Why this must be read:

Formatted as a series of fragments and scenes, Intra is a story told in borrowed time. Set entirely during the episode "33" it focuses not on the fights or the briefings or the jumps, but on those few precious minutes sandwiched in-between, when the exhausted pilots are finally able to pause and breathe and eat or shower or even snatch a few precious minutes of sleep or a desperate hand-job in the shower. Although her focus is on Lee and Kara's relationship -- past and present -- Kate Andrews also turns her keen eye on some of the other pilots and deck crew. Kate has a talent for spare, sharply-drawn characterizations, even those characters who only get one or two lines feel fully realized. But her Lee and Kara are the heart of this story, she captures everything that makes them captivating without shying away from either's more infuriating traits all while deftly weaving a picture of their past, their present and even their tenuous future.

Why this must be read:

What is that moment when a relationship turns from a friendship to something else? Sometimes it's not a single moment or a single conversation, sometimes it isn't any words at all, just a series of minute changes and gradual shifts. In "Your Quaint Honour" [livejournal.com profile] voleuse charts the unspoken shift in Lee and Kara's relationship, a shift that begins with the ending of civilization. [livejournal.com profile] voleuse's strength is her prose. With stark, elegant sentences, she illuminates the unspoken, drawing out the meaning in a look, a touch, a slight shift in behaviour. She alternates segments of story with excerpts of verse (the poem To His Coy Mistress), a technique that is difficult to pull off. Here though, the juxtaposition is perfect, with the verse serving both to complement and to add richness to the narrative.

Why this must be read:

I once asked on [livejournal.com profile] medical_geeks for information on the realities of Sands's injuries and what the results would be in terms of pain and infection. I was so appalled to learn how bad Sands's first few days would be that I, like many other writers, recoiled away from writing that level of unpleasant realism.

Mari . . . doesn't.

This is the story of Sands's experience after being maimed and wounded on the Day of the Dead, and for the next two days. It's beautifully written. El Mariachi's characterization is more complex than I'd expect in a short piece and Sands's voice is perfect.

He can imagine El Mariachi smiling in the short silence that follows his words. It is not an unpleasant image. "Fortune enjoys making a joke of me." El's fingers whisper across the bandages that hide Sands's stigmata from the world and, goddamnit, he can feel the mariachi smirking. "As it would seem that she does with you, as well."

Why this must be read:

A wonderful re-envisioning of movieverse canon, as Aragorn thinks of all the ways he could have saved Boromir by loving him. The technique of reverse chronological order adds to the poignancy.

Together we ride to the White City, and the tower guard takes up the call, "The Lords of Gondor have returned!"

Why this must be read:
This is a story about RayV and RayK deciding that Fraser is lonely and that they have the perfect solution. There's a lot of emotion in this short story--besides their love for Fraser, I especially like the snarky affection between the Rays. My description isn't inspired, but I hope you'll read this one anyway, even if you aren't into F/K/V threesomes.
