Why this must be read:
Spoilers: for Season 6, Episode 2: The Birnam Woods

This episode killed me a little bit. Leo has always been at the heart of the West Wing, whether we saw it or not, and well, I guess I feel like this is how the episode should have been shot. (Or maybe I just think that this is what happened and we didn't get to see it.) It's hard for me to explain this story actually. It's brilliant, and absolutely heartbreaking. Seriously, it gave me shivers.

Why this must be read:

This is such a departure for this pairing, which normally I avoid like the plague because of the built-in, near-nauseating levels of cuteness. But this is one of the creepiest Lost fics I've ever read, one guaranteed to give you goosebumps. Charlie has disappeared and Claire imagines what might have happened to him.

This is the last of three stories that focus either on a relationship other than Clark/Lex or that are told from another character's POV.

Why this must be read: How about because it's simply amazing? *g*

Seriously, this story is just that good. It was written for the Remix challenge, based on the story Better Than Creamed Corn by Beth S. The whole remix thing has always seemed impossible to me, but [livejournal.com profile] velvetglove shows that she's more than up for the challenge.

Huitlacoche (Corn Smut) is told in the second person from the perspective of an original character who is a meteor mutant. It's an unusual choice, but it's very effective. It gives us an outsider's perspective on the story, shaking up our assumptions. At the same time, it puts us as readers into the narrative, making every detail incredibly immediate and intimate.

The narrator, like all Smallville's mutants, is inexplicably drawn to Clark. Her power involves causing people to blurt out their secrets, and she happens to arrive at the barn when Lex is visiting Clark, making for some interesting honesty. When she's caught, she's carted off to a secret LuthorCorp facility, and we see the inside of those dark experiments of Lionel's. Later, she's sent to the mansion as part of a special program, and what she witnesses there lays bare Clark and Lex's relationship (and I do mean that as voyeuristically as it sounds), Lionel's utter, creepy ruthlessness, and the dark parts of Lex that the narrator understands perhaps even better than Lex does himself.

Huitlacoche (Corn Smut) is beautifully written just as you would expect from [livejournal.com profile] velvetglove. It's a powerful exploration of what it means to be a mutant, as well as seriously hot. One of my favorite Smallville stories of all times.

Why this must be read: Sometimes plot gets in the middle of my blowjobs.

It shouldn't have been a surprise, in retrospect, John thought, settling deeper into the hot water. From what they told him, Ancient was a precursor to Latin, but he'd pretty much put that out of his mind with the technology and the Wraith and other more pressing concerns to focus on. Besides, Atlantis bore a much stronger resemblance to the Chrysler building than the Parthenon. Wait, that was Greek. The lovely, steamy hot water cradling his sore muscles was also making him a little foggy. He knew the Coliseum was Roman, but that wasn't a good example; it was too deteriorated and entirely the wrong kind of structure to start with. Rodney would know if he were here. He knew everything. Except, probably, the reason John didn't want him to be here just now.

Fandom:QAF:US
Pairing:Brian/others, Brian/Justin
Author on LJ:Citizen Jess

Why this must be read:Even though it contains Brian/Justin elements, this is primarily a beautiful, detailed and absolutely believable meditation on Brian Kinney, from birth throughout the beginning of season four with religion as the thread woven through his life.
