11:00 am Kiss the Darkness by Suzanna Post (R)
Hello!

I'm [livejournal.com profile] comice, more commonly known as Anjou. It's my pleasure to be driving the nondescript Ford Taurus behind the Crack Van this month, recommending tales of Agents Mulder and Scully for your enjoyment. One of the greatest things about The X-Files fandom is the number of talented, erudite writers who wrote XF fic. Many have moved on to other fandoms, but some seem to have simply vanished. Luckily, thanks to archives such as Gossamer, we still have their stories. Over the course of this month, I plan to share some personal favorites that I don't want to be forgotten.

Fandom: THE X-FILES
Pairing: Mulder/Scully
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: unknown

Why this must be read: Kiss the Darkness is one of my favorite kinds of X-Files stories. A post-colonization what-if story, it seeks to answer, with scientific specificity, how the colonization of Earth by aliens could be defeated.

Sound dull? It's not. Set mid-S6, Kiss the Darkness is a quiet tale that unfolds with simplicity and elegance, tackling the darkest unexplained mysteries of the mytharc and wrestling them into the light.

11:14 am The Other Woman by Wildcat (PG-13)
Fandom: STAR TREK TOS
Pairing: Spock/Uhura
Author on LJ: none
Author Website: Wildcat's Trek Fic
Why this must be read:

Wildcat is the author of a long and satisfying series tracing the relationship between Spock and Uhura. Each and every one of her fics is a gem, but this one (which can easily be read as a stand-alone) does an excellent job of portraying the characters and the intrinsic differences which led to their breakup, while at the same time showing the deep, underlying pull that drew them together in the first place. Read and enjoy, and then go back and start at the beginning of the series. You won't regret it.

06:36 pm Five Deaths (Laura Roslin) by Rheanna (R)
Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA 2003
Pairing: Roslin/Adama
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] rheanna27
Author Website: Golden Maze

Why this must be read:

It's in the vein of a 'five things' story, and it brilliantly shows of five different lives and deaths of Laura Roslin. The author takes us into Laura's past, present and future. Each part is very well done and beautifully written. Five Deaths is one of the first fics I saw posted on LJ when BSG came out, and it's still one of my favourite Roslin stories.

07:01 pm A Bodyguard of Lies by Shrift (PG)
Fandom: ALIAS
Pairing: Julian Sark/Eric Weiss
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] shrift
Author Website: here
Why this must be read:

Another Weiss/Sark story, and really for me, that is almost enough. However, in addition to the pairing, like any of Shrift's stories in the 5,000 fandoms she writes in, the characterization is spot on. I love the thought of Sark taunting Weiss, rubbing against him and winking. Winking! Am I the only one that finds this hot? It's PG, so there's no sex, but this story is still incredibly sexy.

It place during season two sometime, definitely after Irina wounds Weiss. Basically, Weiss accompanies Sark on a mission and gets roped into playing his boytoy. It's a shorter piece, but it packs a punch and leaves you wanting more, which is what a good short story SHOULD do. It's from Weiss's POV, and I can imagine him saying every single word (if JJ Abrams suddenly became a slasher). And if you're still not convinced, check this out:

08:42 pm Lightning II: Beloved Stranger, by Valentin (NC-17)
Fandom: HERCULES: THE LEGENDARY JOURNEYS
Pairing: Ares/Iolaus, Hercules/Iolaus
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] tovalentin
Author website: Valentin's stories
Why this must be read:

This story is loosely linked to Lightning, but it stands alone well enough. Both stories are A/U's, playing with possibilities. Here, Iolaus swears himself to Ares as a boy, and Hercules and Iolaus never meet - not until General Iolaus is tired of fighting, and a demigod with a death wish decides to join his army...

Excerpt )

Sometimes Valentin's style grows a bit too purple for me, but her vivid, sensual writing makes this story a joy to read. I love the many little character moments - Iolaus' and Hercules' inauspicious first meeting, Ares' annoyance and amusement at a young, insouciant Iolaus - and the portrait of Iolaus as a war-weary general. Plus, the banter is snarky, the hurt/comfort is delicious and the sex is sizzling. Go read!

10:44 pm Theatre of the Absurd by Roseveare (R)
Hi. I'm Ann, long time fandom lurker, and I'll be your semi-competent driver this month. I read stories about peripheral characters as well as all things pretty and mildly evil. Also Wesley/Gunn, which is just pretty.

Fandom: ANGEL
Pairing: Kate/Darla
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] roseveare
Author Website: Freaky Alternative Universe
Why this must be read:

This is a Kate story set in the Wishverse, in a US stripped bare by the Master's humans a-go-go plan. Where vamps duke it out for rats blood and all the culture in NY can be found in a theatre preserved by a bored Darla.

Roseveare is one of the go to writers for plotty AUs. Theatre of the Absurd is the best kind of AU, where the author throws the characters into a chaotic universe -- familiar but OFF -- yet somehow keeps those characters pitch perfect. Darla is cruel, intelligent, and easily amused, on the edge of a semi-tantrum. And Kate... Dude. Kate is spectacularly shafted by the universe but remains tough and smart, practicality overruling a hard won right to brood.

In a relatively short self-contained piece, Roseveare manages to push forward a plot weighted with history while hinting at a larger future. It's a slice of an epic.

Also, Kate/Darla? Pretty. Very pretty.

Theatre of the Absurd

It's brilliant and disquieting, balanced by surprising and harshly funny moments. Go read it.

11:59 pm A Private Arrangement, by Freyja (NC-17)
Fandom: HIGHLANDER
Pairing: Methos/Joe Dawson
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] bigtitch
Author Website: Freyja's Highlander Slashfic

Why this must be read: Every person's sex life is their own secret garden, where they're not precisely the people they are in the rest of their lives. In this wonderful little PWP, Freyja takes us into Joe Dawson's secret garden, the place where he and Methos meet sometimes, the place where they give each other something they both need. Joe's voice is captured very well and Freyja doesn't shy away from using his physicality as a fact of his life and his sex life.

And there is scorchingly hot sex. What more could you want in a PWP?
