10:54 am Bringing out the Dead by Miriam Heddy [R]
Fandom: Crossing Jordan
Pairing: Nigel/Bug
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] miriam_heddy
Author Website: Miriam Heddy’s Little Corner of the Universe

Why this must be read:

In the first couple of years of the show Bug was a bit closed off, and by “a bit” I mean “almost completely”. In the last couple of years of the show, they’ve loosened him up a bit, and while he’s still terribly socially inept in moments, he’s not as bad as he once was.

But sometimes, you want that old Bug back. And for that, you go to Miriam. Miriam Heddy’s been recced all over crack van because if you want true character voice and a good story, she can do it. And if you want smut. She can do it. And if you want early seasons Bug with his lack of people skills and his perma-scowl, and his deep, cuddly center, that almost no one ever saw, you go to Miriam. Because she gets him just right.

The story, at its core, has always struck me as a very realistic look at how Bug and Nigel might have ended up together back when they were less chummy and more utterly opposite.

Go. Read. Enjoy the emotional turmoil.

Fandom: FIREFLY

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] musesfool
Author Website: Achromatic
Why this must be read:

One of the things I like about CSI is that it's not about breaking the rules, or being wicked, it's usually about just holding on to the only thing you have left, in any way you can. Nor Ever Chaste brings that out beautifully.

01:19 pm Consenting Adults by Sigil (NC-17)
Fandom: X-MEN COMICVERSE
Pairing: Multiple Man/Multiple Man
Author Website: X-Men Slash Central
Why this must be read:

There was a fairly dark, moody period where Jamie, infected with the Legacy virus, lost control of his powers, one aspect of which was the dupes he created started developing their own personalities and couldn't be reabsorbed at will; a little like having multiple personality disorder of the flesh. Here, Sigil delves into that to show that sometimes being alone with yourself is very cold comfort.

Jamie smiled over the top of Jamie's damp head where he wouldn't be seen. He had every advantage, here, with silly Jamie assuming that, because he was the original, he was in control. Surely he should know better by now, especially with Jamie lying on the floor over there, holding his bloody nose. He rocked the relieved Jamie in his arms, assuming more and more control over their movements until he had Jamie sprawled pretty much face down on the bed. Then he grabbed Jamie's arm and twisted it up his back in one brutal movement.

Fandom: X-MEN COMICVERSE
Pairing: Multiple Man/Quicksilver
Author Website: X-Men Slash Central
Why this must be read:

And now, to cleanse the palate from the dark moodiness of the last rec, I give you a lovely piece of sillyfic.

"Come on, Pietro," urged Jamie Madrox, the Multiple Man, with a teasing smile, "You're falling behind again, buddy! I thought you were the fastest man alive! Five of me are still waiting for your attention!" Beside him five identical Jamie's licked their lips in anticipation.

This set of three recs highlights stories that explore the Lionel/Lex relationship in some way.

Why this must be read: Because it's just the funniest and most charming thing ever. In the story, Lex gets a puppy for Christmas from his father. Is that all there is to it? Well, no. Set in the days after Jitters, "Don't Cry" picks up where that famous scene of two families leaves off and shows us how much Lex would like to be at home among the Kents, at the same it's pretty much the most terrifying thing he can imagine.

Woven throughout the story is the tension in Lex's relationship with his father, as he struggles to figure out what this gift is supposed to teach him. In the process, he comes to realize some things about his past and makes some concessions that cost him surprisingly little.

Written in the early days of the fandom, this is a funny and touching portrait of the Lionel/Lex relationship that might have been.

04:02 pm The Thousandth Man by 'rith (PG-13)
Fandom: DC COMICS
Pairing: Roy Harper/Garth (aka Arsenal/Tempest)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] kerithwyn
Author Website: 'rith's Tiny Little Homepage
Why this must be read:

In my opinion, neither Arsenal nor Tempest gets nearly enough love, and this story very nicely remedies this ::grin::. This is neither a story about eternal love nor about one-night stands, but what happens when you go through life or death situations with a group of people nearly every day of your teenage years. This is a great introduction to these characters and the complex relationships between the original Teen Titans.

Head over to 'rith's webpage (the Nightwing and the Titans section) if you're interested in reading the two variations on a sequel to this fic.

05:12 pm Live Free or Die by JJ Taylor (PG-13)
Fandom: THE WEST WING
Pairing: Josh/Matt
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] jjtaylor
Author Website: none
Spoilers: for mid-season 6
Why this must be read:

I wanted to rec something from the newest season and Josh is still my favorite character so I wanted something that featured him. This story couldn't do more to fit the bill. It's set during the campaign, and it's beautifully detailed in all the right ways. The author gives voice to Josh incredibly well. And the story is about Josh coming to grips with the important things, and dealing with his decision to stand by Matt Santos during the frustrating parts of the campaign as well as the parts he knew he was signing up for.

