12:36 am 'some things are like, duh you moron' by Silvia Kundera (PG-13)
Fandom: LOST
Pairing: Shannon/Sayid, Shannon/Boone
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] silviakundera
Author Website: LJ memories
Why this must be read:

Shannon's voice is so clear in this, and her thoughts sparkle with just the right amount of bitchiness, and selfishness, while still being incredibly human. These are the kinds of thoughts any girl cast away on an island with the likes of Boone and Sayid might feel :) On the other hand, it's also extremely touching, and somehow a little bit hot. Or maybe that's just me. Spoilers up to Deus Ex Machina, roughly.

03:45 am Scar Tissue by Keri T (PG)
Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH
Pairing: Starsky & Hutch (gen)
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author Website: Me and Thee Archive
Why this must be read:

Here in S&H, we like pain :) This MS from 'Vendetta', just after Hutch's hand is injured in the explosion, is one of the most vividly-depicted hurt scenes I've ever encountered. Occasionally the knocks the boys take onscreen seem repercussionless, but fics like these add a much-welcome tint of reality and bring even more agony to what we already see. Keri writes the treatment with such searing, brutal reality that the first time I read this piece, I ended up in tears from sympathetic pain alone. A natural extension to the scene we saw onscreen, this story fills in the gap between S&H huddled on the lawn and the somewhat more repaired team next seen in Dobey's office with lots of hurt and lots of comfort...and further extends it into the next week after Abby's gone.

02:55 pm Human Touch by Ralu (R)
Fandom: OZ
Pairing: Keller/Schillinger, Beecher/Keller
Author on LJ: N/A (but I'm seekng to remedy that!)
Author Website: Author Page at Unit B
Why this must be read:

This fic gives us a look into Keller's early experiences with Schillinger at Lardner (something which really hasn't been explored enough in fic, I feel), cleverly interspersed with present day moments with Beecher. It's an incredibly interesting look into the mind of Chris Keller (who will forever be one of the most fascinating characters on TV), and leaves the reader with so many different things to think about. There are scenes that are handled so deftly by the author that it's truly inspiring to read. Ralu is a fairly new writer to the Oz fandom, but she's already shaping up to be one of the greats. I know ten chapters seems like a lot, but they're actually fairly short chapters, so please give this a try - you won't be disappointed.

02:55 pm Archie's Three Things by LadyJaida
Fandom: HORNBLOWER
Pairing: Hornblower/Kennedy
Author on LJ:[livejournal.com profile] ladyjaida
Author Website: snoo.org, but it appears to be down
Why this must be read:

"Saved by the love of a good man" is one of the recurring tropes in fanfiction, as it is in fiction in general, and for good reason. "What does it do to a person to need to be saved, as well as loved?" is a less common, but to me more fascinating theme and Jaida lays it out beautifully, in a short, sparse piece that makes every word count.

Fandom: HORNBLOWER
Pairing: Hornblower/Kennedy
Rating: Explicit Sexuality
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] tanacawyr
Author Website: http://www.io.com/~cortese/stories/
Why this must be read:

Two boys growing to manhood, and learning about love. A war raging, danger threatening, and heartbreak coming up fast on the starboard bow; all these are the bones of Hornblower fandom, and over time they've been gnawed by a lot of teeth, but in [livejournal.com profile] tanacawyr's hands what might be cliche becomes instead inevitable, inexorable, and impossible to stop reading.

Sweet, hot, and heartbreaking, this is classic Horatio/Archie and at the same time as fresh as a newly-cut lime.

Fandom: POP SLASH
Pairing: Chris/JC
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] giddygeek
Author Website: The Geekdom
Why this must be read:

This story was written for this year's Don We Now Our Gay Apparel holiday challenge. I really love this story. It's wonderfully fun, Giddy Geek is really good with humor, and while I tend to be pretty partial to the Justin/JC pairing, there's something really cool about the JC/Chris pairing. Writers who can mesh their personalities and make it really work get my approval pretty quick. I don't want to go into too much detail about this because the story is so gripping and I'd hate to spoil it in any way, but the story involves like, the Burmuda Triangle of hurricanes or something. JC throws a hurricane party and time stops and Chris and JC have to deal with it. The concept is really fucking awesome.

08:01 pm This Time by Jewel3 (PG)
Fandom: X-Men (movieverse: X2)
Pairing: Wolverine/Rogue, Iceman/Rogue
Author on LJ: n/a
Author Website: n/a

Why This Must Be Read: This fic was one of those gems that I found buried in the trash that is fanfiction.net. I don't know how I found it, or where I got linked to it, but I'm insanely glad I was. This fic just describes the Wolverine/Rogue relationship different. It's also a completely new take on how Rogue feels about life - about both Wolverine and Bobby, about her relationship with both of them and how her life is going. All in all, a short but nicely done fic.

10:33 pm Pretty Life by Sabine (R)
Fandom: SPORTS NIGHT
Pairing: Casey/Dan
Author on LJ: [profile] fromthesabrary
Author Website: links to fic
Why this must be read:

This is an beautifully, beautifully written fic, and an example of what I love best about the SportsNight fandom. It starts off with the hilarious (Dan doing handstands, Casey tripping over ghosts while drunk, Sally being confused about Casey's non-existent dog). Then it moves on to the hot (sex against the wall). And by then you're sucked in—and bam, suddenly you're reading Casey afraid and reacting badly, and you want to just yell at him because how could he be so stupid? And then, just like the show, things work out, and it's okay. It's complex and wonderful and feels real.

11:24 pm Holding Ground by Heather (NC-17)
Fandom: X-Men (Movieverse....)
Pairing: pre-Wolverine/Rogue, pre-Scott/Kitty
Author on LJ: n/a
Author Website: profile on wrfa

Why this must be read: I'm fairly surprised to not see this up here yet. It's a post-MRA, post-Legacy fic and it's AU - but that doesn't stop it from being an amazing fic. It's well written. It takes characters that are generally at a certian point and age in their lives and moves them to a different one. They're still the same characters, underneath, and still the right characters. But they're in a new place, a different place, but they still manage to work in all the right subtext, and still manage to find a way for it to seem like it fits. If you think Jean and Scott need to be together always, this isn't the fic you want to read. And if you think that Logan and Marie have too big an age gap normally - you might want to just move on. But the fic is well worth it, if that doesn't bother you.

Most grown men wouldn't stand toe-to-toe with him, yet here she was, not only holding her ground, but staring at him defiantly )
