Fandom: THE DEAD ZONE Pairing: None Author on LJ: ladyvyolaAuthor Website: Petals & PixelsWhy this must be read: Johnny lost six years to his coma, but with each vision he gains the borrowed experiences of months, years, lifetimes. Yet, lying in wait for him is one vision that only takes. Tick is about the moment of revelation--the change that comes upon you when you realize the end of the world is coming, and soon. Fandom: THE DEAD ZONE Pairing: None Author on LJ: sagenessAuthor Website: Nearly HomeWhy this must be read: A chilling portrait of a worst-case scenario: the end comes, and all Johnny and Bruce can do is keep walking and stay alive. Even in the bleakest future, there's hope at the end of the longest of roads. ( Excerpt ) Long Lay The World

Fandom: THE DEAD ZONE Pairing: None Author on LJ: dsudisAuthor Website: Words Words WordsWhy this must be read: When you're trying to save the world, you have to be careful you don't end up being the cause of its destruction. In the episode "Finding Rachel," Johnny shares with Bruce his fear that he may be instrumental in the very apocalypse he's trying to avert. But that kind of knowledge weighs heavy on Bruce, and in this story he shares it with the only person he can: Walt. Because Bruce isn't sure that he can do what Johnny needs him to do... Fandom: THE DEAD ZONE Pairing: Johnny Smith/Rebecca Carlson (referenced--mainly gen) Author on LJ: rivkatAuthor Website: http://www.rivkat.com/Why this must be read: In the present, the future comes to Johnny in short, puzzling fragments. In the future, the only thing Christopher Wey wants is another piece of the past. Afraid of Americans is told in sharp flashes, moving back and forth in time the same way both vision-bound men do. The future can change, but at what cost? ( Excerpt ) Afraid of Americans

Fandom: THE DEAD ZONE Pairing: Johnny Smith/Walt Bannerman/Christopher Wey Author on LJ: astolatAuthor Website: IntimationsWhy this must be read: A silver cane-head connects Christopher Wey's bleak future existence with Johnny's relatively idyllic present. When they touch the object, present and future come together--and Johnny can't seem to bring himself to break the connection, trapping both men in shared half-lives. It's only when Walt is a little too observant that a little warmth is found. ( Excerpt ) In The Bleak Midwinter

Fandom: LOTRIPS Pairing: Orlando Bloom/Viggo Mortensen Author on LJ: vogirl78Author Website: n/a Why this must be read:You must have noticed by now that 'voice' is very important to me, and the thing that struck me about this story was -- surprise! -- voice. There are maybe five fics I've ever read, in more fandoms than I care to admit, that were in well-written first person. This is one of them. Vo has Orlando dead on rights. She has everyone. Reading this is really like listening to Orlando talk: the Orlando that lives in my head, the Orlando I want him to be, the Orlando I hope he is. And the conceit of the prologue is delightful, which just makes the whole story one I keep coming back to -- it has an unseen pull of its own. Unseen Pull of the Moon

Fandom: ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO Pairing: none Author on LJ: hippedivaAuthor Website:Crow-Witch's CroftWhy this must be read: And from Hippediva a powerful Day of the Dead tale suitable for Hallowe'en season. In fact, read her notes at the end for why Oct. 27 is the perfect day for this rec. *g* El finds Sands and the kid where circumstances have forced them to stay. Fandom: Farscape Pairing: John/Aeryn, yes, but this is mostly about Aeryn Author on LJ: birgitmAuthor website: Birgits VidsWhy this must be read:Although I’ve downloaded (and kept in my permanent collection!) several of Birgit’s Farscape videos, this is the first fic of hers that I’ve read and, in fact, is her first Farscape fic. But, I thought if she did for fic half as well as she did for videos… She does. This story is a painful look into Aeryn Sun and a difficult decision, perhaps the most difficult of her life, as well as a milestone in her journey to be more. The setting is during the time between Dog With Two Bones and Promises and she caught me with the very first paragraph: Aeryn fingered the chit absently in her hands as she stood outside the clinic. The street was dirty, an unkempt, unpaved alley deep within the recesses of an unpleasant part of a town whose name she couldn’t remember, on a planet she knew she wouldn’t want to remember. There was nothing good here.Go. Read. And, as always, if you’re so moved, leave the author a little feedback. :) The Kick Inside

