Well, sometimes the title of a fic catches my interest for various reasons, and this one mentioned bats, so I figured I'd read it. *g* And I was glad I did. From the declaration of the first line--"Bodie was blind"--the story grabs hold and doesn't let go. Injured by a bomb blast, Bodie has to deal with the possibility of never being able to see again, and Doyle has to deal right along with him. They battle through not knowing what to say to one another, feeling helpless (both of them), and trying to pretend everything is just the same as it always was. They take comfort in physical contact--something that's required for Bodie to cope, but for Doyle it also means the fulfillment of a long-held wish to be closer to his partner. But he doesn't want to take advantage of the situation either. You'll have to read the story to see how they resolve the issue. Fandom: ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO Pairing: None Author on LJ: vanillafluffyAuthor Website: fanfiction.net profileWhy this must be read:This story has the most realistic portrayal I've read of Sands dealing medically (and painfully) with his own wounds. It's all from his POV, so we get a lovely glimpse into our beautiful psychotic's twisted mind. Vanillafluffy's writing is always fresh and creative, and I'll be reccing others of her stories. It's almost a fandom cliche, now, to start OUaTiM stories from the end of the movie where the wounded Sands is propped against a wall in the streets of Culiacan. I did it myself, in a story, though it wasn't necessary, just as a nod to the convention. It's rare though that an author can believably pull off Sands caring for himself, considering what bad shape the movie left him in. In Darkness Bound, Sands gets a little help from the kid, but most of his medical problems, including pain and infection, he deals with alone. Then, Vanillafluffy introduces RC, a mysterious colleague of Sands's, who helps him get revenge on the remains of the Barillo cartel, and offers him an independent position outside the CIA. Fandom: SPORTS NIGHT Pairing: None Author on LJ: candle_beckAuthor Website: None that I'm aware of - archived at fanfiction.netWhy this must be read: Dan Rydell was revealed to us very slowly on the show, one small piece at a time. We learned that he wasn't as happy-go-lucky as he pretended to be, and that a lot of his wisecracks were covering a lot of pain. It always seemed to me like the show was cancelled when we still had so much to learn. This fic is a lovely piece of Dan backstory. It delves into the way his family life might have been, and touches on Sam's death with a gentle style, and narrative that's just spot-on. Oranges and Cigarettes | | |

This is a light and fun AU in which Kal-El and his parents all escaped Krypton and are living in the arctic together. Kal-El takes a fancy for a certain human, one Lex Luthor, and hilarity ensues. There's a lot of time spent on exploring how and why the two mutant groups disagree on methods and goals, and the reader is left feeling sympathy for both sides (admittedly to differing degrees). This novel-length story has both explicit m/m and m/f sex in a few chapters, but the overall tone is more action-drama than romance. (Part of me wants to characterize this as gen, depending whether the definition of gen permits sex.) I like the cuteness of Hank trying to figure out what Bobby really needs while Bobby just goes after what he wants--and the reactions of Jean and Scott to the relationship just make the story better. This one is on the porny side, but there's also great character stuff, so Hank, Bobby, Scott, and Jean fans will be happy. Handbasket Series | | |
