Salacious TextsThis is the last of three stories that focus either on a relationship other than Clark/Lex or that are told from another character's POV.
Why this must be read: How about because it's simply amazing? *g*
Seriously, this story is just
that good. It was written for the Remix challenge, based on the story
Better Than Creamed Corn by Beth S. The whole remix thing has always seemed impossible to me, but
velvetglove shows that she's more than up for the challenge.
Huitlacoche (Corn Smut) is told in the second person from the perspective of an original character who is a meteor mutant. It's an unusual choice, but it's very effective. It gives us an outsider's perspective on the story, shaking up our assumptions. At the same time, it puts us as readers into the narrative, making every detail incredibly immediate and intimate.
The narrator, like all Smallville's mutants, is inexplicably drawn to Clark. Her power involves causing people to blurt out their secrets, and she happens to arrive at the barn when Lex is visiting Clark, making for some interesting honesty. When she's caught, she's carted off to a secret LuthorCorp facility, and we see the inside of those dark experiments of Lionel's. Later, she's sent to the mansion as part of a special program, and what she witnesses there lays bare Clark and Lex's relationship (and I do mean that as voyeuristically as it sounds), Lionel's utter, creepy ruthlessness, and the dark parts of Lex that the narrator understands perhaps even better than Lex does himself.
Huitlacoche (Corn Smut) is beautifully written just as you would expect from
velvetglove. It's a powerful exploration of what it means to be a mutant, as well as
seriously hot. One of my favorite Smallville stories of all times.
