08:51 am Sympathy For The Devil by Rabble Rouser (PG-13)
Fandom: STAR TREK TOS
Pairing: Spock/T'Pring, T'Pring/Stonn
Author on LJ: none
Author Website: Rabble Rouser's Rec Room
Why this must be read:

T'Pring is one of the most reviled characters in The Original Series, the woman who inexplicably rejected Spock and, in a cold-blooded and calculating fashion, set in motion a terrible series of events to achieve her own desires. Rabble Rouser shows us T'Pring's side of the story, and as the title of her story says, does indeed make us feel sympathetic, or at least more understanding, of her situation.

Why this must be read:

Man, I had a hard time choosing just one story of Bev's to rec. Her gen is great, her slash is great, and she can do angst like no one's business. Revolution finally won out because it's just. so. dark. If you feel like biting your nails down to the knuckle, read on.

There was something going on here, Jim realized; something that had happened, which he was only now getting to. Watching his partner intently, he queried, "Apart from shooting Tim Meredith, did the perp fire the gun at any other time?"

Blair's respiration was getting shallower, a ghastly pallor suffusing his face. "Yes," he blurted, clamping his mouth shut as soon as the word escaped. He didn't look at Jim.

Fandom: LOST
Pairing: Kate/Shannon, Charlie/Hurley, others implied

Why this must be read:

This made me laugh so much! It's Sawyer's POV, and he's as cynical, and as opportunistic in this as a jaded fangirl could desire. Sawyer's out to make himself a profit on the Island, and he doesn't want money - this time :) Although this ficlet has its tongue firmly in its cheek, it never loses the gritty sense of reality that flutters at the edges of Sawyer's cynicism, and I really liked that. Spoilers up to, umm, 'All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues' or thereabouts.

05:54 pm Four Lessons in Love by Caster (G)
Fandom: CSI: Crime Scene Investigation
Pairing: Nick Stokes/Greg Sanders
Author on LJ: N/A
Author Website: Archive of stories on What Makes The Desert Beautiful
Why this must be read:

It's a sweet tale of two Christmases in the relationship of Nick and Greg. They're having some personal problems, because Nick's family doesn't approve of his homosexuality, and around the holidays especially, he misses them. For some reason in CSI fic, there are a lot stories about family gatherings, probably because we know very little about the home lives of the CSIs (with the exception being Catherine), so it's funny to imagine. Greg's loud, ethnic, hippy, San Fransisco family is wonderful and endearing, and explains a lot about how Greg turned out. Nick's family, particularly his mother, are not monsters or gaybashing homophobes, they're straight-laced Texans who don't know how to adjust to their son's "alternative" lifestyle. They still love him, and that's what makes the angst so believable. You don't hate Nick's parents, you just don't agree with them.

Nick and Greg's nervousness about meeting the other person's family is adorable and very true to life, not over the top. I also love Greg's accidental conversation with Mrs. Stokes before the second Christmas, because it shows that Greg loves Nick and Mrs. Stokes loves Nick, and if nothing else, that's something they can agree on. And yes, it's only September, and not nearly time for Christmas recs, but give it a try anyway.
