Fandom: THE DEAD ZONE Pairing: Johnny Smith/Walt Bannerman Author on LJ: cesperanzaAuthor Website: Speranza's FictionWhy this must be read: This is quite possibly the quintessential Dead Zone fic; certainly when I started looking for stories in the fandom it was first on everyone's list. The Big Picture is ambitious, tackling both the difficulties and intimacies of the Johnny/Walt/Sarah relationship, and the legal and moral challenges the visions can create. The story begins at the resolution of a crisis, and then exists between the lines of several more as the fabric of the Bannerman-Smith family unravels. It is only the most intimate of dangers that can weave them back together. ( Excerpt ) The Big Picture

Fandom: THE DEAD ZONE Pairing: Johnny Smith/Sarah Bannerman, Sarah Bannerman/Walt Bannerman Author on LJ: astolatAuthor Website: IntimationsWhy this must be read: An honest examination of the show's love triangle, from Walt's perspective. One of the most refreshing things about the show is its mature handling of relationships, and the fic keeps well to this strength. ( Excerpt ) Opening Doors

Fandom: THE DEAD ZONE Pairing: Johnny Smith/Bruce Lewis Author on LJ: lisewAuthor Website: Fic by LiseWhy this must be read: The episode "Zion" centers around Bruce's father's funeral. His father was a pastor, who trained his son to follow in his footsteps. Bruce rejected this role, but by the end of the episode sees Johnny as a modern prophet, and that Bruce's place is by his side. Prophet is Johnny's perspective on the visit to Bruce's home town, and the weight of the future on his shoulders. While knowledge of the episode makes the fic richer, it stands well on its own as a study of a man who, for all his supernatural guidance, is the most lost of all. ( Excerpt ) Prophet

Fandom: ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO Pairing: none Author on LJ: melodywildeAuthor Website:fanfiction.net profileWhy this must be read: It's a well-written, satisfying post-movie fic, with some grand Sands torture. *eg* El Mariachi hears of an attempt on El Presidente's life, and reasonably enough, assumes Sands must have been involved. He goes looking for the man, knowing nothing of what became of him after the coup. All is not as it seems, and El inadvertently leads some old enemies to Sands's location. Then, as the CIA agent is tortured, El has to decide if he cares enough to mount a rescue. Very angsty, and Sands is wonderfully in character with the snark. The story goes on to show Sands how there can be people in the world who care for him. Aw. ( excerpt )OUaTiM OverviewSurvivors

Fandom: DUE SOUTH Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski Author on LJ: runpunkrunAuthor Website: The UndergroundWhy this must be read:Punk's RayK voice is dead on, and this short gem of a story is full of lines that make me laugh or want to smile as fondly as Fraser at Ray, such as "This reminds me of the summer I spent in the Aulavik Bird Sanctuary," Fraser says, and soon there's bird rustling and MK3A2 offensive hand grenades and a guy with one leg and Ray pulls his hat down even further. Fraser seems to think his stories have happy endings, but that's Fraser for you. It's a happy ending if you aren't dead at the end. Ray needs a little more happy than that.
"Hey," he interrupts, "I don't like where this is going. You got any stories without murder or mayhem or gimpy Inuits?" Also, in this story, Fraser gets his poetry geek on while Ray struggles to make sense of it. *loves* Verse Chorus Verse

Fandom: FIREFLY Pairing: River/Jayne Author on LJ: inlovewithnightAuthor Website: Exaggeration and Blank VerseWhy this must be read:This fic emphasizes the "morbid and creepifying" aspects of the Firefly verse in a story where River and Jayne are left alone after the death of the rest of the crew. The gut-wrenching narrative description packs a real punch. I hope never to see this Jayne and River on the show, yet the characterization is frightfully spot-on with a River whose craziness is too, too sane and a Jayne brought to despair. The Living

Fandom: HARRY POTTER Pairing: Pansy, implied Pansy/Draco and Pansy/Luna Author on LJ: maleficsAuthor Website: Imperatrix, Strategissa (doesn't have anything to do with her fics but the only site I could find for her) Why this must be read:Usually I'm not one for femmeslash, just not my cup of tea but I simply adored this story. The femmeslash is only at the end it's mostly a character development for Pansy. It deals with gender dysphoria in a very real and lovely way. I adore Pansy and this story delves into her mind in a great way. What does a girl do when she's queer but purebloods simply don't approve of it? Does she listen to what high society has drilled into her or does she go with who she is inside? Mad

Oliver knows Marcus wants him as does the rest of the school but does Marcus get him? Read to find out. In Love

Fandom: HARRY POTTER Pairing: Percy/Oliver, Percy/Marcus(unrequited) Author on LJ: macteagueAuthor Website: BreagereyWhy this must be read:Warnings: Includes sexual harassment Marcus wants Percy and is willing to do anything to get him. As a campaign of sexual harassment comes into play Oliver finds out what is going on. Oliver steps in to protect Percy but why does he do it in truth because Percy is his friend or because he wants Percy to be more than his friend? Willful Blindness

Fandom: STARGATE SG-1 Pairing: Jack/Daniel Author on LJ: tripoli8Author Website: sign of the timesWhy this must be read:One of my favourite things about the Jack and Daniel pairing - besides the fact that Daniel is in it, okay - is the pain. These characters have been through a lot of things that sucked hard, and the idea that they can find love with each other, with anyone, underneath all that destruction and sadness, is just very pretty. And that's what I like to think that this story is about. Upstairs, Daniel's still out in the hallway when he gets back. He's futzing with his tie, or pretending to, but he looks Jack up and down in that sad, careful way that they can't afford at the negotiating table.
"You look terrible," he says, not unkindly. "You should go home." The episode referenced mainly is this one. Carmel
