I'm Versaphile, and I'll be your tour guide this month for this small but deserving fandom. The Dead Zone is a TV series currently airing on the USA Network, adapted from the Stephen King novel. Spoilers inside have been kept to a minimum, but do touch on all four seasons to date. It's a slash-friendly series with inventive writing, complex characters, impending armageddon, and one doozy of a love triangle. Fandom: STARGATE ATLANTIS Pairing: Rodney McKay/John Sheppard Author on LJ: troyswannAuthor Website: Outside the Box Why this must be read:We started with a creepy, alien kind of story so it seems only fitting to end with one. I loved this from the first time I read it. There's just something about the shivers that crawl up my spine from the visceral horror that Salieri creates with her words that gets me. Set after the first season episode 38 Minutes it uses fear of the unknown to great effect as the team -- and the reader -- try and work out what is happening to Sheppard in the room that Atlantis has locked down for safety. Boom! Pow! Bang! Welcome to the wild world of Once Upon a Time in Mexico fandom. This colorful, shallow, campy shoot-'em-up movie inspires angsty slash, frequently including bullet wounds and insanity. If sociopathic hurt/comfort is your kink, welcome home. OUaTiM fandom includes two previous movies, El Mariachi and Desperado, as backstory, but, to my knowledge, those movies do not have their own independent fandoms, and knowing their storylines is not critical to being able to enjoy OUaTiM fic. Only in this third movie is Antonio Banderas (El Mariachi) joined by Johnny Depp (CIA Agent Sheldon Jeffrey Sands). A lot of what makes OUaTiM fandom-worthy is the two pretty men with guns and the rest of what makes OUaTiM fandom-worthy is the beautiful Johnny Depp playing a character both crazy and vulnerable. I've traded in Lex's Ferrari convertible for a Ford Capri and two very good-looking men in tight, tight pants. I'm still relatively new to The Pros fandom, so you'll get a look at how a newbie sorts out what she likes. Grab a pint and come along for the ride! Fandom: THE PROFESSIONALS Pairing: Bodie/Doyle Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: her stories can be found at The Hatstand Slash ArchiveWhy this must be read: Places like crack_van are where I often start my search when entering a new fandom. When I find an author I like, I check to see what else he or she has written. This is how I came across Elspeth's work, and I really like what I've read so far. The Fire Series is two stories that feature an older Bodie and Doyle - something that almost stopped me from reading. I wanted them young and vital, right? But the characterization is so right, and the relationship between them is sweet without being sappy. The stories alternate between present events as Bodie and Doyle continue to work at CI5 - no longer field agents, but co-controllers - and cases they dealt with in the past. The two streams come together brilliantly and the stories give you insight into the boys when they were young and dangerous counter-balanced with men that are more comfortable with themselves and each other. There's angst and action and lots of plot, tender moments and good banter. Both stories are long and well-worth the read. Hello, I'm lillyjk and I'll be driving the Lost crack_van this month. That means I'm going to be reccing a lot of slash, and a lot of different slash pairings along with the occasional humor fic. To kick things off, here's one of my favorite slash stories featuring one of my favorite pairings: Fandom: LOST Pairing: Sawyer/Sayid Author on LJ: jaye_voyeAuthor's Website: Other than livejournal, unknown Why this must be read: This is one of the first Sawyer/Sayid stories I read, and it really stuck with me. It's set mid-season 1 and incorporates just the right amount or angst along with snark and hot sex. The author takes Sawyer beyond the one-note character that appears in so many fics. Yes, we know he's a con man, but we also know that there's more to him than a dimpled smile and a bad attitude. I find her portrayal of Sayid particularly stunning because she delves into the guilt over his time as a Republican Guard, and the struggle he has with the man he once was and the man he's trying to be. Oh, and the sex is really really hot! ( Excerpt )Reparation jaye_voy also wrote a sequel to this piece Consideration

Eep. Sorry, I got a bit lazy with these recs - but I'm continuing on for October, so here we go! :) Fandom: OZ Pairing: Beecher/Keller Author on LJ: lisaluvsblairAuthor Website: Author page at Unit BWhy this must be read:I only found this fic after digging through the TSXF mailing list archive, and when I did I felt like I'd stumbled upon buried gold - which is why I begged Lisa to archive it at Unit B. This fic contains Chris Keller at his absolute best - he's angry, he's mean, he's frightening, but at the same time he's vulnerable, scared, and achingly in love with Toby. The intensity of Keller throughout this entire fic never lets up as he swings between making you afraid of him and making you want to hold him tight. It's his vulnerability and utter fear of Toby's rejection that cuts you to the quick in this fic. There are some beautiful moments of h/c and a truly hot-yet-angsty smut scene which is the icing on the cake. I adore this fic, it's one of the best out there. Force of Nature
