne Brandt, and she's absolutely hysterical in this tale. This is one of my favorite 'fun' fics and I find myself going back to it time and again whenever I need a smile. Ridiculous Liaisons

Fandom: SPORTS NIGHT Pairing: Dan/Casey Author on LJ: janissa11Author Website:EmlandWhy this must be read:I'm Texas Bek and for my first SN rec I'm offering Making It Real by the fabulous Em. This was one of the first Dan/Casey stories I read and it stuck with me for several reasons. First, the sex is holy-hell hot. But we also see a very real take on what a relationship between Dan and Casey might look like instead of a candy-sweet version. Beautifully written and painfully poignant; Go read! Making It Real

Fandom: HIGHLANDER Pairing: None Author on LJ: hmpfAuthor Website: Hmpf's Fan FictionWhy this must be read: This is probably one of the most unique pieces of HL fiction I've ever read. It's dark, bleak and seriously atmospheric, set in a dystopic future and everything from the formatting to the language works to put the reader squarely inside the world of the story. It's Methos, the survivor, distilled to his most essential form. And it's very well done. To tell you more would be to spoil the experience. ( A tiny taste... )Endure

Fandom: HORNBLOWER Pairing: William Bush & Horatio Hornblower Author on LJ:NA Author Website:NA Why this must be read:
Hornblower movieverse fandom is full of Live Kennedy fix-its. This is the only fic I have found that is a Live Bush fix-it and for that reason alone is well worthy of being read. The story extends significantly past the reach of the television series and is focused on what did or did not happen on the quay in Caudebec. It is heavily drawn from Lord Hornblower and Hornblower in the West Indies.
In the author's own words: "Lord Hornblower was always the most difficult of the Hornblower books for me to read, for within its pages something that was very dear to me was broken, seemingly beyond repair. In this story, I have endeavored to fix the unfixable ...."
Even though this is heavily book canon, it is still perfectly readable without having knowledge of the written series. The author has smoothly communicated the background info through the voices of the characters. Her Bush characterization is beautifully poignant and perfectly in tune. As is her Hornblower.
This is clearly spoiler heavy as to the fate of Mr. Bush as Forester wrote it.

Fandom: CSI
Pairing: Warrick/Sara
Author on LJ:
helsinkibaby
Author Website:
the band gazebo
Why this must be read:
This is a short piece, but it gives you an insight into Brass' head you normally don't get. It's first person, based around the pairing of Warrick and Sara, but it drags in Brass' past as well. She plays the characters right – putting their most perceived persona into the fic, but molding it into her own version of the characters. She makes use of one persons predicament to tell you about another persons.
It's well written, which is always a plus, and gets to the point. It doesn't drag on, it doesn't leave you hanging. It's simply a look into a short period of time, a single conversation between two people and what it means, and how it affects them. Most definitely worth the short time it will take to read.
If you don't know who Ellie is, it might take a few seconds for the premises of the fic to register, but you should be fine.

Hi I'm Scribewraith and I'm taking a turn at the helm of the Serenity for this month. Firefly is one of my favourite fandoms with some well developed characters and a world that's great to experience. The stories that I'm planning to rec will hopefully show a little of the character of the 'verse and remind us all of the desparation with which we want to see the upcoming film (and as an Australian, I don't even get the preview showings that all you American's get *pout*). My favourite ship is Simon/Jayne, so that's where I thought I'd start: Fandom: FIREFLY Pairing: Simon/Jayne Author on LJ: aldiara Author Website: n/a Why this must be read: The language and imagery in this story are amazing. River's voice is such a joy to read and there are lots of little details which enhance the characters. It's hard to describe this story because it works on so many visceral levels. Jayne is hard to write and this is pretty well done, particularly expanding on the history we know within the 'verse we know. And I could hear Simon as I read it. Just lovely. Fathom a River

Fandom: DC COMICS Pairing: Tim/Kon Author on LJ: maelithilAuthor Website: none as far as I know. Why this must be read: Kon is pretty much my favorite character in the DCU, and thus this month I'm making it my personal mission to make each and every one of you fall in love with him. And if you don't fall in love with him after reading this fic, you disturb me. This was written for the Jingle Bells, Batman Smells Yuletide challenge. It's Kon's first Christmas as Conner Kent, official member of the Kent extended family, and he's still adjusting to having an actual family, and still freaking out about half of his genes belonging to Lex Luthor. This Kon is sarcastic and vulnerable and horny and adorable, and every time I read it I find something new that makes me want to give him lots and lots of hugs. I also love the Tim in this fic: calculating and scarily capable and eerily competent, and also a teenage boy who just wants to make his best friend feel better. ( excerpt )Fortress of Paradise

Hi, I’m Kiwisue and I’ll be driving the Capri for The Professionals in June. I hope to rec stories with a little something for everyone, from light & humorous to dark & dangerous. My first rec is definitely of the latter variety. Fandom: THE PROFESSIONALS Pairing: Bodie/Doyle Author on LJ: Author Website: http://mediafans.org/thomas/ Why this must be read: This was one of the first Pros stories I ever read and I was enthralled. It’s a deeply dark tale of anger, denial, lust and (?perceived) betrayal. ( look here, sunshine… ) Ambush

I apologize for the delay of today's (or rather yesterday's) rec, technical difficulties now sorted out. Fandom: Farscape Pairing: References to John/Aeryn Author on LJ: redstarrobotAuthor Website: None that I know of. Why this must be read: RedStarRobot was one of the five finalists for "best new writer" in last year's Sparky Awards, and in my opinion it's easy to tell why. She has a flair for short, intense, atmospheric pieces, getting right into a character's head and creating amazing word-pictures that suck you in utterly. Her unique approach to things is clearly evidenced by this, her response to farscapefriday's challenge for "Zombies". I won't say too much more than that, for it would spoil the fun, but I will add that given some of the things that happen in Farscape canon, the crew of Moya somehow ending up in the seedier parts of 60's London is not only plausible but frighteningly probable. ( London Exists )It's funny, but it's also bittersweet; it's groovy, but also strangely dark. It's short but filling; it doesn't explain what's going on but somehow doesn't need to. It's 60's London on a Saturday night, Farscape-style. The Goldhawk Social Club
