11:41 am Albatross by mcee (PG)
Fandom: PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN
Pairing: sort of an angsty Norrington/Elizabeth, but not really
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] mcee
Author Website: I have a link to it on my computer...which is in the shop. I'll get back to you.
Why this must be read: This is another one of those short, lovely, poetic pieces that's more about an emotion and a character than any sort of story. The character in this one is Norrington, and the emotion perhaps futility and denial. It's a take on Norrington I'm not sure I agree with, but it's a fascinating one.

(Apologies for being behind on the recs. My computer died, and I'm suddenly employed...it's all a bit chaotic lately.)

01:18 pm Only Human By Chicago (PG)
Fandom: DC COMICS
Pairing: Bruce Wayne/J'onn Jonzz (aka Batman/Martian Manhunter)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] chicago_h
Author Website: Chicago's Library
Why this must be read:

If there was ever a story that will convince you of a pairing you thought you'd never believe in, this is it. Seriously, when I saw that this fic had Bruce/J'onn as its pairing, I didn't read it. I didn't read it for a long while, until I was desperate for something to read, because c'mon, Bruce/J'onn?

I read this story and then promptly became obsessed with reading the rest of the (happily very long) series. In Chicago's hands, the pairing works and the series ranges from humor to angst to action. There's something for everyone.

This first story occurs in the aftermath of a comic canon incident, in which J'onn nearly died in a fire. In the comic, we see Batman telling J'onn to live, that he's not alone. (You can see scans of the relevant panels here.

02:41 pm Second Grace by Hilary (NR, Adult Material)
Fandom: SPORTS NIGHT
Pairing: Casey/Daniella (yes, you heard me)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] phoebesmum
Author Website: Sports Night Fic and Drabbles can be found in her memories.
Why this must be read:
Okay, the pairing is probably throwing you off. Yes, this is a gender-swap piece, which is pretty much categorically perceived as badfic. The thing is with this story, it isn't badfic at all. It is a touching, deftly composed love story - an alternative universe that is elegant in its composition. And that's part of what makes it so brilliant, taking what is a silly cliche and making is readable and enjoyable without layers of irony and post-modern posturing. The characterization is wonderful, not only Casey's, but you can still see and feel Dan in his female counterpart. There's romance, humor, and pain all rendered with a subtle touch. Definitely one of a kind, and a must read.

Additional note: The author didn't label this with a rating, but there is adult material in the story, so read at your discretion.

04:39 pm Roundabout by Casira (PG 13)
Fandom: Doctor Who
Pairing: 9/Rose
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] casirafics
Author Website: unknown
Why this must be read:

This fic is about the events in The Parting of the Ways, but it takes its dear sweet time getting around to its connection to that episode, really letting us see the characters get to the emotional points at which we see them at the end of that episode. It also does a great job of conveying this Doctor's general meloncholy. There is an absolute deluge of romantic 9/Rose fic out there at the moment and most of it pastes the romance and/or sex on, yay, a bit too heavily for the characterizations of these two that we have actually been shown, but this fic gets it just right, with everything bubbling just below the surface, coming out only as much as it needs to.

I know crossover day isn't until tomorrow, but chances of me getting to a computer tomorrow are slim to none.

Title: Two Doctors, Take Two
Pairing: none
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] tangentier
Author Website: Tangentier at the Teaspoon
Why this must be read:

It's only a drabble, so I hesitate to say anything about it, but it is brilliant. And I mean Brilliant.

Just remember that Doctors 2 and 6 along with their companions Jamie and Peri did, in fact, go defeat some evil together once.

07:10 pm Flying and Falling by andraste_oz (PG)
Fandom: LOST
Pairing: None
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] andraste_oz
Author Website: Brandy Hall
Why this must be read:

Another of my favorite subgenres of Lost fic is stories about the reaction back home to the disappearance of our castaways. It isn't anything we've seen on the show and aren't likely to see. [livejournal.com profile] andraste_oz's fic takes what we know about Charlie's brother, Liam, with whom he had a bitter falling out and a failed reconciliation prior to the plane crash, and imagines his guilt and sorrow to have lost Charlie. (Without dipping into "Pacecest" - as many authors like to slash the brothers.)

This fic beautifully conjures up the difficult relationship Liam has had with his "baby brother" and how he resented his talent, which only adds to his guilt now that he's gone. A lovely and lyrical story about loss.

09:11 pm And in the Darkness Bind You... by Greywolf the Wanderer (NC-17)
Fandom: STAR TREK: TOS
Pairing: Kirk / Spock
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author Website:Greywolf's Lair but it's password protected
Why this must be read:
Near the end of the memorable episode "Operation: Annihilate", Spock is left blind. Kirk has lost his only brother. Though we see at the end of the episode that all has returned mostly to normal, Greywolf the Wanderer explores what else might have happened during that episode. This story considers how Spock would react to losing his sight, and is a surprisingly emotional portrayal that nevertheless rings true. A classic of the hurt/comfort genre, Spock realizes that when all might seem lost, sometimes things can be found in darkness as well.

10:25 pm Kaffee and Conversation, by Arsenic Jade (PG)
Fandom: HIGHLANDER
Pairing: none (might lead to slash, might not, per the author)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] arsenicjade
Author Website: Every Rose Has A Thorn
Why this must be read: When "Timeless" ended, Claudia Jardine was a genius with a piano and a deliberate incompetent with a sword. "Desperately trying to die," Joe Dawson summed her up, because the threat of dying powered her music, and Claudia thought that was more than worth the risk. Kaffee and Conversation is a story about what Claudia might have become if she survived the Game, and it's fascinating to see the way Arsenic Jade has tempered Claudia without dulling her, let her mature without changing beyond recognition... and sent Claudia, who was supposed to be her killer's muse, looking for a muse of her own.

Written for one of the lyric wheels, it's a little short for me to pull a snippet for you, but well worth the time to read. Hope you enjoy!
