Fandom: DUE SOUTH
Pairings: Fraser/Kowalski, Kowalski/Vecchio, Fraser/Kowalski/Vecchio.
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] china_shop
Author Website: china_shop: fic index

Why this must be read:
A post-CotW story about a love triangle, it's hot and angsty and sweet and manly. RayK is believably non-reflective, doing his thing and not quite getting why RayV and Fraser have any problems with the situation. But I particularly like the Ray Vecchio in this story, so grounded and dependable. Fraser's reactions are in character, especially at the end.

Give this one a try, even if Ray/Ray stories aren't your thing.

11:26 am The Good Wife by Julie Fortune (G)
Fandom: STARGATE SG-1
Pairing: none
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] juliefortune
Author Website: here
Why this must be read:

As I think I've established previously, I suck at this part. Suck, suck, suck. But you should read it because, er, I liked it. It's teamfic, very much the team that's on the show (the original team, I mean). Our intrepid heroes go through the gate and see something they don't like, and try to fix it. Even though they know better. Chaos results. Jack scowls at people, Sam does her job, Daniel gets hurt (whee), and Teal'c has all their sixes.

Daniel cast a warning glance toward the gaoler. "Um, might want to try to be a little less patronizing unless you want the cell next door. They do take their faith seriously here."

Jack let that one slide. He tossed the dog tags again, caught them with a dry metallic chink, and stepped closer to the bars.

"Back in two days," he said. "We'll keep an eye on you." His dark eyes flicked up at the narrow window. Daniel nodded. "Don't make any friends you don't have to."

The Good Wife

hey, I'm d, and I'll be your SG-1 crack dealer for the month of October. I like to think I have varied tastes. I like Sam with Daniel, Jack with Daniel, Vala with Daniel, Cameron with Daniel, Daniel, Daniel, Daniel, Daniel...okay, yes, I'm one of those. Sorry. But it'll be fun. Promise.

01:45 pm The Matchmaker by Rimau (R)
Hi, I'm Melannen, and I'm your HL dealer for this month. You'll know me by the icon. Highlander is a fandom that is currently very quiet, and with over 150 recs already in the memories, it's not been easy to find good fresh stories. But this month, I'm going to do my best to rec only authors who have never been on the HL crack_van before. We're going to end up with a great pile of hidden gems, I hope.

Fandom: HIGHLANDER
Pairing:  Duncan/Methos
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] sua_lay
Author Website: Rimau's Slash Archive
Why this must be read:

I was shocked that nobody had gotten to this one yet! Connor MacLeod comes to Seacouver to visit his cousin. Unfortunately, Duncan's gone missing -- and what's up with this mouthy kid Adam Pierson, and just who does he think he is?

It turns out that Duncan's been kidnapped and the two of them set off to rescue him, with Joe running interference, in a story that could have been an episode on the show. You can take *that* as a compliment, or not: but it becomes a framework for some lovely character interaction, lots of pretty men playing with swords, and Connor's sense of humor run amuck. Yes, Duncan and Methos are madly in love with each other and too dense to realise it (everybody knows *that*!) but the real joy here isn't the slash -- it's the slowly building friendship between Connor and Methos, as they gleefully manipulate each other up one side and down the other.

There's a longer sequel/prequel/companion, too, written from Methos's point of view: The Hunt. It gets a bit tedious sometimes in the areas of overlap, but it's worth it for the look inside Methos's twisty brain. And the NC-17 sex, yes, I suppose.

02:02 pm This Darkness Inside, by michellek (Rating: R)
Fandom: BUFFY
Pairing: Buffy/Cordelia (Buffy/Faith)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] michellek
Author Website: unknown

Why this must be read:

Second person is very difficult to write effectively. It can come off as pretentious, pseudo-literary, and just plain annoying. So, when someone does it well, I applaud them, and then I rec them like gangbusters.

Written for [livejournal.com profile] femslash04, "This Darkness Inside" succeeds with the second-person viewpoint because it takes a common theme in Buffyverse femslash--the idea that Buffy and Faith aren't that different after all--and combines it with very effective use of punctuation. (No, really. Trust me. The parentheses are key.) It's a short piece, and it's not really about Buffy's seduction of Cordelia, or even Faith's seduction of Buffy; it's about power. And nothing's hotter than power struggles, especially when that struggle is internal. And that is what [livejournal.com profile] michellek's use of the second person does best of all.

04:00 pm Hound Voice, by glasgow_blue [G]
Fandom: LOTRIPS
Pairing: Gen: Orlando.
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] glasgow_blue
Author Website: n/a
Why this must be read:

I love gen; I admit this freely. This is from the Sidi [Orlando's dog] point-of-view, and it's lovely; not-quite-human, but the emotions still come through clearly and echoingly. It's a piece that could, so easily, go wrong, that getting it right deserves notice.

Hound Voice

Deserves notice, yes. Deserves feedback, certainly.

Why this must be read:

Well, this "Sleepers" extended version, kind of AU from certain point, was the one that hook me up in the fandom. One of the creepiest and sexiest histories I've ever read. What are you waiting for?

04:45 pm Coals of Fire by Jat Sapphire (NC-17)
Fandom: STAR TREK
Pairing: Kirk/Spock, Kirk/OFC
Author on LJ: ?
Author Website: http://www.geocities.com/jat_sapphire/
Why this must be read:
Because it is so incredibly hot and so beautiful. It's a sequel to Still Amok, the classic Pon Farr story, where Kirk had to "help" Spock. This has, understandably left them in an incredibly awkward place, neither of them sure how exactly to act around each other. Before they have a chance to properly fix it, they're wisked away on a diplomatic mission which then goes rather horribly awry. It should be a recipe for clichés and h/c but somehow it manages to be more than that. In addition, it has a great plot that will drag you in and keep you reading.

10:30 pm Covenant by Alexa C. (R)
Fandom: OZ
Pairing: Beecher/Keller
Author on LJ: ??
Author Website: ??
Why this must be read:

I can't believe this hasn't been recc'd before. It's an amazing alternate take on Season 3, originally posted before the real Season 3 aired. The emotions in this fic are incredible, with Toby struggling so hard to deny the fact that he still wants Keller even after he betrayed him, and Keller continually screwing up his attempts at winning Toby back. There's some great angsty smut in here, as well as issues related to Keller being a cutter. A lovely piece of classic angst from the old days of the fandom.

11:16 pm Palmer's Notation by Elismor (PG)
Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA 2003
Pairing: none
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] elismor

Why this must be read:

BSG is a great fandom for secondary characters and I love that the show and the fanfic writers aren't afraid to play with them. I've had a soft spot for Cally since I first saw the mini-series, and my love has only grown as we've learned more about her. Here, [livejournal.com profile] elismor takes a fleeting revelation about Cally from Episode 2.3 and spins it into a short, revelatory character study. One that is only more powerful when read with the knowledge of what comes to pass in subsequent episodes.