05:58 pm VID REC: Highlander - Ability to Swing, by Luminosity
Vidder: Luminosity
Musical artist: Thomas Dolby
Pairing: none
Vidder on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] sockkpuppet
Vidder's website: Luminosity's Vidworks
Why this vid kicks ass: Because the vid as a whole is a sublime balance between the lyrics, the music, the clips and the subject (immortality). Because this is Duncan at his most charming, and most ruthless, and above all, most graceful. This is eye candy, if nothing else, but it's much more than that. In a fandom that lives and dies by swords, you really need the ability to swing.

Then, too, this vid is the perfect inspiration for writing Highlander, and the perfect reminder of why you watched the show to begin with, or wish you had. Thanks so much for making this, Lum, and for saying I could recommend it.

06:00 pm The Dreams You Dare to Dream by Linda3M (NC-17)
Fandom: Oz
Pairing: B/K
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] linda3m
Author Website: C5 Archive
Why this must be read: Because it's a wonderful look at a canon-based, AU possibility for Chris & Toby. It's romantic and angsty, with some h/c, and I love the way Linda catches them here, weaving a world that offers them some chances, where the reader can feel the love between them.

It's an oldie, yes, but still a goodie.

Why this must be read: This one is an AU all the way, and tells the story from the unexpected POV of Genevieve Beecher, as shown in this

select passage )

It's poignant and honest, and just a bit disturbingly voyeuristic as Genevieve watches her husband and the other man together. When it was first posted, it made me wonder what happened next, and it still does, and I'm glad to have finally rec'd it.

Vidder's website:
Why this vid kicks ass:

Because the vidder community has some unique ownership issues, it’s important that reccers be extra careful when making vid recs. Depending on the vidder’s preferences regarding public access to their work, please link your rec in the appropriate manner:

1. If the video is publicly accessible, direct link to the web page the vid is linked on, or if it’s the vidder’s request, to the HTML splash page of their site.

or...

2. Link to the site with instructions on acquiring the password, if the site is protected – do not reveal the password yourselves.

or...

3. Provide contact info for the vidder if their vids are only available privately (tapes, dvd-R’s, collections, etc.).

Do not:
Hotlink, i.e. link directly to the video file rather than the webpage.
Re-upload videos that a vidder has removed from the web.
Delay in removing a vid rec if requested to do so by the vidder.

Thank you!

09:03 pm The Tea Series by Telanu
Subject: The Tea Series by Telanu (NC 17)

Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing: Harry Potter/Severus Snape
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] somniesperus
Author Website: The Rag and Bones Shop

Why this must be read: When I first wanted to get into HP fandom, I went out to find some stories. I find the horrifying badfic you find at first, and I was almost ready to give up when a kind soul recommended The Tea Series.

I've never looked back.

This is forever the first story I rec, the story I turn to when I want to laugh, cry, get scared or turned on.

The characterisations are perfect (I adore that Snape is neither too nice nor too pretty), the writing is great, the sex is hot, and the plot sneaks up on you in a way that you will love. Trust me. I tend to confuse The Tea Series with canon. "Remember in book 4, when Snape said... oh wait, damn, that was the Tea Series."

You can read the parts on their own, but believe me - you won't want to. ;)

Telanu asks that links go to her entry page. I trust you to find your way through Fiction - Harry Potter - Tea.

09:35 pm The Death of the Six Week Rule by Valentin (NC-17)
Fandom: STARSKY AND HUTCH
Pairing: Starsky/Hutch
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] tovalentin
Author Website: Valentin's Stories
Why this must be read: This is an excellent piece of fiction. In short, it seems Hutch has taken to going down south to date men, but he's got a rule: Six weeks, and it's over. No strings, no broken hearts... which usually works out well. Starsky's fine with that, as long as Hutch doesn't share any of the details. It's all good... until temporary blindness puts Hutch in Starsky's care. Poor Hutch:

Hutch slouched in his seat. The mild burns around his eyes from the plant’s caustic sap were annoyingly itchy; only the bandages were keeping his hands off them. And what the hell was he going to do with himself at home? He couldn’t read, he couldn’t garden, he couldn’t cook, watch TV or even do his laundry. He was going to go crazy, he thought glumly. He’d end up spending the entire week jerking off and calling in to NPR talk shows. He imagined Starsky finding him on day seven, a gibbering, dehydrated wreck clutching his raw dick in one hand and the phone in the other, and the image surprised him into laughter.

You've gotta love Valentin's way with words.

Once the domestic pattern is established, it just gets better. Starsky feeds Hutch, takes care of Hutch. Then Starsky flirts, Hutch gets confused, but then he figures it out, and flirts back. Then Starsky... well, I wouldn't want to spoil it for you, so you've just gotta read it for yourself. It's just beautiful. Valentin writes with just the right touch of wistfulness and humor, and the combination is near perfect.

To paraphrase our luscious blond lovely, how can a guy with two functioning eyes have been so blind?