Attn. Drivers: Tomorrow is the last Friday of the month, which means it's time for Friday Night Drive-In, a.k.a. Fan Vid Recs. Reccers may post 1 vid rec for their fandom, formatted as follows:
Subject Line: VID REC: Fandom - Song Title
Vidder: Musical artist: Pairing: Vidder on LJ: Vidder's website: Why this vid kicks ass:
Because the vidder community has some unique ownership issues, it’s important that reccers be extra careful when making vid recs. Depending on the vidder’s preferences regarding public access to their work, please link your rec in the appropriate manner:
1. If the video is publicly accessible, direct link to the web page the vid is linked on, or if it’s the vidder’s request, to the HTML splash page of their site.
or…
2. Link to the site with instructions on acquiring the password, if the site is protected – do not reveal the password yourselves.
or…
3. Provide contact info for the vidder if their vids are only available privately (tapes, dvd-R’s, collections, etc.).
Do not: Hotlink, i.e. link directly to the video file rather than the webpage. Re-upload videos that a vidder has removed from the web. Delay in removing a vid rec if requested to do so by the vidder.
Thank you! | | |

Michael, Ben and Hunter spend the day at the loft. This is a fun and lighthearted fic, yeah, but it also gives the reader a look into who Brian is and how he views life. ( Brian was going soft in his old age )

Fandom: OZ Pairing: Beecher/Keller Author on LJ: blackchapsAuthor Website: Slash Fanfiction by JustBlackChapsWhy this must be read:Because it's some brand spankin' new Oz fic, that only just got completed, and just in time for me to rec it! Fabulous AU in which Keller is a guard at Oz, rather than an inmate, fucking around with an imprisoned Beecher. This fic is so well-written and fabulous, and the characterisation is perfect. There's a good plot, hot smut, and some truly emotionally intense moments between Beecher and Keller. I don't want to give any more away, because it's so great, you simply must read it. Seriously, please read it, it's such an intriguing concept and a wonderfully told story. Plus blackchaps is incredibly self-deprecating and deluded enough to think her stuff is no good - we must convince her otherwise! :o) Chapter 1Chapter 2Chapter 3Chapter 4Chapter 5Chapter 6Chapter 7Chapter 8Chapter 9Chapter 10Chapter 11Chapter 12 (1/2)Chapter 12 (2/2)

Sorry for the long rec-less space, my various vacations this month took over my life for a bit. I'm going to make up for it tonight with three recs in a row, which I wouldn't normally do. These three stories all have something in common and it's something that would normally scare people away; they're all about OCs. But I encourage you to give them all a chance, BSG is a great universe to play in and these authors have all done so brilliantly. Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA 2003 Pairing: none Author on lj: isis_ufAuthor Website: DaydreamsWhy this must be read:What do you do when you discover you're world is under attack? If you're President Adar, you discover quickly and terribly exactly how little even the leader of the colonies can do. isis_uf takes a character mentioned but never seen in canon and brings him grandly to life. In a few brief lines she sketches a character who is believable, flawed and altogether human; a leader discovering how tenuous that leadership is, a powerful man discovering how impotent that power can be. Both my next two stories come from the brilliant Common People Challenge. There are a lot of great stories archived there but these are two of my favorites. Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA 2003 Pairing: none Author on lj: rheanna27Author Website: Golden MazeWhy this must be read: rheanna27 presents the story of the cylon invasion from the point of view of the crew of the Calliope, a family-run cargo-ship and the smallest member of the Rag Tag Fleet. The Calliope is a family-run ship in the strictest sense. Her crew consists only of the captain, Max, his wife Helen and their two children. From the safety of this small microcosm we witness the destruction of civilization and the gathering together of the remnants into something new. Max and Helen are incredibly alive. I almost feel like I'd recognize them if I met them on the street, their concerns, their love, their wondering about what might have been, all are deftly portrayed. Lee Adama gets a cameo towards the end of the story, and he's excellently drawn as well, but the story ultimately belongs to the Calliope and her crew and to all the little families out there in the fleet struggling to survive in a dangerous new world. Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA 2003 Pairing: none Author on lj: myalchodAuthor Website: DreamwovenWhy this must be read:Another pov of the cylon attack, this from a young priestess aboard the passenger liner Tyche's Blessing in the midst of a pilgramage to each of the 12 colonies. It is a simple story, in 6 linked vignettes, of the loss and rebirth of faith, of the descent into darkness and the promise of spring. Ellie is a believable and sympathetic viewpoint character and myalchod has done a nice job of anchoring her experiences to the familiar events of the series occuring elsewhere in the fleet. What really makes this story though is the vision presented of the Colonies' religion. Mixing what little can be gleaned from the show with elements of Greek myth, myalchod makes the colonist's faith feel tangible and real, with prayers and rituals and beliefs deftly woven into the pattern of day to day life.
